10-11-20 | Dolphins v. 49ers -8 | 43-17 | Loss | -118 | 30 h 25 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Don't tell us it was 36 yrs ago when these 2 battled in Super Bowl XIX, when Montana & Co throttled Marino, & the "Marks Brothers" in Dan's only Super Bowl. Many call that Niner team one of the greatest ever. Second of 3 home games for San Francisco, which let one get away in the late going, allowing 2 TDs in final 4:08 of 25-20 loss to Philly. Have to see quick bounce back, with 26th-ranked Dolphin "O" doing little vs 49ers' 3rd-ranked "D". Miami has now allowed a sack in 30 straight games (longest in NFL), & Fitzpatrick has thrown for no less than 64 4th quarter interceptions since '08. Niners are 9-1 ATS as chalks vs AFC, & 7-1-1 vs the Dolphins. Only way to go |
10-11-20 | Raiders v. Chiefs -11 | 40-32 | Loss | -109 | 28 h 40 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Can anyone in the AFC West scare the Chiefs, just a little? If anyone can, it's down to the Raiders. KC is coming in off a delayed Game vs the Pats. Vs Baltimore on Monday 2 weeks ago: 34 points, 10-of-13 on 3rd down, 517 yards (385 passing yards & 132 rushing yards). And 5 more TDs for Mahomes with zero turnovers vs the Ravens. So Chiefs are now 3-0 for 4th consecutive season (longest streak in team history), & have won 9 straight games, while covering 11-of-12. And Chief "D" has held opposing QBs to passer rating under 100 in 9 straight games. Pity the Raiders |
10-11-20 | Panthers +1.5 v. Falcons | 23-16 | Win | 100 | 27 h 30 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Not the most glamorous of matchups, but sometimes these are the best games. No questioning rebirth of the Panthers last couple of weeks, behind Bridgewater, who was a sweet 26-of-37 for 276 yards, & 2 TDs vs up-&-coming Arizona. Check Carolina's 444-262 yard edge, as it scored TDs on 3 of its first 4 drives vs the Cards. That marked Panthers' 1st win over an NFC opponent since October 13, 2019 (9 straight losses). And it was also their first game this season without allowing a rushing TD. Falcons in off Monday Nighter at Green Bay |
10-11-20 | Cardinals -7 v. Jets | 30-10 | Win | 100 | 27 h 23 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units The "Todd Bowles Bowl", as he was DC of the Cards, & HC of the Jets for a time. Can the Jets win 3 games this year? Doubtful. First road chalk role for the Cards since 20-10 win over the Niners on Nov 5, 2017. Quick start, but allowing 28.5 points per game in current 2-game losing streak, with this the 2nd of 3 consecutive RGs. Faltered badly in 1st traveler, with 4 punts, a TD, & a fumble in their first 6 possessions at Carolina, winding up with a 444-262 yard deficit, despite decent Murray effort: 24-of-36 & 3 TDs and 0 interceptions, but just 133 yards. Jets stayed with Broncos, but note Darnold being sacked in 20th consecutive game (longest streak in NFL). Cards looking past nobody. |
10-10-20 | Temple -3 v. Navy | Top | 29-31 | Loss | -110 | 99 h 8 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit NCAAF Mismatch of the Week First game for the always dangerous Owls, who are on a spectacular 34-15 ATS run, including 3 straight vs the Middies. Navy is always a standard as a rushing "O" elite (#1 last year). Not this year, with 301-119, 265-204, & 369-90 rushing yard deficits. And note visitor is 22-13 ATS in Navy games |
10-10-20 | Kansas State +9 v. TCU | 21-14 | Win | 100 | 45 h 2 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Cats are something else, seeming to get stronger as their games wear on, as their back-to-back comeback wins over Oklahoma & Texas Tech attest. Try 31-5 & 14-0 windups with those upsets, for covers of 35 & 12 points, which continued to extend the success of the underdog in Kansas State games, with the pup now 10-2 ATS in last dozen 'Cat outings. As a matter of fact, the dog has won the last 7 Wildcat games Straight up! First chalk role for the Frogs, who are a paltry 4-14 as home favorites, and are only 14-13 SU past 2 years |
10-10-20 | Pittsburgh v. Boston College +6.5 | Top | 30-31 | Win | 100 | 97 h 4 m | Show |
Rating: 3 Unit CFB Play of the Day Third straight home game for Eagles, who still can't run (84, 87, 40 rushing yards), although Jurkovec in off 310-passing yard effort vs North Carolina. BC had tying 2-point try run back in L0:45. Solid dog play, & Pitt "D" allowed 29 first downs & 336 passing yards in L0:23 loss to NC State, offsetting Pickett's 411 passing yards. To wire |
10-10-20 | Virginia Tech +4.5 v. North Carolina | 45-56 | Loss | -110 | 41 h 59 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Hokies keep on doing it, despite health problems, taking Duke, despite being down to 21 players, & just 2 full-time coaches. Note 643 rushing yards L2 weeks. Herbert LW: 208 rushing yards (10.4 yards per rush). UNC #1 in rushing "D", with QB Howell, RB Carter smoking. Points the play. |
10-10-20 | Oklahoma v. Texas +2.5 | 53-45 | Loss | -109 | 41 h 56 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units For the 11th straight time, the Longhorns have been pegged as the dog in this classic "throw away the records" series, & they've paid off handsomely in that role, covering 7 of 8 since '13, with the only miss coming in the '18 conference title match. And this has been the case for the recent history, the Okies field one of the most potent offenses, only to be damaged by a highly porous defense, having dropped 2 straight games for the first time since 1999, & 2-10 ATS. Ehlinger (308 passing yards per game)does his thing in this |
10-10-20 | Florida -6.5 v. Texas A&M | Top | 38-41 | Loss | -110 | 93 h 11 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit SEC Game of the Week |
10-08-20 | Bucs -3 v. Bears | 19-20 | Loss | -130 | 1 h 26 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Potential playoff matchup? This is another big one with late season tie-breakers on the line. Even though Brady has had a ton of success in cold Foxboro in January, he'd like to avoid Soldier Field if possible. Three straight wins for the Bucs with Tom at 1,123 yards, & a TD catch in 5 straight games for Evans. The Bears at home this year: 17 & 11 points (0-2 ATS), & only 28 rushing yards in hosting loss to the Colts. Their first 10 possessions: 3 points & 7 punts, & they're the only team not to score a 3rd quarter TD this year. Tom last week: 369 passing yards & 5 touchdowns with 1 interception (oldest player with 2 straight 3+ TD games). Lay the points |
10-04-20 | Eagles +7.5 v. 49ers | 25-20 | Win | 100 | 53 h 45 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Third matchup this week that could have a major impact in the NFL playoff picture. Check Niner rout of hapless Giants, despite going it without their starting QB, RB, WR, TE, LB, CB, & 3 "D" linemen. No Jimmy, no problem, as Mullens threw for 323 yards (now has 275+ passing yards in 5 of his last 6 starts). And check San Francisco's first game without a punt since 1993. However, 49ers are 0-6 ATS off a pair of SU/ATS wins. Eagles being killed by the turnover: minus 7 for the season, with Wentz the first Philly QB with 2+ picks in 3 straight games since Ron Jaworski in '85 |
10-04-20 | Giants v. Rams -12.5 | 9-17 | Loss | -105 | 98 h 18 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Right, the road team has covered all 3 Giant contests, with their only spread success by a single point at Chicago. For the first time since 1983, NY has managed 16 points, or fewer, in each of their first 3 games of the season (QB Jones: multiple turnovers in all 3). And Check an NFL-worst 12-39 record since the start of the 2017 season. Quite a comeback for the Rams at Buffalo, turning a 28-3 deficit into a 32-28 lead, only to lose in L 0:15. Donald: 2 more sacks. Should overwhelm toothless Giants |
10-04-20 | Ravens -13 v. Washington Football Team | 31-17 | Win | 100 | 95 h 20 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Sure, there is an excellent chance that the Ravens will have been drained, off their Monday Night Classic War with the Chiefs. Possibly, but jumping off this machine is not in our repertoire, with their current 11-2 spread run, the vast majority of which came with some to spare. Now 7-0 ATS as road favorites of 6+ points. Jackson: 21-3 SU as a starter, & Ravens first team to rush for 200+ yards per game, & pass for 200+ yards per game in same season since 1950. Washington perfect foils, allowing 30+ points in 5 of their last 6 games, with Haskins coming in off 3 picks in loss to Browns, & may have lost Chase Young |
10-04-20 | Vikings v. Texans -3.5 | 31-23 | Loss | -108 | 66 h 0 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units A pair of unexpected winless teams here. Kirk Cousins on the road vs a quality team. No thank you. Texans have run the gauntlet of KC, Baltimore, & Pitt: thus 0-3 for 5th time in franchise history. Chance for redemption here, as Watson is the first Texan QB with 250+ passing yards in each of his first 3 games of the season, while Cousins has nine interceptions in his last 7 games (just 3 picks in his previous 13 outings). No, neither team is a defensive stalwart, but Watson can just make things happen |
10-03-20 | Oklahoma v. Iowa State +7 | Top | 30-37 | Win | 100 | 79 h 3 m | Show |
Rating: 3 Unit Big-12 Play of the Day Call reversal of LY's 42-14 Sooner win. Oklahoma in off shocking 38-35 loss to Kansas State, after leading 28-7 (24-0 windup), as Frosh QB Rattler tossed 3 key picks, thereby offsetting 387 passing yards (4 TDs). Sooners are now on a 2-9 ATS run by 126½ points. All that despite a 900-683 point edge in their last 22 lined games. Cyclones in off wrenching win over Tcu, despite a sweetly balanced 212 rushing yards & 213 passing yards, with steady Purdy 18-of-23, & 154 rushing yards from Hall (3 TDs & 8.6 yards per rush). All the trends are in favor of the Cyclones.. |
10-03-20 | Arkansas v. Mississippi State -17.5 | Top | 21-14 | Loss | -120 | 79 h 7 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit SEC Game of the Week Mike Leach is an offensive god. His acquisition was a stroke of genius by the Bulldogs, who came in at #111 in passing "O" last year. Not only that, but ex-Stanford QB Costello has just the right tools to take full advantage. A spectacular 623 passing yards & 5 TDs (31, 43, 75, 9, & 24 yards) set new SEC records. And against LSU, no less. Arkansas is now 2-22 SU of late, allowing 45 points per game over their last 8 outings. Note an unanswered 32 points to wind up their 37-10 loss to Georgia. Won't slow this train down a bit... |
10-03-20 | Texas A&M v. Alabama -17 | Top | 24-52 | Win | 100 | 75 h 11 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit NCAAF Mismatch of the Week Well, the 'Tide let us down in 38-19 win over Mizzou, allowing the backdoor cover, after taking a 35-3 lead in the 3rd. Thus a 15-3 deficit over the final 16:09. A closer peek shows 'Bama with just a 92-yard edge. However, QB Jones, who filled in ably for the injured Tagovailoa, was an effective 18-of-24 ( TD's with 0 picks). Aggies aren't the best of plays in this situation (1-14 ATS as an SEC dog), & enter off a sloppy win over Vandy (25½ point ATS loss), with only 2 TDs vs last year's 92nd-rated "D". 'Tide covers every other week. |
10-03-20 | South Florida v. Cincinnati -22 | 7-28 | Loss | -110 | 75 h 40 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units The Bearcats just continue on. They're in off a pair of back-to-back 11-win seasons, with current SU run of 14-3 (only misses coming vs Ohio State, & twice vs Memphis, who combined for a 25-3 record in '19. Fifteen returning starters, with strength along both offensive & defensive lines. In last week's win over an Army team, which entered with a 79-7 point edge (admittedly over Middle Tennessee & Monroe), they held the Knights to just one TD, that on a 41-yard fumble return. The Bulls are on an 8-15 spread run, managing to top 10 points in just 1 of their last 12 games. Thus, the 3-TD spread shouldn't scare anyone |
10-03-20 | South Carolina v. Florida -17.5 | 24-38 | Loss | -116 | 71 h 16 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Gator QB Trask took the 'Cocks apart last year, with 4 TD tosses. Ditto his effort in Florida's win over Ole Miss: 6 TD passes, 4 to TE Pitts, as Gators punted only once, in a 652-yard effort. Caveat? Try being stung for 613 yards themselves (Ole Miss). Gamecocks ranked 81st in rushing "O:" in '19, picking up where they left off, with a paltry overland yards in losing to Tennessee. Carolina has a 36-18 points per game deficit in its last 14 lined games, & serves as fodder for this oncoming train. |
10-03-20 | NC State v. Pittsburgh -14 | 30-29 | Loss | -107 | 71 h 6 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units The Panthers are off to a sweet 3-0 start, including last week's 23-20 upset of Louisville, allowing only 10 first downs & 223 total yards. And therein lies their advantage, a defense which ranked 13th in the land in '19 (11th vs the run). And they also have better states than 11 of their 12 opponents. In their 3 starts this season, they've allowed only 27 first downs & 173 rushing yards. Off to their best start since '14. In that win over the Cards, they posted 7 sacks & 3 picks. The 'Pack is in off a 314-169 rushing yard deficit, in losing to Virginia Tech. Not concerned with the 2-TD spot, as NC State is now on an 0-9 ATS slide when named as the dog. It's Pitt |
09-27-20 | Lions v. Cardinals -5 | 26-23 | Loss | -110 | 30 h 30 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Two QBs with completely different styles, as you have classic drop back passer in Stafford, & the "do-it-all" in Murray. No questioning the legitimacy of the quickly rising Cards, who have opened at 2-0 for first time since making the NFC Title game in '15. Another 353 scrimmage yards for Murray who has 3 rushing TDs of 20+ yards in his young career (Cards had just 2 total TD runs of 20+ yards by a QB from 1970-2018). As for the Lions, Sunday was the 10th time that Detroit led by double digits since last year (lost 7 of those 10). Are 0-2 for 5th time in Matthew Stafford era, finishing under .500 each of those |
09-27-20 | Jets v. Colts -11.5 | 7-36 | Win | 100 | 30 h 3 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Hard to believe that these 2 squads were playoff fixtures in the early 2000s. They played 3 times from '02, '09 & '10, with the Jets taking 2-of-3. New York's Darnold has been sacked in 18 straight games (longest active streak in NFL), & Jets at 0-2 for 3rd time in last 4 seasons. Note Jets allowing an 80-yard TD run on Niners' first play last week, while Indy "D" ceded only 3 points on the Vikings first 9 drives. Philip Rivers is tied with Fran Tarkenton (124) for the 8th-most wins as a starting in NFL history, & that Indy "D" is in off a splendid display, holding Minny to 11 pts, & 175 total yards |
09-27-20 | 49ers -3.5 v. Giants | 36-9 | Win | 101 | 27 h 51 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Was it really 34 years ago when the Giants' Jim Burt knocked out Joe Montana in the '86 Divisionals? Of course, the Giants went on to win their first Super Bowl 2 games later. Second of back-to-back games in this building for the Niners, who are 8-1 on the road since last year. Nice start for San Francisco in rout of the Jets, with 80-yard Mostert TD run in game's first play (he now has a TD in 8 consecutive road games: 2nd longest streak in team history). Giants now without RB Barkley, & that sinks them. NY is 2-17 since '18 vs all teams not named Washington. It all continu |
09-27-20 | Raiders v. Patriots -5.5 | 20-36 | Win | 100 | 27 h 44 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Hooray for the Raiders, in opening up their new stadium location, with that splendid upset of the Saints, behind Carr's 28-of-38, & a time controlling 36:18-23:42 edge. He looked as sharp as ever. So a short week, after the ultimate high, while traveling to Foxboro to take on the best coached team in the NFL. Hold onto your hats, but many an expert figures the Pats with Cam under center, just may be a tad better than with Brady (397 passing yards & 47 rushing yards in loss at Seattle). Sets up perfectly for patented Belichick win |
09-26-20 | Kansas v. Baylor -17 | Top | 14-47 | Win | 100 | 55 h 52 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit Big-12 Game of the Week This is one that the Bears always get, & get in style, covering the last 8 vs the always struggling Jayhawks, with last year's rout just the latest. No letup the rest of the year for BU, so the getting is good vs this vulnerable squad which has allowed 38+ points in 7 of its last 9 outings, with the only misses coming in 31 & 34 allowances. Only caveat is fact that the Jays did cover vs bowl-bound BC, Oklahoma, Texas, & Iowa State last year. History call. |
09-26-20 | Tennessee -3 v. South Carolina | Top | 31-27 | Win | 100 | 54 h 23 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit SEC Game of the Week What a nice display that the Vols presented in last year's stretch, covering 6-of-8 (7-1 SU: Alabama), & only 7 points from an 8-0 spread run. They return 16 starters, including their top 3 QBs, & their entire "D" line. A year ago, they took the 'Cocks apart, with a 24-0 2nd half edge, & the series visitor is a profitable 18-5 ATS. Carolina is just 26-30 SU of late, ranking 104th in scoring & 97th in total "O" last year. Revenge won't work here |
09-26-20 | Army +13 v. Cincinnati | 10-24 | Loss | -110 | 7 h 36 m | Show
Rating; 2 Units The Cadets have opened impressively enough, with a 776-112 rushing yard edge over the likes of Middle Tennessee State & Louisiana Monroe, which was something of a given, as those squads were hardly defensive stalwarts. The Bearcats, obviously, provide a much sturdier picture, returning 9 starters from last year's 48th-ranked stop unit. However, note that the Bearcats were stung for 353 yards by hapless Austin Peay in last week's cakewalk. Army has always been a thorn on the side of quality opposition, such as last year's 24-21 loss to Michigan, as a 3-TD dog |
09-26-20 | Kansas State v. Oklahoma -27.5 | Top | 38-35 | Loss | -115 | 47 h 12 m | Show |
Rating: 3 Unit Big-12 Play of the Day Okies' only road spread slip came at the hands of these Wildcats, featuring a 41-6 point run! 'Cats return only 3 offensive starters, which is crucial in staying with OU, which owns a mere 865-645 point edge in it last 21 games. Only 2-8 ATS (-96½ pts). The fact that the dog is 8-2 ATS in Kansas State games seems applicable, as well. However, we can't dismiss the history of this series, which shows home dominance. Okies |
09-26-20 | Florida v. Ole Miss +13.5 | 51-35 | Loss | -106 | 47 h 3 m | Show
Rating; 2 Units A year ago, the Gators finished 6th in the national polls, & deservedly so, as their 11-2 log was spoiled only by the likes of mighty Lsu & Georgia, while finishing 10th & 5th in total & scoring "D", & holding a 469-230 point edge in their last 13 lined games. Return 12 starters including QB Duo of Trask & Jones. The Rebels, however, are no pushovers, covering 7-of-last-8 (1-point miss vs A&M), & welcome aboard HC Lane Kiffin. Rebel yel |
09-20-20 | Patriots +4 v. Seahawks | 30-35 | Loss | -110 | 54 h 19 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Second time these 2 have met since questionable ending to '14 Super Bowl. No more Brady, but Cam did just fine: 15-of-19, with 75 rushing yards, along with a pair of TD plunges. So 17th game under Belichick with 200+ rushing yards, winning all 17. Get this: Cam is the first Pat QB with a Week 1 rushing TD since Jim Plunkett in 1974. For the Seahawks, Wilson opened with a bang vs the Falcons: 31-of-35, 322 yards, & TDs with no interceptions. However Seattle "D" has slipped, thereby opening Belichick door. So no breathing room |
09-20-20 | Chiefs -8.5 v. Chargers | 23-20 | Loss | -103 | 51 h 40 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Extra 3 days to prepare for the Champions, which is hardly what hopeful Chargers desire. The Chiefs have now won 10 straight games, both SU & ATS. What more can be said of Mahomes? Was 24-of-32, 211 passing yards & 3 TDs vs Texans. Completed more than 50% of his passes in each of his 37 career games. And now KC has added first class rusher in Edwards-Helaire (25 carries, 138 rushing yards in debut). L.A. was outscored 10-0 in 4th quarter of last week's 13-10 squeaker at Cincy |
09-20-20 | Ravens -7 v. Texans | Top | 33-16 | Win | 100 | 51 h 53 m | Show |
Rating: 3 Unit NFL Play of the Day Quite a pair of killers in which the Texans open the season (Chiefs & Ravens). Looked great in their opening 80-yard drive of the season, & stayed with KC, stat wise (9-yard deficit). That wasn't the case when these 2 met last season, as the Ravens posted a 491-232 yard edge in that 41-7 wipeout. Thirteen straight regular season wins for the Ravens (longest active streak in league). Baltimore is in off another opening drive TD (had 8 last year), with Jackson posting 7th game with 3+ TD passes & no picks since last year |
09-20-20 | Lions v. Packers -6 | 21-42 | Win | 100 | 47 h 22 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Seven straight division wins for the Pack, so obviously zeroed in on league competition. Check Rodgers' 32-of-44, 364 passing yards, & 4 TDs (no picks) in rout of Minny (522-382 yards edge). That's his fifth regular season game with 350+ passing yards & 4 TD passes with zero picks. His 368 career TDs passes now places him 7th on the all-time list. As for the Lions, they haven't won the division since '93. Only Cleveland has a longer drought. Led Bears 23-6 after 3 last week, only to allow 3 Trubisky TD passes in final 13:39. Very similar to opening '19 season by blowing 18-pt lead to Arizona, for the tie |
09-19-20 | Wake Forest v. NC State -2 | 42-45 | Win | 100 | 71 h 34 m | Show
Rating: 3 Units What a back breaker for us when the Deacons snuck in the backdoor, after trailing mighty Clemson 37-3 in the 3rd, despite managing just 15 first downs & 37 rushing yards. Wake has allowed 36.3 points per game in their last 6 outings, & has said goodbye to QB Newman, who had a field day vs the 'Pack last year. NC State has been horrid (247-100 point deficit in its last 6 games), but returns 17 starters (10 on "O"), & this the ultimate home series. |
09-19-20 | Appalachian State -4.5 v. Marshall | Top | 7-17 | Loss | -110 | 66 h 9 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit Mismatch of the Week We go to the well again, with the Mountaineers, who had trouble getting started in their eventual 35-20 win over Charlotte (1½ point spread setback), despite 29-16 first down & 512-286 yard advantages. Note holding the 49ers to just a pair of field goals & a 97-yard kick off return TD over the last 50 minutes. As per usual, the Mounties posted a nicely balanced attack (308 rushing yards, 204 passing yards), which meshed nicely with last year's 216 rushing yard & 213 passing yards per game. Nine returning offensive starters, with the 'Herd losing 7 defensive starters. Marshall isn't the best of homers, with current 1-6 ATS host run, coupled with Appalachian State's 13-7 ATS road favorite run. |
09-19-20 | Tulsa v. Oklahoma State -23 | 7-16 | Loss | -110 | 62 h 22 m | Show
Rating: 3 Units The always potent Cowboys return 18 starters from last year's 19th ranked offense, including the brilliant Hubbard, who led the nation in '19, with 2,094 rushing yards (21 TDs). And against the Hurricane, he set a personal high with 256 rushing yards. Just 4 defensive returnees for Tulsa, which was 90th in containing the run. Oklahoma State head coach Gundy annually fields explosive outfits, & this team is on a mission. Look for quick start |

09-19-20 | Boston College +6 v. Duke | Top | 26-6 | Win | 100 | 63 h 48 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit NCAAF Game of the Week Devils did themselves proud, in tight loss to Notre Dame, & despite managing just 75 rushing yards (QB Brice: 259 passing yards) trailed 17-13 in the 4th, before 27-13 final. That moved the dog to a super 16-7 ATS run in Duke tilts, but have allowed 38+ points in 4-of-last-7 contests. Eagles rarely non-competitive (current 19-9-1 ATS run), & have been a profitable road dog (covered their last road game by 34 points). New HC Hafley & QB Jurkovec rewarded |
09-14-20 | Steelers -6 v. Giants | 26-16 | Win | 100 | 34 h 40 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Last year, Steelers missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2012-13, with their 8 losses tying the most in 13 seasons under HC Mike Tomlin. Not only that, but they ended the season by managing 10, 10, & 10 pts in 0-3 windup. Then again, Ben wasn't playing. Remember, he missed 14 games with that elbow injury. And Conner posted only 330 RYs (fewest by Pitt's leading rusher since 1970). Giants in off 3rd straight 11+ loss season, & enter this season without Eli for the first time since 2003. Steelers the play. |
09-13-20 | Cardinals +7.5 v. 49ers | 24-20 | Win | 100 | 49 h 21 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units The Niners were sure in control of last year's Super Bowl, before head coach Shanahan decided to limit his dominant overland game. Opening vs the Cards may seem a "given", but San Francisco is banged up, & Arizona has always given the Niners more than decent competition, & look for Card QB Murray to extend his excellent play (>3,500 passing and rushing yards). The Super Bowl loser has gone 4-15-1 ATS since 2000, & the Niners will have to be at their best for a runaway to open the season. Cards are 4-0-1 ATS in this series of late, & worth a look as a TD dog |
09-13-20 | Browns v. Ravens -7.5 | 6-38 | Win | 100 | 88 h 59 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Without a doubt, last year's most disappointing teams were the Cowboys & Browns. Now 12 straight losing seasons, missing the playoffs 17 straight years, not winning their division since 1989 (27 yrs - longest active drought in NFL - 27 years). They now have their 12th head coach (Kevin Stefanski) since 1999. The rest of their division has a combined 8 head coaches over that same span. For Ravens, Lamar Jackson just continues to amaze, despite coming up short in the playoffs the past 2 years. When he is on, he is unstoppable. |
09-13-20 | Eagles -5.5 v. Washington Football Team | 17-27 | Loss | -108 | 88 h 52 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Insane stat: the NFC East has gone 15 straight seasons with a different champion, extending the longest stretch since the NFL merger. Not good news for Philly, although McNabb & Co did it 4 straight times ('01 thru '04). Eagles 14-4 SU vs division foes since '17 (all 4 losses to Dallas). Contrast that to 'Skins tying franchise record in futility last season, with 13 losses, & have now lost 10 straight division games for first time since 1993-94. Hard to believe they won division in '12 & '15. |
09-13-20 | Bears +3 v. Lions | 27-23 | Win | 100 | 46 h 1 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Bears have missed the playoffs 8 of the past 9 years, & haven't won a playoff game since 2010. However, they've won 9 of their last 11 division games, with a defense which was 4th best in NFL last year. Lions ended up 2019 with a 9-game losing streak, their first since 2009-10. Worst record for Detroit in 10 years, but then again Stafford was injured for a good portion of the year. Lions: 0-6 SU in division (1st time since 2012). |
09-12-20 | Coastal Carolina +7 v. Kansas | 38-23 | Win | 100 | 32 h 11 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units When a Big12 team takes on a member of the Sun Belt, the public invariably moves toward the Power 5 squad, such is the case in this contest. A year ago, the Chanticleers pulled off the minor upset of the Jayhawks, 12-7, in a game that featured the only favorite role for Kansas in the entire '19 season (9th such in the last 11 years). The 'Cleers return offensive linemen, & that is always key, as is the return of RB Marable, who posted 148 RYs in last year's meeting. The old adage, of "never back a bad team as a favorite" applies here, especially with the added fact that the Jays have no less than Baylor up next week. Thus the "look-ahead" angle has to be considered. Kansas returns only 9 starters, & with their recruiting woes, the green replacements are no answer |
09-12-20 | Clemson -32.5 v. Wake Forest | Top | 37-13 | Loss | -110 | 73 h 49 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit NCAAF Game of the Week The Tigers have had to live with that national title loss to LSU for 8 long months, and are chomping at the bit to get things going. An incredible SU record of 111-16 since '11, including 4 national title games. They couldn't contain the unstoppable, in last year's 42-25 loss to LSU & Joe Burrow, being outscored 35-8 to wind it up. This team has it all, & the fact the irrepressible Etienne has foregone the NFL to stay with this team speaks volumes. Clemson has outscored its last 25 lined opponents, 1,104-322, with a 353-61 point edge in its last 7 regular season tilts. Wake "D": 36.2 points per game in its last 5 games |
09-12-20 | UL-Lafayette +11.5 v. Iowa State | 31-14 | Win | 100 | 63 h 3 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units The Cyclone spread magic has vanished, at least as far as their current 0-4 slide (-55 pts ATS), with a 60-26 point deficit in last 2, is concerned. QB Purdy rareturns (3,982 yds, 27 TDs), & RB Hall is certainly a keeper, so note that the Cyclones are a home power. The 'Cajuns have been an overland power (#7), & ranked 9th in scoring, as well as 8th in total "O". La-La averaged 38 points per game in 10 of its last 11 road regular season lined games, & has been a solid play on the road. |
09-12-20 | Charlotte v. Appalachian State -17 | Top | 20-35 | Loss | -101 | 65 h 46 m | Show |
Rating: 3 Unit NCAAF Play of the Day They're off a running once again. ASt has to be one of the top "under-the-radar" squads in the land. Note 5 consecutive bowl seasons (5-0 SU, 4-1 ATS in holiday contests), reaching 31 pts in all five, & ranking 9th in scoring for the '19 season. Returning 9 offensive starters, including duel-threat QB Thomas, ensures a continuance of this school's brilliance, despite the departure of first-year HC Drinkwitz (to Missouri). A year ago, the 49ers were stung for 47.3 points per game in their first 6 games. Lambs to slaughter |
09-07-20 | BYU +1 v. Navy | 55-3 | Win | 100 | 34 h 55 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units The BYU Cougars have clawed their way to a 22-7 SU and 19-10 ATS mark against military teams dating back as far as 1980. In fact, in their only meeting against Navy they beat them, 31-10. Navy was the only team in the nation to improve both its offense and defense over 100 yards per game each last season’s 11-win campaign. However, coming off an 11-win effort last season, their offense lacks returning production (No. 100 overall) in 2020 and figures to take time to become a cohesive unit. Consider: BYU is 4-1 Game One and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games on field turf. While Navy is 1-3-1 ATS in their last five versus Independent teams. |
09-05-20 | Arkansas State v. Memphis -18.5 | 24-37 | Loss | -115 | 62 h 36 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Thanks to the recently revised CFB Rankings (post Big Ten and Pac-12 defections), the Tigers are the only ranked team playing this week and they take the field with a new head coach in Ryan Silverfield, a four-year assistant at Memphis. Don’t expect them to miss a beat as he knows the team like the back of his hand. Look for the Red Wolves to fall to 9-31-1 SU in openers here |
09-05-20 | SMU v. Texas State +22 | 31-24 | Win | 100 | 58 h 59 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units The visiting Mustangs put a 30-point beat down on the Bobcats last season but are only 5-18 SU and 6-15 ATS in season openers. That figures to have TSU fully focused here and with head coach Jake Spivital back in his second season in San Marcos, expect the home cats to improve to 7-2-1 ATS in their last ten games as dogs of 20-plus points |
09-05-20 | Middle Tennessee State v. Army -3 | 0-42 | Win | 100 | 55 h 2 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units After having a three-year bowl skein snapped with a 5-win effort last season, the Black Knights are a dangerous “mission team” this year. That’s not good news for the visiting Blue Man Group as military teams in “mission” seasons are 15-1 SU as home favorites, winning by an average margin of 14.4 points per game. With CUSA dogs of less than 6 points just 5-28 SU and 13-20 ATS against military teams, expect Army to begin their “mission” today. |
02-02-20 | 49ers v. Chiefs | 20-31 | Win | 100 | 198 h 18 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Fact that the Niners rank so high in all statistical columns (#1 "D") only cements their worth. But would they have gotten here at all, if not for narrow escape in season finale at Seattle? Ditto the Chiefs, who were presented with that bye, thanks to lowly Dolphin upset of the 16½ pt chalk Pats in final regular season game. Bucking the top defensive team in the NFL (Niners), especially when that squad is in the dog role, may seem suicidal. However, this Chief outfit, with the best QB in the NFL, has been extra special in its borderline miraculous performances, despite the circumstances (double digit deficits into double digit wins in both playoff games). All the ingredients of a classic matchup, with the edge to the Chiefs. |
01-19-20 | Packers v. 49ers -7.5 | 20-37 | Win | 100 | 30 h 3 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Niners are in the NFC Title game for the first time since 2013, tying the Steelers for the most all-time. What a gem they have in Garoppolo, who is now 21-5 as a starter, while the Niners are 7-2 at home this year. Check Richard Sherman with his first playoff interception since 2015, when he was still with the "Legion of Boom" in Seattle. And what a defense San Fran has molded, standing at 2nd, 4th, & 1st in total, scoring, & passing "D", while the 'Bay ranks 18th in total defense, as well as well as 23rd against the rush, in trying to corral SanFran's 2nd-ranked overland offense. The 7 FDs that the Niners allowed vs the Vikings is tied for the 3rd fewest in post-season history, sacking Cousins 6 times, & allowing only 21 RYs, the least in franchise playoff history. Except for Rodgers, the edges are all with the Niners. |
01-19-20 | Titans +8 v. Chiefs | 24-35 | Loss | -135 | 27 h 31 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units These 2 have certainly made their mark this preseason, with the Titans taking their first divisional playoff game since 2002, in shocking upset of Ravens, with a 230-yard deficit. It's also the first time since '99 that they've won multiple playoff games. Tannehill looked impressive in Baltimore, with both his arms & his legs (3 total TDs), with Henry rewriting the playoff rushing records. Try this: 377 rushing yards in this year's playoffs. He had 30 rushes for 195 yards in Baltimore, with his 561 rushing yards in his first 4 post-season games also an NFL record. First player in NFL history with 180 rushing yards in 3 straight games. Titans have played their best ball on the road of late, with the visitor winning & covering their last 7 games. KC is the streakiest team in the NFL, but the Titans have more than proven their worth. |
01-13-20 | Clemson v. LSU -5.5 | 25-42 | Win | 100 | 101 h 43 m | Show
Rating: 3 Units Bengal QB Burrow just makes it look so easy. The fact that he leads the nation in passing efficiency (5,208 yards, 55 touchdowns with only 6 interceptions, and 78% completions) is hardly a surprise. And he saves his best for the best, which proved out in both the SEC Title game (37-10 win, & 20-pt cover over Georgia), & the Semi-Final tilt (63-20 win, & 22-pt cover over Oklahoma). Check 349 passing yards (4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions) & 493 passing yards (7 touchdowns and 0 interceptions) in those two. LSU is also in possession of brilliant RB Edwards-Helaire (1,305 yards, 6.6 yards per rush, 16 TDs), who sat out the Oklahoma game. And, as far as the overhead goes, WRs Chase & Jefferson rank 2nd & 3rd in the land with 1,559 & 1,434 receiving yards, along with exact same 18 TD receptions. Jefferson: 4 TD catches from Burrow in the first half of romp over Oklahoma (49-14 lead at intermission). We've been in Dabo's corner for just about all of Clemson's biggies, resulting in a nice profit. Sure, both squads are allotted the same amount of tickets, which will be well worth every cent. However, this classic is played in Bengals' backyard. |
01-12-20 | Seahawks +4.5 v. Packers | 23-28 | Loss | -110 | 29 h 45 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Wilson is now 9-5 in the playoffs, after going 18-of-30, 325 yards, & a TD to go along with 45 RYs (team high). And note that Metcalf's 7 catches for 160 yards & a TD, set an NFL-rookie record for receiving yds. Seattle a league-best 8-1 on the road, & 11-2 in one-possession games this season. However Rodgers as brilliant as ever: 26/4. Many lead changes in store. |
01-12-20 | Texans v. Chiefs -9.5 | 31-51 | Win | 100 | 72 h 39 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units The Chiefs have consecutive seasons with 12+ wins for first time in franchise history. Texans outscored the Bills, 22-6 in 2nd half/OT, giving Bill O'Brien his 2nd playoff win in 6 seasons. First-ever win under O'Brien, when trailing by 16+ pts (had been 0-22). Watson ever-impressive (20-of-25, 247 yards, TD, 55 rushing yards, rushing TD). He was 4-for-4 for 72 yards on game winning drive. His rare negatives were his 7 sacks (51 this year). However, a rested Mahomes & Co should penetrate Texans' 29th ranked passing "D". Chiefs nail it. |
01-11-20 | Titans v. Ravens -9.5 | 28-12 | Loss | -110 | 53 h 1 m | Show
Rating: 3 Units Baltimore now faces a team that just knocked of the 6-time Super Bowl champs, behind Henry's 183 rushing yards, 22 receiving yards, & a TD. He is the first player with 200+ scrimmage yards against a Belichick-coached NFL team in a playoff game. Tannehill threw for just 72 yards and had that awful pick. Fewest passing yards in a playoff win by any team since '09 Ravens. Bask in that win, but these Ravens are relentless, & as we are familiar, we've taken this Lamar Jackson led "O" to the bank with regularity, & aren't about to jump ship. He is one of a kind. So lay it. |
01-11-20 | Vikings v. 49ers -7 | 10-27 | Win | 100 | 49 h 24 m | Show
Rating: 3 Units Cousins got his first playoff win in that thriller in New Orleans, as Vikings also got their first road playoff win since 2004. Cook came back with 94 rushing yards, and 2 TDs, while Thielen had 7 receptions for 129 yards, including that grab on Cousin's deep ball that set up the game-winning TD pass to Rudolph. And Minnesota "D" stepped up big time putting the heat on Brees with their 10 QB pressures. Can Garoppolo handle his first playoff start? Well, he has an outstanding cast surrounding him, as Niners rank 4th, or better, in 6-of-8 major statistical columns. Vikings come down to earth in this one. |
01-05-20 | Seahawks v. Eagles +1 | 17-9 | Loss | -110 | 18 h 45 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Much like the Patriots, can the Seahawks get over the letdown of playing this weekend? That delay-of-game penalty from the Niners' 1-yard line with 22 seconds to go could end up haunting them forever, made all the more maddening was Beast Mode was about to take it in. Wentz is the first Eagle QB to pass for over 4,000 yards in a season, despite that poor start. A season of streaks for Philly, as 3 straight losses seemed to eliminate them from post-season play, only to follow that up with season-ending run, while topping 30 pts in 3 of their last 5 outings. A huge turnover edge for the Seahawks in this one. Call a levelling of that stat, resulting in playoff home call. |
01-05-20 | Vikings v. Saints -7.5 | 26-20 | Loss | -110 | 14 h 15 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Not the best of times for Minnesota to show its kryptonite, losing back-to-back games for the first time all year, altho they didn't play anyone in last week's |
01-04-20 | Titans v. Patriots -4 | 20-13 | Loss | -115 | 7 h 59 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units The New England Patriots were all but penciled in for a first-round bye, needing only to beat lowly Miami at home in their regular-season finale to clinch the No. 2 seed in the AFC. Instead, after a stunning 27-24 loss to the Dolphins, New England will play in the wild-card round for the first time since 2009 when it hosts the Tennessee Titans today night. Bidding to advance to the Super Bowl for a fourth consecutive season, the Patriots failed to earn a bye for only the fourth time in 17 trips to the postseason dating to 2001. Brady has a record 16 300-yard games in the playoffs, including 12 straight with at least 250 yards passing. Clinchers: Titans are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 meetings in New England while the Patriots are 42-20-3 ATS in their last 65 home games. |
01-04-20 | Bills +3 v. Texans | 19-22 | Push | 0 | 3 h 18 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Buffalo has slowly leaned on Devin Singletary in the backfield, and the rookie has paid dividends with a robust 5.1 yards per carry that ranks fifth best in the NFL. John Brown led the team with 72 receptions and 1,060 yards while his six touchdown catches were tied with Cole Beasley. The Bills' bread and butter resides on the other side of the ball, as its stingy defense ranked second in the regular season in scoring (16.2 points allowed per game) and third in total yardage allowed (298.2). Pro Bowl cornerback Tre'Davious White, who shared the NFL lead with six interceptions, will draw the assignment of guarding Hopkins. Buffalo tied a franchise record with six wins on the road this season. Watson didn't fare well in his last meeting with the Bills, as he was sacked seven times, threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. |
01-04-20 | Tulane -7 v. Southern Miss | Top | 30-13 | Win | 100 | 63 h 23 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit Bowl Mismatch of the Month The Wave normally rests up during the bowl season, with last year's 41-24 Cure Bowl win (-3½) over La-Lafayette just its 3rd such game since 1998. Thus, this marks their 2nd straight bowl season, something which hasn't happened in Tulane link history since '79 & '80. And the Greenies have won 3 of their last 4 bowls ('98, '02, '18). 'Wave is 5-1 ATS as the chalk this year |
01-02-20 | Boston College v. Cincinnati -7 | Top | 6-38 | Win | 100 | 46 h 24 m | Show |
Rating: 3 Unit Bowl Game of the Day For the 'Cats, they've played in 17 bowls, with an 8-9 SU record, with this one making it 16 in the last 23 seasons. Hardly competitive in '13 Belk, '14 Military, & '15 Hawaii, before last year's thrilling 35-31 win over Virginia Tech, also in the Military, which featured 7 lead changes. Accolades to their defensive front 7, holding 6 opponents to 14 points, or less. Offensively balanced behind QB Ridder (25 touchdowns and 9 interceptions), with 545 rushing yards, & RB Warren (14 TDs), they should continue vs lacking Eagle defense. |
01-01-20 | Baylor v. Georgia -4 | Top | 14-26 | Win | 100 | 28 h 18 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit Bowl Game of the Month From 1996-2009, BU suffered through 14 straight losing seasons. But the arrival of QB Robert Griffin, & head coach Art Briles did wonders, with seven straight winning seasons, including 4 double digit victory campaigns, ranking 1st in both scoring & total "O" in '13 & '14. But then a scandal resulting in a 1-11 record in '17. However a quick recovery, & a 45-38 win over Vandy in '18 Texas Bowl (30 first downs, 668 yards). This year, they've tasted defeat only twice, both to Oklahoma, in similarly tight 34-31 & 30-23 (OT) finals. But a closer look shows the Bears with 34-18, 21-8 first down & 228-113, 239-116 rushing yard deficits. And QB Brewer is still questionable (concussion). Can the Bulldogs learn from last year's Sugar Bowl loss, as well last month's embarrassing 37-10 rout vs LSU in the SEC title game? Note that Georgia has allowed just 1 rushing TD all year, ranking 3rd, 2nd, & 4th in rushing, scoring, & total defense. Stats favor the 'Dawgs. |
01-01-20 | Minnesota v. Auburn -6.5 | 31-24 | Loss | -118 | 21 h 38 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units As per usual, the Tigers are a force: 7 bowls in Malzahn's 7 years (2-4 SU, 3-3 ATS): consecutive 34-31 losses in '13 & '14 (BCS Championship & Outback), while making up for 34-27 '17 Outback Bowl loss to UCF, with '18's 63-14 Music City stomping of Purdue, with a 586-263 yard edge. This season was highlighted by bookend wins over Oregon (overcoming 21-6 deficit in 3rd, winning on 26-yard TD pass in final 0:09) & Alabama (2 "pick-6" TDs, one of 100-yards). QB Nix ranks 86th in passing efficiency (56%), while AU's overland game has been bested just 3 times, with each coming in their only SU losses (Florida, Lsu, & Georgia). Quality of opposition is all in Auburn's corner. |
01-01-20 | Michigan v. Alabama -7 | Top | 16-35 | Win | 100 | 21 h 44 m | Show |
Rating: 3 Unit Bowl Game of the Day Fifth straight bowl for Wolves, since the arrival of Harbaugh, 9th in the last 10 years, & 48th overall. The downside shows UM losing its last 3 bowls: 33-32 in '16 Orange (89 rushing yards vs Florida State), 26-19 in '17 Outback (led South Carolina, 19-3 in 3rd), & 41-25 in '18 Peach (257-77 rushing yard deficit vs Florida). Ranking 6th in total "D" this year didn't prevent their normal wipe out loss to Ohio State (56-27), with a 264-91 rushing yard deficit. Wolves 6-15 SU in bowls after ending the regular season with a loss. |
12-31-19 | Kansas State v. Navy -2.5 | Top | 17-20 | Win | 100 | 43 h 19 m | Show |
Rating: 5 Unit Bowl Game of the Year For the Middies, it's the same old thing: rushing. They lead the nation in the run, after finishing at #5 in last year's embarrassing 10-loss campaign. QB Perry, of course, is the key, with 1,804 rushing yards, 6.8 yards per rush, & 21 TDs. In Mids' showdown games with Houston, & Army, he guided Navy to 447-134, 395-123 rushing yard edges in 56-41 & 31-7 wins, personally rushing for 304 yards vs the Cadets. Defensively, Navy has improved, dramatically, coming from 89th in rushing "D", to 17th this year, & from 111th in total defense, to 20th this time around. The spread on this game has moved about a FG, after Middies dominated Army. Tenth bowl for Niumatalolo, who has made drastic changes, paying off with this year's 21st-ranking in the polls. SU winner pays off |
12-30-19 | Virginia v. Florida -14 | Top | 28-36 | Loss | -110 | 24 h 47 m | Show |
Rating: 4 Unit Bowl Game of the Month This season, Gators only missteps came in 42-28 & 24-17 losses to top-ranked LSU, & 5th-ranked Georgia. Not bad company. In both games, Gators' top defensive performer (LB Greenard) was either out, or under the weather. In that loss to LSU, the Gators (+14) led 28-21 halfway thru the 3rd, (3 QB Trask TD passes), before an 0-21 windup, & eventual push. Loss to Georgia featured an anemic 119-21 rushing yard deficit, reflective of Gators' 121st ranking in overland production. However, QB Trask is at 67.8%, with a sweet 24/6 TD to INT ratio. Defensively? Try 14th, 17th, 7th, 10th, in run, pass, scoring, & total. Two months have passed since Florida's last loss, while the Cavs demoralized by 62-17 loss to Clemson in ACC title match, allowing 619 yards. Defensive comparisons, & history favor Gators. |
12-29-19 | Steelers v. Ravens +2 | 10-28 | Win | 100 | 25 h 44 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Ravens clinched #1 seed with that comeback win cover vs the Browns. Eleven straight wins, with a current 8-1 spread run, enabling them to rest anyone, but 3 weeks could make them rusty. You know they want to knock out the Steelers with a win here, however they need to give Ingram a break, after leaving last week's game with that calf injury. Jackson now 36 touchdowns with 6 interceptions, with another 103 rushing yards in Cleveland. Astounding. Pitt needs a win, & a Titan loss for a playoff slot. Have lost 7+ games for 1st time since '13. |
12-29-19 | Raiders v. Broncos -3 | 15-16 | Loss | -125 | 25 h 40 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Believe it, or not, the Raiders are not out of it yet, needing losses by Tenn & Pitt, a Colts' win, & a win over these Broncos, to grab the #6 spot. Piece of cake. Carr's best game of the year in last week's upset of the Chargers (26/30, 291 yards, TD pass, & TD run), on their way to first sweep of the Bolts in 3 years. Broncos have come full cycle since opening up at 0-4, & failing to top 16 points in 6 of their first 8 games. Three straight home wins for first time in 3 years, with Lock now 3-1 since taking over under center. And check RB Lindsay, with Broncos 5-0 when he surpasses he century mark. |

12-29-19 | Redskins v. Cowboys -12 | 16-47 | Win | 100 | 25 h 31 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Redskins have lost 7+ home games for only the 2nd time in franchise history (1994). Also 9 straight division losses for first time since '93-'94, although Keenum came in & played great for injured Haskins (16-of-22, TD pass, TD run). Dak was off in last week's loss to the Eagles, although the Boys had 6 dropped passes. Still can't believe that Zeke had only 13 carries with everything on the line with a banged up QB. So 8-game NFC East winning streak was snapped. But a win here, & Giant win over Philly, will snag Wild Card. |
12-29-19 | Chargers v. Chiefs -8 | 21-31 | Win | 100 | 21 h 12 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Chiefs are playing some of their best ball of the season. During these 5 straight wins, their "D" is giving up fewer than 10 points per game. Back-to-back weeks of holding their opponents to 3 points. Hard to believe that the Chargers won a playoff game in Baltimore last year. Bolts now 0-5 in the division & have lost 10+ games for the first time in Lynn's tenure as head coach. Six home losses for 1st time in 16 years, but can you really call them home games, with all the opposing fans there? Can't buck KC. |
12-29-19 | Packers v. Lions +13.5 | 23-20 | Win | 100 | 21 h 10 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Eight straight losses for the Lions, for the first time in seven years, with their 3-11-1 log their worst start in 10 years. And that, after opening the season at 2-0-1. So back-to-back 10-loss seasons. Could this be it for Patricia? Seems crazy how Belichick's disciples struggle as head coaches. Home field hardly favors Detroit, as the Lions are on a 2-8 spread run when hosting NFC opponents. However, in somewhat of a shocker, Detroit has covered its last 5 games with the Packers. So why not try it again? |
12-28-19 | Memphis +7.5 v. Penn State | 39-53 | Loss | -110 | 4 h 10 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units This year, the Nits had to replace QB McSorley, & his 9,899 career passing yards. However, a team at this level simply plugs in a competent replacement, which is just what the Lions did, with soph QB Clifford at 2,521 yards, 59.5%, & 22 touchdowns with 6 interceptions. However, he is ailing (leg), but is expected to start here, after missing regular season finale vs Rutgers (19 point ATS loss). The Lions rank 5th in rushing "D", a huge improvement over last year's 71st ranking. That unit had better be at its best, if it is to contain the overhead talent of Memphis Tiger QB White, who ranks 9th in the land with 3,560 yards & 33 touchdowns with 9 interceptions, after posting 3,296 yards & 26 touchdowns and 9 interceptions a year ago. Memphis' only slip this year came in a four TO 30-28 loss to Temple. And White is just a part of 3-piece offensive triumvirate of White, RB Gainwell (1,425 yards, 12 TDs), & WR Coxie (1,144 yards, 9 TDs). |
12-27-19 | Washington State v. Air Force -2.5 | 21-31 | Win | 100 | 37 h 52 m | Show
Rating: 3 Units The Falcons of Air Force return to the bowl scene, after missing out previous 2 years, as they rank 3rd in the nation in rushing, with an added weapon in QB Hammond, who has clicked on passing TDs of 31, 50, 28, 46, 59, 27, 76, & 75 yards over their last 3 games. Absolutely incredible, & all the more intimidating for that Cougar "D", which simply cannot load up in attempting to contain the run. Military schools normally do themselves proud in bowl games, with the Falcons obliging nicely, with their current 5-2 ATS run in holiday tilts. Can't see the Falcons smothering the Coogs' passing, nor the Cougars containing the suddenly dual offense of Air Force. A Falcon call. |
12-27-19 | USC +2.5 v. Iowa | 24-49 | Loss | -105 | 35 h 30 m | Show
Rating: 3 Units This marks Trojans' 53rd bowl (eliminating a win & loss due to NCAA penalty), with a superb 34-18 SU record. USC lives by the pass, ranking 129th overland, & 5th overhead, with Frosh QB Slovis nation's 8th-ranked QB (2,738 passing yards & 14 touchdowns with 7 interceptions), while winding up the regular season vs Ucla with a superb 37-of-47 for 515 passing yards & 4 touchdowns with 0 picks. For the Hawkeyes, this makes 17 bowls in 19 years, all under the leadership of Ferentz: 8-8 SU & 10-6 ATS, with similar 27-20 & 27-22 (-2½, +7) wins in '17 Pinstripe, & '18 Outback, despite 383-200 & 342-199 yard deficits (3 takeaways in each). This year, Iowa seems totally dependent on its "D", which ranks 3rd & 12th in scoring & total defense. "O" an entirely matter, coming in at 96th, 97th, & 98th in scoring, rushing, & total offense. Hawkeyes rank 19th in AP poll, with weekly nail biters the norm, as 7 of last 10 games decided by TD or less |
12-27-19 | Michigan State v. Wake Forest +4 | 27-21 | Loss | -107 | 4 h 24 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units For the Spartans, & their 16 returning starters, the year got off nicely, winning 4-of-5, while scoring 28, 51, 31, & 40 points, & holding their first 4 foes to 11.0 points per game. However, the dam broke quickly, dropping their next five games SU, with an accompanying horrible 6 straight ATS setbacks, also a 202-101 point deficit, entering their final 2 games with a 4-6 record, before taking the likes of 2-10 Rutgers & 3-9 Maryland, to somewhat save their season (at least a bowl). Deacons have narrowly won (34-26, 55-52, & 37-34) & covered 3 straight bowls, with this a chance for their first-ever 4-game winning bowl streak. Opened this year at 7-1 before rout losses to Va Tech & Clemson, & may have lost the services of stellar QB Newman (23 touchdowns with 10 interceptions), along with WR Surratt. Much like the Spartans, the Deacons returned a bushel of talent from last year's bowl-winning squad, & reached the 20th spot in the land, before their less than successful home stretch. Sure, always a possibility of a Big Ten blowout, but Deacons hang in this contest |
12-26-19 | Miami-FL v. Louisiana Tech +6.5 | 0-14 | Win | 100 | 146 h 56 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units The Bulldogs are a perennial bowl entrant, & need this for their first-ever 10 win season, but you'd never know it, as this one marks their 6th consecutive bowl campaign. Not only that, but they've won all of those first 5, covering all but '16's 48-45 win over Navy, as 7-point favorites. Their one-two punch of QB Smith (2,814 Passing yards, 17.4) & RB Henderson (967 rushing yards, 15 TDs) is formidable. Tech's quality of opposition at the bottom of all bowl squads, but UM's dedication is questionable. |
12-23-19 | Packers v. Vikings -5 | 23-10 | Loss | -110 | 52 h 46 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Packers can breath a sigh of relief, after the end of the Bears' game, & can clinch division by winning either of their last 2 games. Now 4-0 in division for 1st time in 7 years. Rodgers last 8 games; 16 TDs & zero picks. Vikes can clinch a playoff berth with one more win. Have now won 10+ games for the 3rd time in Zimmer's 6 seasons. It's the first time it has happened to Cousins. Minny in off biggest margin of victory on the road since '92. Well, SEVEN takaways facilitate such prowess. Vikes may be better team. |
12-22-19 | Chiefs -6 v. Bears | 26-3 | Win | 100 | 28 h 9 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Great road test in cold weather for the Chiefs, as they most likely have to go on the road in the Divisionals & AFC Title game, if they make it that far. Now Ten division titles in the career of Andy Reid. And has won 26 of last 28 division games. Fifth straight year with at least 10 wins. Four straight for the Chiefs, allowing 11.3 ppg in that span. Mahomes vs Broncos: 27-of-34 for 340 yards & 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Bears officially eliminated from the playoffs, despite a 416-292 yard edge over the Packers. Chiefs again. |
12-22-19 | Jaguars v. Falcons -7 | 12-24 | Win | 100 | 21 h 42 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Two of the more disappointing squads this season. Minshew & Jags got their 2nd last-second road win vs the AFC West in last week's win over the Raiders (took Broncs in Sept, at the buzzer, as well). He was 5-of-6 & a TD in that game winning drive. It was Jags' first West Coast win since Jan of 2005 (0-9 prior). Despite the win, that's 6 straight games Jags have not topped 20 points. Falcons 4-2, after starting at 1-7, with 2 of those wins at New Orleans & San Francisco. Impressive, to say the least. Momentum all Falcons. |
12-22-19 | Ravens -10 v. Browns | 31-15 | Win | 100 | 21 h 38 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Can the Browns do the unthinkable & sweep this juggernaut? Ten straight wins for the smoking hot Ravens. The last team to beat them? The Cleveland Browns. Ravens scored TDs on their first 3 possessions vs the Jets, on their way to clinching the AFC North. Five more TD passes for Jackson, to go along with his record 1,108 rushing yards. He now has 33 touchdown passes this season. More TD passes than Ravens have punts. Chubb: most rushing yards by a Brown since Jim Brown in '65. Ravens roll on |
12-22-19 | Bengals v. Dolphins +2 | 35-38 | Win | 100 | 21 h 34 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units A loss here, & Bengals will have Joe Burrow under center next season. For a while, there was a distinct possibility that this one could have pitted a couple of 0-15 squads battling against each other. But both rookie head coaches righted their respective ships to avoid that fate. Cincinnati gave up 150+ rushing yards for the 7th time this season (most in the NFL). Dalton: 4 picks last week. Miami can't get out of Gotham quick enough, after back-to-back losses in Metlife Stadium, to the lowly Jets & Giants. Nine DD losses for Fish. |
12-21-19 | Washington v. Boise State +3.5 | 38-7 | Loss | -110 | 30 h 30 m | Show
Rating: 3 Units Rumors of Washington QB Eason sitting this one out are rampant, especially with the loss of Peterson, along with senior tackle Adams also declining to participate. Obviously neither team is at its normal best, and although the Huskies are down, defensively, we feel the loss of QB Browning & RB Gaskin hasn't been resolved. Boise has not reached 13 wins since joining the Mountain West, as it had 4 previous years. Bronco QB Henderson has been a solid replacement for Bachmeier, with his 63.2% & 11 touchdowns with 2 interception ratio. Plenty of legitimate interest here, which won't be lost on anyone, either on or off the field. |
12-21-19 | Bills +7 v. Patriots | 17-24 | Push | 0 | 27 h 42 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Not many would have predicted how huge this game was going to end up being, when the schedule came out last April. But here they are, with the Bills just a game back, after their brutal win at Pittsburgh. Pats always seem to be in Foxboro to wind up the season, after clinching a playoff berth for the 11th consecutive season, & it will be 11 straight division titles with one more win. Brady with just 128 passing yards vs Cincinnati, but did toss 2 more TDs. Bills are 3-0-1 ATS at New England, & won't back off in this one |
12-21-19 | Liberty v. Georgia Southern -4 | 23-16 | Loss | -110 | 25 h 37 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units First bowl trip for Liberty, in its first year of eligibility, with the Flames doing it overhead, behind the passing of Calvert (3,393 yards, 58.8%, & 26/5), & the receiving of Gandy-Golden, who ranks 3rd in the nation with 1,333 yards (18 yards per catch). Hugh Freeze has replaced Turner Gill, as Head Coach of the Flames, after being dismissed at Ole Miss, coaching the first few games from a hospital bed (staph infection). So, it's the "grind-it-out" offense of Eagles vs the quick-strike "O" of the Flames. Both want this badly, but Georgia Southern experience will be the edge. |
12-20-19 | Buffalo -6.5 v. Charlotte | 31-9 | Win | 100 | 20 h 44 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Loss of a dozen starters, including All-MAC QB Jackson, got Bulls off to 2-4 start, but just one more loss (last 0:00, with an 0-24 windup at Kent). RB Patterson is the real deal (1,626 rushing yards, 17 TDs), while the Bulls placed 12 players on All-MAC teams. The 49ers of Charlotte are bowling for the first time in their limited history, winding up with 5 straight wins (4-1 ATS: +40½ points), while ranking 97th in run "D", in direct contrast to the Bulls, who come in at #4 vs the rush. And note just one Niner win over a winning team (Marshall). The SU winner stands at 10-1 vs the points in Bull games. We'll back the non-novice bowl squad, with much to prove. |
12-15-19 | Rams v. Cowboys | 21-44 | Loss | -117 | 28 h 49 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Can "America's Team" turn it around? Three straight losses for the 2nd time this year, & have lost 7-of-10 after starting 3-0. Despite that, all they need is a win over the Eagles, & one other win and they will host a playoff game. Hard to believe. 'Boys need a new place kicker asap, as Maher has missed 10 field goals this season. This is a rematch of last year's Divisionals, when the Rams (-7) took the 'Pokes, 30-22. But this time, it's in Dallas. L.A. has been superb, following their disaster vs the Ravens |
12-15-19 | Browns -2.5 v. Cardinals | 24-38 | Loss | -120 | 27 h 15 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Battle of the Young Gun QBs, former Sooners, former Heisman Trophy winners, & 1st overall draft picks. Oh, yeah, all of this took place in back-to-back seasons (Mayfield & Murray). Baker joins Sipe & Kosar as only Brown QBs with over 3,000 yards in back-to-back seasons, while Chubb over 100 rushing yards for 6th time this year . Cards showed early season promise, but have lost 6 straight home games for first time in 7 years. As a matter of fact, in the past 2 seasons, the Cards are 2-12-1 at home. Enuff for Brown call. |
12-15-19 | Broncos v. Chiefs -10 | 3-23 | Win | 100 | 24 h 27 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Who are these guys? Drew Lock may be the answer for the Broncos. Sure didn't look like a rookie playing his first ever road game against the likes of the Texans, with Denver scoring on its first five possessions, as Broncs topped 24 points for 1st time since last Oct. KC clinched 4th straight AFC West title with upset of Pats. With Andy Reid at the helm, KC has won 9+ games in each of his 7 seasons, with "D" also stepping up big time. |
12-15-19 | Eagles v. Redskins +6 | 37-27 | Loss | -109 | 24 h 20 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Eagles coming off their Monday Nighter vs the Giants are tied with the Cowboys for lead in NFC East. However, playing the Redskins isn't a guaranteed "W" anymore, as Washington continues to be frisky in Vegas, covering 3 straight. They're officially eliminated from the playoffs, as their loss column has hit double digits for the first time in 5 years. Peterson with another TD last week, becoming the 6th player in NFL history with 14,000 yards. We'll take the home division dog here |
12-15-19 | Bucs -5 v. Lions | 38-17 | Win | 100 | 24 h 17 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Hard to believe that there was a time when these 2 squads were consistent playoff contenders. In fact, they faced off in the '97 Wild Card in Tampa (Bucs won 20-10). If that game with the Colts doesn't summarize Winston (33-of-45: 456 yards, 4 TDs & 3 Interceptions, including a "pick-6") than nothing will. Try 23 turn overs in his last 8 games. Bucs eliminated from playoffs, despite on 3-game run for 1st time in 3 years. Six straight losses for Lions, & 0-5 in division, while off to their worst start in 9 years. And another |
12-14-19 | Army +11.5 v. Navy | 7-31 | Loss | -110 | 4 h 23 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units The Middies owned the Cadets, with a 14-game winning steak ('02 thru '15), but the Knights have gone 3-0 SU (2-0-1 ATS) since, & the series dog is on a 4-0-1 spread run, with final SU margins of 7, 4, 4, 1 & 7 points. last year, Navy (+7) got the push on a 46-yard field goal in the last 0:29, despite a 222-127 rushing yard deficit. Mids on a 10-3 ATS run, as well as a 6-1 ATS chalk. Cadets 12-6 ATS away, but 0-11 ATS away with rest off a SU loss. A double digit spot here? Call yet another dog cover, just as struggling Knights did vs Air Force. |
12-12-19 | Jets v. Ravens -14 | 21-42 | Win | 100 | 47 h 25 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Rex Ryan bowl. Needless to say, this will be a tough venue for Sam Darnold. Jets bounced back from the embarrassing loss to Cincinnati, to pull off last-second win over the Dolphins. Have won 4-of-5 since starting 1-7, & have won 3 straight home games for first time in 3 years. Sam's last 5 games: 11 touchdowns with 2 interceptions. Raven machine keeps purring, with 9 straight wins, with Jackson only the 2nd QB in NFL history to rush for over 1,000 yards (Michael Vick). And Raven "D" has held 7-of-8 foes under 18 points. Crank it up in this one. |
12-09-19 | Giants v. Eagles -9 | 17-23 | Loss | -110 | 57 h 13 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units So much for the Eagles having the easiest remaining schedule in the NFL. Started celebrating too early after going up 28-14 in Miami. Were manhandled from that point on (outscored 23-3 while ceding 264 yards). First 3-game losing streak for Philly since 2016. Giants officially eliminated from the playoffs after dropping their 8th straight. First time they've done that in 5 yrs. Shurmur joining Ray Perkins to lose 10+ games in their 1st 2 seasons as Giants head coach. Barkley with 115 yards from scrimmage last week |
12-08-19 | Seahawks +1 v. Rams | 12-28 | Loss | -106 | 33 h 21 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Fifty starts under the belt for Goff and it showed (32/43, 424 yards & 2 TDS). Second game this yr with over 500 yards of total offense. Gurley with 96 yards rushing & a TD. Rams have won 5 straight over the Cards by a total of 164-32. With the exception of the Ravens that Rams D has held their last 5 opponents to less than 17 points per game. Woods 172 yards receiving & Higbee with 107 yards receiving and a TD. Seahawks in off Monday Nighter, & are 10-0 ATS away vs a .500+ opponent. More room than 1st match. |
12-08-19 | Ravens -6 v. Bills | 24-17 | Win | 100 | 26 h 11 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units There was no way that Jackson could possibly duplicate his magnificent display in Monday's 45-6 thrashing of the Rams. However, Ravens winning streak is now 8 games, the latest coming on Justin Tucker's 49-yard field goal at the gun. Baltimore now 14-of-18 on 4th down tries, while Jackson is at 20 TDs & zero picks in his last 7 games. Bills were spectacular at Dallas, with Allen looking like John Elway. Three more TDs without a turnover. Bills guaranteed first winning record since 2000. Ravens again |
12-08-19 | Dolphins v. Jets -5 | 21-22 | Loss | -103 | 26 h 8 m | Show
Rating: 2 Units Jets 3-game winning streak is over, after that embarrassing loss to Cincinnati, to the previously win less Bengals. Jets are only team in NFL history to lose 2 games in a season, to teams with an 0-7 record, or worse. Now 1-7 vs the AFC, while failing to reach the Red Zone. What a fake field goal for the Dolphins! Never seen anything like that before, with Sanders the first kicker to catch a TD since Jim Turner in '77 for the Broncos. Fish scored on 6 of first 7 drives, but Jets scored 34 points in each of last 2 home games. |
