Bettors with a particularly strong feel for a certain individual can get a head start (and perhaps added value) by locking in their bets well before training camps open.
Last season, Michael Thomas of the Saints led the rest of the league by a healthy margin with over 1700 receiving yards. No one else even reached 1400.
Thomas’ total leads a list of 44 different wide receivers and tight ends in 2020. CappersPicks will cover each one and make a call on whether to go over or under in a multi-part series.
DeAndre Hopkins
Hopkins missed just the second game of his seven-year career in 2019 but still caught 104 balls for 1165 yards with the Texans. He has averaged well over 1200 yards since putting on an NFL uniform.
But all that earned him was a trade to Arizona, where he will now team up with Kyler Murray in his second season.
It’s difficult for a receiver to change teams and Murray, for all his talent, does not throw the deep ball like Deshaun Watson does.
But the fire inside of Hopkins will be burning strong all season to prove his former team he is not over the hill. With all the targets he will likely hope for, Hopkins gets over.
Prediction: Over 1150.5
Jalen Reagor
The Eagles spent their first round pick on a young man out of TCU they hope will become Carson Wentz’s favorite target for years to come.
Alshon Jeffrey is still in the mix but getting no younger. DeSean Jackson will attract safety help over the top on the other side but he is no possession receiver.
The job will fall to the rookie Reagor, who projects as a slot receiver. The Eagles have plenty of options over the middle between Jeffrey and their two tight ends, Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert.
But Went will be delighted to have so many talented options. Philly’s offense should fly in 2020 and I’m tempted to take the over here but I am just a little too skeptical about the targets. I will reluctantly go under.
Prediction: Under 650.5
Kenny Golladay
Golladay saw his numbers improve again in his third NFL season. He came up just short of 1200 yards and led the NFL with 11 touchdown catches, despite playing half the season without his starting quarterback Matt Stafford.
A physical specimen, Golladay isn’t done getting better. He went nearly 100 yards over this total without a sufficient QB for half the season. There’s only one way to bet this one.
Prediction: Over 1100.5
Justin Jefferson
The Vikings received the 22nd pick in the draft as part of the return package for Stefon Diggs and used it to take Diggs’ replacement, Justin Jefferson.
Jefferson was dominant a season ago at LSU and will have some bulletin board material after being taken behind some guys who didn’t put up nearly the numbers he did at the receiver position in 2019.
He slots right in across Adam Thielen in Minnesota’s offense, which isn’t exactly the most dynamic in the league but also on a secure foundation with a good offensive line and Captain Kirk Cousins leading the huddle. So Jefferson is at least one rookie I’m over on.
Prediction: Over 675.5
