Browns vs. Jaguars Gameday
The 2026 NFL season opens with the Cleveland Browns traveling to EverBank Stadium to face the Jacksonville Jaguars. The game is set for Sunday, September 13 at 1:00 PM ET on CBS, with Jacksonville opening at home after a 13-4 season.
Cleveland begins a new era under head coach Todd Monken after finishing 5-12 last season. Travis Switzer is running the offense, while Mike Rutenberg takes over a defense that was one of Cleveland’s strengths in 2025.
Jacksonville enters Week 1 with considerably more continuity after winning the AFC South last season.
The Jaguars bring back Liam Coen for his second season after one of the biggest turnarounds in football. Jacksonville also returns offensive coordinator Grant Udinski and defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile after both units finished among the league’s better groups last year.
Both teams finished the preseason on a winning note.
Cleveland went 1-2 but closed with a 37-13 victory over New England, while Jacksonville finished 2-1 after shutting out Tampa Bay 19-0. The preseason results only carry so much weight, but both teams at least enter Week 1 coming off encouraging finales.

Cleveland Browns vs. Jacksonville Jaguars Odds & Last 5
Jacksonville enters Week 1 as a sizable home favorite, with the Jaguars laying 8.5 points and sitting around -400 on the moneyline. Cleveland is +8.5 with a moneyline around +320, while the total is set at 40.5 points.
The Browns have won the last two regular-season meetings between these teams. Cleveland earned an 18-13 road victory on September 15, 2024 after beating Jacksonville 31-27 at home the previous season.
Those results came against very different versions of these teams.
Cleveland finished the 2026 preseason 1-2, losing 34-10 at Chicago and 31-7 against Buffalo before beating New England 37-13. Dillon Gabriel threw for 186 yards and three touchdowns in the finale, although he has since been placed on injured reserve with a designation to return.
Jacksonville went 2-1 during the preseason and saved its most convincing result for last. The Jaguars blanked Tampa Bay 19-0, holding the Buccaneers to only 87 total yards while Bryan Thomas Jr. recorded 2.5 sacks.
Jaguars Stats From Last Season
Jacksonville enters 2026 after going 13-4 and winning the AFC South in Liam Coen’s first season. The Jaguars averaged a franchise-record 27.9 points per game, ranking sixth in the NFL, while scoring 474 points and 55 touchdowns.
Trevor Lawrence was at the center of that improvement. He started all 17 games and threw for 4,007 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, then added nine rushing touchdowns to give him 38 total scores.
The defense gave Jacksonville another legitimate strength.
The Jaguars allowed 19.8 points per game, ranking eighth, and led the NFL by surrendering only 85.6 rushing yards per contest. Campanile’s defense also produced 31 takeaways and 22 interceptions, giving Jacksonville a +13 turnover differential.
That combination helped turn a four-win team in 2024 into a 13-win division champion.
Jacksonville finished the preseason 2-1, with victories over New Orleans and Tampa Bay surrounding a loss to Carolina. The Jaguars rested their starters in the 19-0 preseason finale, but their defensive depth overwhelmed Tampa Bay throughout the night.
The offensive line does have some early-season attrition. Sam Mustipher is on injured reserve, while Patrick Mekari was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return. Jacksonville still enters the opener with Lawrence, Jakobi Meyers and Brian Thomas Jr. on the active roster.

Browns Stats From Last Season
Cleveland enters 2026 trying to rebound from a 5-12 season in which the offense consistently struggled to generate points. The Browns averaged only 16.4 points per game, ranking 31st in the NFL, and finished near the bottom of the league in both passing and rushing production.
The defense gave Cleveland considerably more to work with. The Browns allowed the fourth-fewest total yards per game and the third-fewest passing yards, helping keep them competitive despite the offensive problems.
The pass rush was another legitimate strength.
Myles Garrett produced an NFL-record 23 sacks, while Cleveland finished with 51 as a team. Garrett is no longer on the roster entering 2026, however, leaving a dramatically different defensive front for Rutenberg to build around.
Cleveland’s offense also looks different under Monken and Switzer.
Quinshon Judkins returns after leading the Browns with 827 rushing yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie. The quarterback room remains crowded, but Deshaun Watson has won the Week 1 job, with Shedeur Sanders serving as his backup and Gabriel opening the season on injured reserve.
The Browns ended August with their best preseason performance, beating New England 37-13 after losing their first two games. Gabriel threw three touchdown passes in that victory, while Cleveland produced 379 total yards before turning its attention to the regular season.

Browns vs. Jaguars QB Matchup
Trevor Lawrence enters the 2026 season firmly established as Jacksonville’s starter after his best statistical season under Liam Coen. He threw for 4,007 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while starting all 17 games.
Lawrence also became more dangerous around the goal line. His nine rushing touchdowns pushed him to 38 total scores, and Jacksonville finished sixth in scoring at 27.9 points per game.
That gives the Jaguars stability at the most important position.
Cleveland will counter with Deshaun Watson, who has been named the Week 1 starter after missing the entire 2025 season while recovering from his Achilles injury. Watson returned to compete for the job this offseason and ultimately won it over Sanders and the rest of Cleveland’s crowded quarterback room.
There is considerably more uncertainty on the Browns’ side.
Watson has experience, but he is returning to regular-season action after a long absence and will immediately face a Jacksonville defense that generated 31 takeaways last year. Lawrence, meanwhile, enters his second season in Coen’s offense with a much more established recent body of work.
Cleveland Browns vs. Jacksonville Jaguars bottom line: Jacksonville brings the more established quarterback and recent offensive production, while Cleveland enters Week 1 with a new staff and Watson returning after missing last season.

Browns Jaguars Free Pick: Over 40.5
Here is my Browns Jaguars free pick: I’m taking the Over 40.5 in Jacksonville.
The Jaguars gave bettors plenty to like offensively last season. They averaged 27.9 points per game, scored at least 23 in their final 10 regular-season games and now get a Cleveland team breaking in a new coaching staff.
Trevor Lawrence is the biggest reason I’m comfortable asking Jacksonville to carry its share of this total. He threw for 4,007 yards and 29 touchdowns last season, then added nine more scores on the ground, with Lawrence entering his second season in Liam Coen’s offense.
Cleveland does not need to turn this into a track meet.
Watson gets the Week 1 start, and the Browns still have Quinshon Judkins to keep the offense from becoming completely one-dimensional. Jacksonville was excellent against the run last year, but its pass defense was far less imposing, allowing 218.1 net passing yards per game. That gives Cleveland at least one reasonable path to putting points on the board.
Jacksonville’s offense is the side I trust more, and 40.5 leaves some room for the Browns to be merely competent. (DeShaun…please!)
A Jaguars game reaching the high 20s puts this total in a very workable spot. I’ll play the Over 40.5.
