2023 NFC East Division Gambling Analysis
My how times have changed. Just a couple years ago the NFC East was the worst division in football. Now we have a Eagles team coming off a 14-3 season. The Cowboys were 12-5, the Giants were 9-7-1, and the Commanders were 8-8-1.
In 2022, the NFC East had an impressive record of 43-23-2, which was five wins more than any other division. The AFC North, for comparison, secured 38 wins.
Washington Commanders
Obviously the Commanders are the worst team in the division, but they did go .500 in 2022, so to say they have no shot at the playoffs in 2023 would be very very wrong of me. In 2023 they’ll be led by Sam Howell and HC Eric Bieniemy.
Sam Howell needs to ignite the Commanders right from the start, as the second half of the season won’t be a walk in the park. If he faulters at least the Commanders have Jacoby Brissett in the fold. Can an offensive line with only one starter coming back really take this team to another level? Is Antonio Gibson really the answer at RB? In the skill positions I do like what the Commanders have in Dotson, McLaurin, Robinson, and Samuel. You could do a lot worse.
On the defensive side the Commanders are one of the top units in football. The team can expect a healthier Chase Young to make even more noise in 2023 now that he’s healthy. Plus, with Payne the D was a top unit in some key areas. I like Allen, & Sweat in the mix on this D too. They were 7th in points allowed, 3rd in yards allowed, 8th in DEF. Red Zone TD rate, and they were first in DEF. 3rd down conversion rate.
The Commanders’ final eight games are against formidable playoff contenders, leaving little room for error. With the 8th toughest schedule in the NFL I’m not sure we’re looking at a playoff team.
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles are the best team in the NFC east. Full. Stop. They’re coming off a Super Bowl appearance and confidence is high. I repeat. Confidence is high. The Eagles’ roster is also undeniably impressive. Their strength in the trenches is remarkable, complemented by fantastic skill position players. Furthermore, they possess a quarterback with MVP-level talent. It’s clear to see that the Eagles have assembled a formidable team.
Prepare to witness another spectacular season from the defense that tallied a remarkable 70 sacks in 2022. The Phili D secured 2nd in yards allowed and they were also 8th in points allowed. By keeping their DB’s (Slay – 2yr. extension) in tact I suspect we’ll see the Eagles D poised to shine even brighter this year.
On the offensive side, Jalen Hurts, along with an arsenal of weapons including Brown, Smith, and Goedert are elite. The Eagles’ offense is loaded with playmakers who will undoubtedly make their mark on the field. Yes, the run-game will look different in 2023. Gone is Miles Sanders, in is Lions castoff D’Andre Swift. Backing him up will be Gainwell, and ex Seahawk top pick Penny. Scott is still in the conversation too. Ground and pound.
I can see the Eagles coming up with 11 or 12 wins by the end of the season. They’re that good. At the same time however, they could end up with 9 or 10 and I wouldn’t be shocked. The NFC East is tough.
Dallas Cowboys
As stated the Cowboys finished 2022 12-5. A great season, something to be proud of if you’re in Jerry World. They’re looking to make the playoffs for the third straight year. In the wild-card round, the Cowboys triumphed over the Bucs, marking their first road playoff victory since their Super Bowl-winning season back in 1992. Not only that, but they also ended their losing streak against the legendary Tom Brady, who played his final game of his career in that match.
Unfortunately, their journey came to an end in the divisional round when they faced off against the 49ers for the second year in a row and were defeated.
Now in come some different players on offense. OUT are Anthony Brown and Noah, in are Brandin Cooks, and Stephen Gilmore. The possibility of Elliott returning to the Cowboys is still on the table, but according to a reliable team insider, a reunion is considered highly unlikely. Tony Pollard is banged up, Ronald Jones the KC castoff is in the RB room now, there’s also Deuce Vaughn a 6th round pick in 2023, and Malik Davis who did a few good things on the field as a rookie in 22. For me the run game is a big question mark.
Did they do enough with their roster to take a bigger step in 23? Time will tell. One thing I am looking forward to is the Rodgers vs. McCarthy matchup in Week 2. Should be fun.
IN 2023 I’m expecting we could again see the NFC East reign supreme, proving their dominance on the gridiron as the best division in football.
New York Giants
I’m going to go out on a limb and say this. For the Giants to make the playoffs they need to beat the Cowboys. Since his rookie season, Dak Prescott has remained undefeated against the Giants, securing 10 consecutive victories. This can change…it must change. The Giants need to get some wins against Dallas.
Another team they need to get out of their heads is the Eagles. The Giants have marked Christmas Day on their calendar. They have a chance for redemption against the Eagles, who defeated them by a whopping 31 points in the playoffs and won all three of their head-to-head matchups last season.
Brian Daboll has this team going in the right direction and I like what they’re building, but to get back to the playoffs in the NFC won’t be easy. The Giants have a myriad of weaponry in house now for Daniel Jones to play with. Waller, rookie Hyatt, Crowder, and Parris Campbell are all in the fold. But, we all know how Barkley goes is how the Giants go. They need him to stay on the field.
I really like the Giants defense. Don Martindale is spinning a masterful web. He has some great pieces to build around too. Deonte Banks, Pinnock, Adoree’ Jackson, and Thibodeaux are all solid. Now just stop the RUN! (31st in 2022)
The Giants have the 3rd toughest schedule in the NFL with 7 road games in their first 11 matchups of the 2023 season. If they can run that gauntlet they’ll be fine, if not, expect a fairly high draft pick.
