2023 NFC North Division Gambling Analysis
NFC North is changing in 2023. Can Jordan Love lead the Packers? Are the Lions overhyped? Can Justin Fields and the Bears shine? What’s next for the Vikings? Let’s find out!
Bears
3-14 in 2022 coach Matt Eberflus and GM Ryan Poles have had their work cut out for them this offseason. Some positive though are that the Bears don’t have one of the toughest schedules in 2023 so that alone should pave the way for another win or two. Things still have to go according to plan in Chicago of course, and Justin Fields needs to take that next step on the NFL quarterbacking ladder.
The Bears have given Fields some weapons in 2023 to be successful not only running up and down the field but in the pocket as well. WR DJ Moore can be one of the best, but you have to get him the ball (a lot), in Carolina there were games where he wasn’t a factor. That can’t happen in Chi-town. Claypool also returns, as does St. Brown, Pettis, Kmet, and Tonyan should bolster the TE room too.
The Bears run-game will be interesting though this year. Not sure how they’ll utilize all their backs, or how the depth chart will shake down at this point. But we’ll see Foreman, Herbert, Travis Homer, and rookie 115th pick Roschon Johnson trying to contribute.
The Chicago defense had a rough go last season, ranking dead last in points allowed. But fear not, my friends, because they’ve made some key additions to bolster their ranks. Veterans like T.J. Edwards, Edmunds, Billings, and Walker, along with rookie Dexter Sr. and Tyrique Stevenson, are incoming. With these reinforcements, the defense should definitely show improvement this year.
I’m not sure I see a playoff run in this team yet, but they’ll be close, IF Fields takes a bigger step forward with his QB skillset.
Packers
The Aaron Rodgers era has come to an end. After spending his first three years in the NFL as Brett Favre’s backup, Rodgers took over as the starting quarterback for the Packers in 2008. Yes, I said 2008. 15+ years in Green & Yellow. It’s going to be weird seeing another QB in there isn’t it?
True to their nature, the Packers maintained their silence during FA. However, they made their mark in the 2023 NFL draft by selecting an impressive 13 players. Among them was the first-round LB, Lukas Van Ness. Additionally, they added 3x WR’s and 2x TE’s to their 2023 roster. They also reached for Auburn kicker Anders Carlson.
Jordan Love is a young and talented quarterback, drafted by the Packers in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, and he has been watching and learning under Rodgers. The sky is the limit. There is much anticipation surrounding Love’s future, the team and fans eagerly await the opportunity to see him in action, and it won’t be long now.
Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs are entering their second year in the league, still relatively young. On top of that, we have some fresh faces in the mix. Rookies like Jayden Reed, Luke Musgrave, and Tucker Kraft will be called upon to make significant contributions, possibly even stepping into starting roles.
I can see the Packers getting some nice wins early in the season, Lambeau after all is still a pretty tough place for an opposing team to come in and grab a W, but I’m not sure I see the Packers being too relevant later in the season. They’ll likely miss the playoffs.
Lions
The Detroit Lions are the hot pick to win the NFC North this year. They’re fully behind their head coach, Dan Campbell, and have surrounded Jared Goff with some offensive weapons like rookie RB Jahmyr Gibbs, Montgomery, LaPorta, Reynolds, Jones Jr, and the Sun God (St. Brown). Things are looking up in DTown!
What sets Detroit apart is their impressive presence in the trenches. Their defensive line is ready to level up, keeping their strong starters from last year. Aidan Hutchinson is a beast, and their upgrades in pass defense with Gardner-Johnson, Branch, Moseley, and Sutton will make a huge impact.
Their O-line, ranked #8 in 2022 by PFF, is expected to be even better this year. The Lions have a thrilling start to the season with tough matchups against the Champs and the Seahawks at home. They even have four prime-time games to showcase their skills.
I believe the Lions will make the playoffs this year. After a solid season in 2022, they finished with a winning record and showed their prowess by winning eight of their last ten games.
The Lions are ready to roar back to glory!
Vikings
With a strong 13-4 record last season, will the Minnesota Vikings be able to secure a minimum of 9 wins this time? I’m just not sure. The Lions and the Bears are both looking like they’re up and coming. Minnesota could be due for a step back.
Joining an exclusive club is no easy feat, and only four quarterbacks in NFL history have managed to defeat all 32 teams in the league. This year, Kirk Cousins has a chance to become part of that elite group by securing wins against the formidable Chiefs and Bengals.
I’m not sold on the D. The team’s success will heavily rely on the growth of several guys, namely. LB Brian Asamoah, as well as CB’s Booth and Evans, who will have to play integral roles in determining how far they can go. It’s all about how well these young talents adjust to the speed of the NFL game.
The Vikings have an over/under total of 8.5 wins, indicating that the market sees them teetering on the edge of playoff contention in the NFC, but I’m just not sold on this roster right now.
How long will Dalvin be happy? Is Jordan Addison really a #2 WR? I have major questions about their secondary holding up versus the WR’s in the NFC North, but I guess fantasy players will be happy as I envision a few shootouts this year for Minni. Remember the wild-card loss to the Giants? (Expect more of those games)
It’s quite unusual for an NFL team to achieve a winning record despite having a negative point differential, and the Vikings accomplished just that with their 13-4 mark last season. Minnesota is facing a tougher schedule in 2023, and they have challenging matchups against the AFC West, the Eagles, and the Bengals. I smell regression.
