Bills vs. Texans Gameday
Week 1 of the 2026 NFL regular season sends the Buffalo Bills to Reliant Stadium for a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Houston Texans. The game kicks off at 1:00 PM ET on CBS, with both AFC contenders looking to make an early statement.
Buffalo begins a new chapter with Joe Brady taking over as head coach after two seasons running the offense. The Bills went 12-5 last season and finished the preseason 3-0, including a 28-27 win over Pittsburgh in their finale. Josh Allen remains the centerpiece, while offseason additions DJ Moore and Bradley Chubb give Buffalo some new pieces on both sides of the ball.
Houston’s defense gives Buffalo an immediate Week 1 test after dominating this matchup last November.
DeMeco Ryans returns for his fourth season in Houston after guiding the Texans to a 12-5 record and another playoff appearance. Houston went 0-3 in the preseason, but there is little reason to read too much into those August results.
The Texans beat Buffalo 23-19 last November, sacking Allen eight times in the process.
Week 1 gives Buffalo a chance to answer that result immediately, while Houston gets the benefit of opening at home. There is enough talent on both sides to make this one of the more interesting early games on Sunday’s schedule.

Buffalo Bills vs. Houston Texans Odds & Last 5
The betting market has this game close to a toss-up, with Buffalo sitting as a 1.5-point road favorite. Houston gets +1.5 at home, while the total is set at 44.5 points.
Houston has won the last two regular-season meetings with Buffalo. The most recent came on November 20, 2025, when the Texans held off the Bills 23-19 in Houston. Buffalo’s offense never reached the end zone through the air, and Allen was sacked a career-high eight times.
That defensive performance is difficult to ignore heading into the rematch.
Buffalo finished its 2026 preseason unbeaten, beating Carolina 29-14, Cleveland 31-7 and Pittsburgh 28-27. The Bills scored at least 28 points in all three games, although preseason production has to be kept in perspective.
Houston had the opposite August, losing all three preseason games. The Texans fell 27-7 to the Chargers, 22-20 to Las Vegas and 16-13 at Carolina, but their established defensive core remains the bigger handicapping factor entering Week 1.
Texans Stats From Last Season
The Houston Texans enter 2026 looking to build on a 12-5 season that produced another trip to the playoffs. Their biggest strength was obvious: Houston allowed only 17.4 points per game, second-best in the NFL, while leading the league at 277.2 total yards allowed per game.
The defense was strong at every level. Houston surrendered only 183.5 passing yards and 93.7 rushing yards per game, while Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter helped a pass rush finish with 47 sacks. The Texans also forced 29 turnovers.
That unit gives Houston a legitimate foundation against Buffalo.
Offensively, the Texans were more ordinary, finishing 13th with 23.8 points per game. C.J. Stroud started 14 games and threw for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Houston still found a way to win 12 games before beating Pittsburgh 30-6 in the Wild Card round and losing 28-16 at New England.
The offense has undergone some changes around Stroud entering 2026. Houston acquired running back David Montgomery, added Kayshon Boutte late in August and still has Nico Collins as its top receiving threat.
Houston’s 0-3 preseason did not resemble last year’s regular-season success. For this opener, the Texans will be counting on their defense to pressure Allen again while Stroud tries to do enough against a Buffalo defense that had its own strengths in 2025.

Bills Stats From Last Season
Buffalo enters the 2026 season after going 12-5 last year and producing another top-five offense. The Bills scored 28.3 points per game, fourth in the NFL, and piled up 6,397 total offensive yards.
The running game was the headliner. Buffalo led the league with 2,714 rushing yards and 30 rushing touchdowns, with James Cook III accounting for 1,621 yards on the ground. That balance made the Bills difficult to defend even when opponents limited Allen through the air.
Buffalo was also much better against the pass than the run defensively.
The Bills allowed 21.5 points per game and surrendered an NFL-low 156.9 passing yards per contest. Opponents had considerably more success on the ground, averaging 136.2 rushing yards against Buffalo. That contrast gives Houston an obvious area to test in the opener.
Buffalo’s perfect preseason provided a clean start under Brady.
The roster around Allen has changed, though, with DJ Moore joining a receiving group that also includes Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman and Joshua Palmer. Pete Carmichael takes over as offensive coordinator, while Jim Leonhard is now running the defense. Bradley Chubb also joins Greg Rousseau on the edge, giving Leonhard another proven pass-rushing option.

Bills vs. Texans QB Matchup
Josh Allen remains the unquestioned starter for Buffalo after another productive 2025 season. He completed 69.3% of his passes for 3,668 yards, 25 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while starting all 17 games. Allen also finished with a 102.2 passer rating.
Those numbers only tell part of the story with Allen because his legs remain a major piece of Buffalo’s offense. Houston showed last November that pressure can disrupt him, recording eight sacks and intercepting him twice in the 23-19 Texans victory.
That rematch gives Allen something tangible to answer in Week 1.
C.J. Stroud returns on the other side after starting 14 games for Houston last season. He completed 64.5% of his throws for 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. The Texans went 9-5 in his regular-season starts.
Stroud does not need to match Allen play for play if Houston’s defense controls the game. He does need to avoid giving Buffalo short fields and make enough throws to Collins and the rest of a reshaped receiving group.
Buffalo Bills vs. Houston Texans bottom line: Buffalo brings the stronger offensive profile, while Houston counters with an elite defense that already gave Allen major problems last season.
Buffalo Bills vs. Houston Texans Football Betting Trends

- Buffalo is also 3-0 straight up in their last 3 regular season away games.
- Additionally, the Bills have a 4-1 over/under record in their last 5 regular season games as favorites.

Bills Texans Free Pick: UNDER 44.5
Here is my Bills Texans free pick:
I’m playing the Under 44.5 on Sunday afternoon in Houston. Buffalo still has Josh Allen and plenty of ways to score, but this matchup starts with a Texans defense that allowed only 17.4 points and an NFL-low 277.2 yards per game last season. Houston also sacked Allen eight times in its 23-19 win over Buffalo last November.
That matters more to me than Buffalo’s perfect preseason.
The Bills were excellent offensively in 2025, averaging 28.3 points, but Joe Brady is now the head coach and Pete Carmichael takes over as offensive coordinator. Still, Week 1 on the road against Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter and this Houston front is not where I want to assume Buffalo immediately hits its ceiling.
On the other side, Houston has questions of its own on offense. C.J. Stroud threw 19 touchdowns in 14 games last season, and the Texans finished only 13th in scoring despite going 12-5.
Buffalo’s defense also gave up just 156.9 passing yards per game last year. That gives the Bills a legitimate way to keep Stroud from turning this into a shootout.
Houston’s defense can drag games into the mud, while Buffalo has enough defensive strength to answer. I’ll take the Under 44.5.
