2023 NFC South Division Gambling Analysis
Big changes in the NFC South for 2023. Carolina’s got new coach Frank Reich, Tampa Bay’s got new OC Dave Canales (ex-Seahawks), Atlanta hired DC Ryan Nielsen from New Orleans, and the Saints now have Al Woods running defense.
Get ready for an exciting season! (We hope)
Saints
The New Orleans Saints had a 7-10 record in 2022, bidding farewell to Andy Dalton. Now, the big question mark revolves around Alvin Kamara. Unfortunately, he’s facing a trial on July 31 for conspiracy to commit battery, which isn’t good news. Another concern is the health of Michael Thomas in time for the upcoming NFL season.
Dennis Allen and Derek Carr are back together, but they haven’t achieved much as a duo so far. Will things be any different in 2023? Only time will tell. Carr is a quarterback who knows how to win and brings a strong presence to the locker room, which is crucial for a leader. From that perspective, the Saints have upgraded at the quarterback position. Surprisingly, Winston chose to stay in Nawlins and back up Carr.
On the defensive side, the Saints were among the top 10 teams in 2022, and the additions of Foskey, Bresee, and Saunders will only enhance their strength.
All things considered, I can see the Saints reaching 10 or 11 wins this season. The win total projection for the New Orleans Saints in 2023 stands at 9.5, and they have one of the easiest schedules, which works in their favor.
Buccaneers
The Bucs, have been dominating their division for the past two years with Tom Brady leading the way. However, things are about to change in the NFC South. This season, the competition is wide open. The Bucs have made some additions to their roster, but will players like Diaby, Mauch, Kancey, Neal, Edmonds, and Gaines be enough to push them in the right direction?
Personally, I have doubts about both their defensive line and offensive line. They struggled against the Cowboys in the playoffs, which ultimately led to Tom Brady’s departure. Now, we’re left wondering if the upcoming Kyle Trask show will excite us all. Can Baker Mayfield be the answer? The Bucs do have an advantage with the 11th easiest schedule, but even that might only lead them to 6-7 wins at best.
It’s highly probable that the Bucs could go from being at the top to the bottom of their division. They can’t afford to make many mistakes this season.
Panthers
7-10 in 2022. Things have to go better this year right? I like the Panthers front office decision to bring in Frank Reich. Full. Stop. This could be the top head-coaching hire among those we’ve seen during this offseason. Reich has a remarkable ability to develop and coach quarterbacks. Bryce Young gets to see this up close and personal now. He’ll be backed up by Andy (Still in the league) Dalton. Hey, you could do worse to surround a youngster than a crusty old vet in Andy.
At running back I like the triple headed monster in 2023 with new to the team Miles Sanders, Hubbard, and Blackshear. The Panthers have given Young some weapons, but they’re all mostly unproven, so seeing how they take shape in the preseason will be interesting. Chark, Marshall Jr, Shenault Jr., Shi Smith will compete for playing time. They will also team up Young with an exciting rookie receiver, Jonathan Mingo.
With a young but talented defense, they are on the verge of being playoff-ready, and perhaps they are already there, especially when the entire group is fully healthy. Carolina has evolved into a more well-rounded team compared to last year.
Young needs to adapt to the NFL now, and the quicker he does it, the better the fortunes of the Cats will be.
Falcons
The Falcons 2023 coaching staff is set Arthur Smith, Dave Ragone (OC) and Ryan Nielsen (DC) form the nucleus and brain trust. They’ll be in charge of bringing the Falcons back from a division worst 7-10 record in 2022. They have to fix that 1-7 road record.
For the Falcons this has been an interesting offseason. The focus was enhancing their D and bolstering the supporting cast around Desmond Ridder.
Did they accomplish this? For starters…I love Bijan Robinson. He’s a workhorse back that this offense needed. Throw in the complimentary pieces like Allgeier, Hollins, Jonnu Smith, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts, and there’s some nice pieces for sure. I almost forgot Cordarrelle Patterson. The Swiss-Army knife of the NFL. The Falcons also beefed up their O-line so things are looking up.
On D I’m happy the Falcons brought in Dupree, Campbell, Onyemata, and Bates III. They’ll all plug and play nicely in Hotlanta.
Last thing, they have the NFL’s easiest schedule…(On paper)
