Bettors with a particularly strong feel for a certain individual can get a head start (and perhaps added value) by locking in their bets well before training camps open.
Last season, Michael Thomas of the Saints led the rest of the league by a healthy margin with over 1700 receiving yards. No one else even reached 1400.
Thomas’ total leads a list of 44 different wide receivers and tight ends in 2020. CappersPicks will cover each one and make a call on whether to go over or under in a multi-part series.
Michael Gallup
Gallup got over 1100 yards in just 14 games last season, which was his second as a professional. He should continue to get even better in 2020 and beyond.
Not only will his timing and comfortability improve with Dak Prescott, the Cowboys also brought in another talented wide receiver in CeeDee Lamb, whose job it will be to attract defensive attention over the middle.
Apparently the oddsmakers believe Lamb will take targets away from Gallup. Even if that is true, I tend to believe it will lead to more big plays over the top for Gallup and even more yards this season.
Prediction: Over 900.5
Zach Ertz
Ertz has been doing it for seven seasons now. He’s been over 800 yards for five straight seasons and has scored 22 touchdowns in his last three, with an 1100-yard season in there too.
It sure looks like 2018 was his finest hour, however. He still caught 88 balls for over 900 yards last season but he missed a game due to injury and was banged up enough in some of the others that Dallas Goedert carved out a little more of the offense for himself.
The Eagles spent a high draft choice on a wide receiver and have Goedert still, who is pushing Ertz for tight end targets. If he slips a little further on this season, it will be an under.
Prediction: Under 850.5
Deebo Samuel
Samuel went for over 800 yards in his rookie season with the 49ers. Partially as a result, the Niners parted ways with Emmanuel Sanders in the offseason and the way is no paved for Samuel to be the go-to guy on the outside.
A lot of these young guys on the board have totals that you would expect them to fly over with just the slightest step forward as a second or third year player. Samuel is included among them.
It’s assumed a young player will improve on the year prior but it doesn’t always work out that way. Tempting as the over is, the second season could be more difficult than the first for this young man, who has a lot of pressure on him for a team expected to contend to get back to the Super Bowl.
Prediction: Under 900.5
(NOTE: Breaking News today…The San Francisco 49ers might be without Samuel for a while. He suffered a broken foot in Nashville and is scheduled to undergo surgery today, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.)
Marvin Jones
Jones was on pace to finish right around 1000 yards for the second time in his career in 2019 before an ankle injury ended his season three games early.
Keep in mind that he was without Matt Stafford for many of those games. Stafford will be back in 2020 and Detroit has done what it can to fortify the offensive line, which has been poor of late.
Jones is also in a contract year and has to believe he has one more decent deal in him at age 30. I like him as a steady presence in the pass game and think he may have a 1000-yard season left in him.
Prediction: Over 875.5
