Bettors with a particularly strong feel for a certain individual can get a head start (and perhaps added value) by locking in their bets well before training camps open.
Last season, Michael Thomas of the Saints led the rest of the league by a healthy margin with over 1700 receiving yards. No one else even reached 1400.
Thomas’ total leads a list of 44 different wide receivers and tight ends in 2020. CappersPicks will cover each one and make a call on whether to go over or under in a multi-part series.
Travis Kelce
In two years with Patrick Mahomes, Kelce has averaged over 1280 yards per season. Even with Alex Smith in the two years prior, Kelce averaged 1100 per. He is the only tight end in NFL history with four consecutive 1000-yard seasons.
A slip-up would be unforeseen here. However, Kelce will turn 31 in October and he is coming off the Super Bowl Championship.
The consistency has been remarkable but it won’t last forever. Kelce could still have a nice season and finish under his lofty total. An injury or even the possibility of a slight decline makes the under perhaps the less popular but the more prudent play.
Prediction: Under 1100.5
Darius Slayton
Slayton led the Giants in receiving yards (740) and touchdowns (8) as a rookie in 2019, despite not debuting until Week 3.
Oddsmakers are expecting a sophomore slump and have posted a total even lower than his rookie numbers.
I’m not buying it. Daniel Jones was quick to develop a confidence in Slayton. The upside is just way too high here.
Prediction: Over 700.5
Juju Smith-Schuster
After posting more than 2300 yards in his first two seasons, Smith-Schuster had a disappointing 2019.
It was his first season without Antonio Brown on the opposite side of the field but he also suffered an injury and missed four games and, when he was healthy, had to catch passes from Mason Rudolph instead of Ben Roethlisberger.
His fortune should return in 2020. He and his quarterback are both healthy and Diontae Johnson got a chance to cut his teeth as a rookie last year. I’m buying a bounce-back season for Smith-Schuster.
Prediction: Over 1100.5
Breshad Perriman
Perriman was a first round pick in 2015 but his career looked like a bust until late last season.
He had done little in his first season as a Buccaneer until Week 13 when he caught five balls for 87 yards. That began a run of the last five weeks of the season, in which he had over 500 yards receiving.
Apparently, that was enough to convince the Jets, who brought him in for $8 million to be a starting wideout.
Jameis Winston threw for over 5000 yards last season and isn’t even a starting quarterback going into 2020. Count me skeptical of Perriman’s prospects in New York.
Prediction: Under 700.5
