The first Chase race is behind us. Now the Cup Series heads to Madison, Illinois, where all 16 Chase drivers remain alive under NASCAR’s new championship format.
Nobody gets eliminated Sunday.
That doesn’t make this race any less important. With only 10 races deciding the championship, giving away points at Gateway isn’t something these teams want to do.

NASCAR Handicapping
Gateway hasn’t been on the Cup schedule very long. The Enjoy Illinois 300 debuted in 2022, so we’ve only got four races here to work with.
That’s not much history.
What we do have tells us plenty about the type of drivers who can win here. Joey Logano, Kyle Busch, Austin Cindric, and Denny Hamlin have taken the first four Cup races at Gateway, and Hamlin comes back this week after winning here last season.
This is another shorter, flatter track where I put plenty of weight on braking, getting through the corners cleanly, and what a car can do over a longer run.
Track position matters too.
Last year’s race showed how quickly pit strategy can change everything. Hamlin and Chase Briscoe pitted early during a green-flag cycle late in the race, got the break they needed, and ended up finishing 1-2.
Gateway hasn’t given us much history yet, but four races is enough to know you better bring a car that works on the shorter flat tracks.
Enjoy Illinois 300 Betting Strategy & NASCAR Edge
I’m leaning pretty heavily on shorter-flat-track form this week. Gateway has its own quirks, but guys who regularly run well on this type of track keep showing up near the top of the board.
Christopher Bell fits that profile.
So do Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney, which helps explain why all three are sitting between +450 and +460. There’s not much separating the sportsbooks’ top three choices.
That doesn’t mean I’m stopping there.
Joey Logano has already won at Gateway and has a habit of showing up once the Chase starts. Ryan Preece is the big number on my card because he’s been better on shorter flat tracks than the +6000 price suggests.
There are other ways to play this race too.
Top-5s, Top-10s and driver matchups may give us better numbers once practice and qualifying are in the books. I’m not going to force every driver I like into an outright bet.
Why the Enjoy Illinois 300 Creates Betting Value
Four Cup races at Gateway have produced four different winners. We’ve seen Team Penske win twice, Joe Gibbs Racing take last year’s race, and Richard Childress Racing win with Kyle Busch in 2023.
Nobody owns this place yet.
Hamlin has finished first, second, and second in his last three Gateway starts. Bell has also been consistently strong here, while Blaney has put together some of the best shorter-flat-track results in NASCAR this season.
Those three deserve to be favorites.
The interesting part comes when we move farther down the board. Logano is +700 despite winning the first Cup race held here, while Preece is all the way out at +6000.
I don’t need to beat the favorites just for the sake of beating them. I need the price to make sense.
That’s how I’m approaching Gateway.
Why This Race Is Different
The 2026 Chase changes the way we look at this race. Under the new format, all 16 Chase drivers remain championship eligible throughout the 10-race postseason.
There isn’t a Round of 12 cutoff waiting after Gateway.
That doesn’t mean teams can cruise around collecting safe finishes. Every race matters, and a bad Sunday still costs points that have to be made up later.
Strategy can turn this place upside down too.
We saw it last year when Hamlin and Briscoe came down pit road early during the late green-flag cycle. Hamlin eventually got around Brad Keselowski after the restart and never gave the lead back.
- Shorter-flat-track form matters.
- Track position matters.
- Green-flag pit timing can change the race.
- Chase points matter from start to finish.
Last Year at Gateway
Denny Hamlin started from the pole and finished the job, winning the 2025 Enjoy Illinois 300 by 1.620 seconds over Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Chase Briscoe.
It was Hamlin’s fifth victory of the season and the 59th of his Cup career.
The race really turned with about 65 laps remaining. Hamlin and Briscoe chose to pit early during a green-flag pit cycle after Ty Dillon made contact with the outside wall, while several other drivers tried to stretch their run.
That call worked.
Hamlin passed Brad Keselowski for the lead after the restart and never gave it back. Briscoe had an issue with the left-rear tire on pit road but still recovered well enough to finish second.
Chase Elliott finished third, Ryan Blaney fourth, and Joey Logano fifth.
Bell spent much of the afternoon inside the top 10 and finished seventh, while Bubba Wallace won Stage 2 before coming home eighth. Blaney’s fourth-place result was especially impressive after Kyle Larson spun him on Lap 135.
Past Winners – Enjoy Illinois 300
We’re not dealing with a 20-year history book this week. Gateway joined the Cup schedule in 2022, and we’ve had four races and four different winners.
Team Penske already has two of them.

- 2024 — Austin Cindric (Team Penske)
- 2023 — Kyle Busch (Richard Childress Racing)
- 2022 — Joey Logano (Team Penske)
Hamlin is the defending winner, Logano has already won here, and Cindric gives Penske another former Gateway winner in the field.
That’s a pretty good place to start before we get into this week’s odds.

Christopher Bell opens as a slight +450 favorite, with Denny Hamlin and Ryan Blaney right behind him at +460. That’s basically a three-driver top tier before we get to Joey Logano at +700 and Kyle Larson at +850.
The board gets more interesting after that.

Enjoy Illinois 300 Free Picks
Gateway gives us three favorites I have no problem backing. Bell, Hamlin, and Blaney have all been excellent on the shorter flat tracks, and Hamlin’s recent record here speaks for itself.
I’m also going back to Logano at +700.
Then we’ve got Ryan Preece at +6000 as the big swing. He isn’t going to get the attention the favorites do, but his shorter-flat-track numbers make him worth a look at that price.
My 2026 NASCAR Enjoy Illinois 300 Race Prediction comes down to five drivers.
Here are my outright plays for Sunday at Gateway.
2026 NASCAR Enjoy Illinois 300 Race Odds: Christopher Bell +450
Christopher Bell gets the first ticket this week. He’s been one of NASCAR’s best drivers on the shorter flat tracks, and Gateway has treated him pretty well too.
Bell has the second-best average finish among this field at Gateway.
He’s also finished inside the top seven in four of five races on this track type in 2026. That’s the kind of consistency I want when I’m laying a short +450 price on an outright winner.
I don’t love betting NASCAR favorites at these numbers, but sometimes the chalk is there for a reason.
Our 2026 NASCAR Enjoy Illinois 300 Race Prediction starts with Bell. If the No. 20 has the long-run speed on Saturday, he’ll be one of the guys to beat Sunday.
2026 NASCAR Enjoy Illinois 300 Race Odds: Denny Hamlin +460
Denny Hamlin is about as easy to put on the card as Bell.
Look at his last three Gateway finishes: first, second, second.
That’s damn good.
Hamlin won here last season after starting from the pole, and he knows exactly what it takes to get around this place. He also owns the best average finish at Gateway among this week’s field.
At +460, we’re not getting much of a bargain.
I’m still willing to pay the price. Three straight top-two finishes at the same track is enough for me to keep Hamlin on the card until somebody proves he doesn’t belong there.
2026 NASCAR Enjoy Illinois 300 Race Odds: Ryan Blaney +460
Ryan Blaney gives us the third member of that +450/+460 group at the top.
He’s already won twice on shorter flat tracks this season and has been one of the most consistent drivers on this type of layout. Bell, Hamlin, and Blaney have basically separated themselves from the rest of the board coming into Gateway.
Blaney also finished fourth here last year.
That result was better than it looks because Kyle Larson spun him on Lap 135. Blaney recovered, worked his way back through the field, and still ended the afternoon inside the top five.
That’s enough for me.
The price is short, but Blaney’s 2026 form on these tracks puts him right there with Bell and Hamlin.
NASCAR Odds: Joey Logano +700
Joey Logano at +700 is where the board finally gives us a little more room.
He won the first Cup race ever held at Gateway in 2022 and finished fifth here last season. More importantly, we’ve watched Logano turn it up plenty of times once the championship portion of the schedule begins.
He knows how to race this place.
Logano doesn’t need to have the fastest car for 300 miles either. Keep the No. 22 near the front, give him track position late, and he’s one of the last guys I want to see sitting there with a shot at the win.
+700 works for me.
NASCAR Odds: Ryan Preece +6000
Ryan Preece is the fun one.
He’s sitting at +6000, but his work on shorter flat tracks has been better than that number suggests. Last year at Gateway, Preece started way back in 32nd and drove up to finish 13th.
No, I’m not pretending a 13th-place finish screams outright winner.
But moving forward 19 spots gets my attention.
Preece has quietly become one of the guys I look at when NASCAR hits this type of track. At +6000, I don’t need a big bet to make the ticket worthwhile.
He’s my longshot for Sunday.
Best Mid-Tier NASCAR Bets at Gateway
Kyle Larson is +850, but I’m more interested in what happens once we get into double-digit prices.
Chase Briscoe at +1100 deserves a look after finishing second here last year. He won the opening stage and was right there with Hamlin late before the left-rear tire issue on pit road hurt his chances.
Tyler Reddick follows at +1200, with Ty Gibbs at +1400.
Then we’ve got William Byron +1700 and Austin Cindric +1800. Cindric already has a Gateway victory on his résumé after winning here in 2024, so that number is going to get some attention.
Chase Elliott at +2000 isn’t easy to dismiss either.
He finished third here last season and gives us another proven driver at a much better price than the favorites.
Longshot Drivers Worth a Smaller Look
Once we get beyond +3000, I’m not looking for five outright bets just because the prices look good.
Ryan Preece at +6000 is my guy from this range.
Brad Keselowski starts the deeper group at +4500, followed by Ross Chastain +5000. Chris Buescher and Carson Hocevar are both +5500 before we get to Preece.
There are some interesting names there.
A +6000 ticket doesn’t have to win very often. It just has to win often enough to make the price worth taking.
Alex Bowman is +7500, while Michael McDowell, Daniel Suarez, and Erik Jones are all +8000. I’d rather look at Top-10s or matchups on most of those guys than start firing outright tickets all over the board.
Preece is the exception for me this week.
How Bettors Should Attack the Enjoy Illinois 300
The outright board gets most of the attention, but Gateway gives us plenty of other ways to bet Sunday.
Top-5 and Top-10 markets should be in play.
Driver matchups could be even better once we’ve seen practice and qualifying. If one driver is holding his speed over a longer run while the guy across from him starts falling off after 10 or 15 laps, that’s something I want to attack.
Live betting can come into play too.
Last year’s race is a perfect example. Pit timing helped put Hamlin and Briscoe in position late, and one strategy call can completely change what the running order looks like.
Don’t panic if a driver you like loses track position early.
If the car is still fast, there may be a better number waiting for you during the race.
Gateway can turn on one pit call, so don’t judge a driver’s day by where he’s running with 100 laps left.
Practice & Qualifying Could Change Everything
I’m watching the longer runs again this week.
One fast lap in practice is nice. Show me who can still run good laps after the tires have 20 or 30 laps on them.
That’s more useful.
Qualifying matters because nobody wants to spend Sunday fighting through traffic if they don’t have to. Hamlin started on the pole last year and eventually won the race.
I’ll also be watching Bell, Blaney, and Logano closely.
If one of those guys looks noticeably better than the others over a longer run, it could be enough to break up that tight group at the top of the betting board.
The odds will move.
That’s why I’ll wait until practice and qualifying before adding anything beyond the five outright plays already on my card.
