07-21-23 | Astros -1.5 v. A's | Top | 6-4 | Win | 100 | 11 h 28 m | Show |
A couple of hard-luck left-handers go head-to-head Friday night when the visiting Houston Astros aim for their eighth consecutive win without a loss against the Oakland Athletics this season. Houston's Framber Valdez (7-6, 2.76 ERA) and Oakland's JP Sears (1-6, 3.99), a pair of six-game losers despite respectable ERAs, are scheduled to duel one night after J.P. France and Hogan Harris put on a nice show on the mound. The Astros' France prevailed in the series-opening pitchers' duel, getting a two-run, go-ahead double from Kyle Tucker and a solo home run from Alex Bregman in a 3-1 win. Valdez will try to give the Astros a third straight win overall after having been a bit questionable following his last start, a loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday. He left that contest in the seventh inning with a calf issue. Sears is winless in his past six starts, going 0-3 despite a respectable 3.68 ERA. He has been especially snake-bitten in July, as he has yet to pick up a decision despite producing a 1.93 ERA in three starts against the Detroit, Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins. Overall this season, he has just one win to show for 10 starts in which he allowed two or fewer runs. |
07-21-23 | Giants v. Nationals +1.5 | 3-5 | Win | 100 | 9 h 57 m | Show
Alex Wood (4-3, 4.53 ERA) gets the call for the Giants. The left-hander has worked in only one game since the All-Star break, giving up one run in 3 2/3 innings on Sunday at Pittsburgh. Wood holds a 6-5 record with 3.17 ERA in 15 career starts vs. Washington. The Nationals have produced 10 home runs in 88 all-time innings against Wood, who has issued more long balls to only one other opponent (12 to the Los Angeles Dodgers). Irvin (2-5, 4.96 ERA) will be Washington's starting pitcher in the series opener. He also has pitched just once since the break, logging three innings and giving up four runs on Saturday at St. Louis. Irvin will try to break a streak of four consecutive appearances in which he has allowed a home run. The rookie recorded his first career victory in his second game of the season when the Nationals prevailed at San Francisco on May 8. He blanked the Giants across 6 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and three walks with five strikeouts. The Nationals won two of three games in that series. |
07-21-23 | Padres -136 v. Tigers | Top | 5-4 | Win | 100 | 9 h 39 m | Show |
Reese Olson (1-3, 3.96 ERA) will start for Detroit on Friday. The rookie right-hander will be making his 10th appearance and seventh start of the season. Olson pitched well in his latest outing but didn't get any run support in a 2-0 loss at Seattle on Sunday. He lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs and six hits while recording five strikeouts. Seattle scored a run in the first and another in the fourth on a solo homer. Olson will be opposed by right-hander Seth Lugo (3-4, 3.78 ERA). After being a reliever for the majority of his first seven major league seasons with the New York Mets, Lugo has appeared exclusively as a starter for the Padres this year. He is set to make his 14th start of the season. He has also been stingy with base on balls, allowing just 13 in 69 innings compared with 64 strikeouts. He got roughed up on Sunday, surrendering five runs and seven hits, including two homers, in 5 1/3 innings at Philadelphia. |
07-20-23 | Cardinals +1.5 v. Cubs | Top | 7-2 | Win | 100 | 9 h 23 m | Show |
The St. Louis Cardinals are not playing like a club that reportedly could be a seller at the upcoming trade deadline. Meanwhile, Marcus Stroman might be making one of his final few starts for the Chicago Cubs. Riding a season-high five-game winning streak, the visiting Cardinals look to again get the best of Stroman during series opener against the rival Cubs on Thursday night. One of the major leagues' biggest disappointments, St. Louis entered the All-Star break 38-52. Earlier this week, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak hinted the club could deal veteran players for prospects by the Aug. 1 deadline. However, after losing 7-5 in 10 innings against the Washington Nationals on Friday, the Cardinals have totaled 34 runs and batted .330 while winning five straight, highlighted by this week's home sweep of the Miami Marlins. Though St. Louis is 10 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central, the Cardinals are winners of seven of their past eight. |
07-20-23 | Brewers v. Phillies +1.5 | Top | 4-0 | Loss | -190 | 2 h 2 m | Show |
The Phillies will hand the ball Thursday to right-hander Taijuan Walker (11-3, 4.00 ERA), who has won seven consecutive starts. Walker signed a four-year, $72 million deal in the offseason. After some rough early outings, he has proven to be one of the most reliable starters in the National League. In Walker's latest start, against the Padres on Saturday, he allowed four hits and two runs in five innings. Walker lost his lone career start against the Brewers when he gave up four runs on six hits in six-plus innings at Milwaukee last September while pitching for the New York Mets. Right-hander Corbin Burnes (8-5, 3.73 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Brewers on Thursday. In his most recent start, Burnes gave up two hits and two walks while striking out 13 in six scoreless innings against the Reds on Friday. Even more impressive was how he competed in the sweltering 90-plus degree conditions at Cincinnati. "He was getting better as we gave him time," Counsell said. "To strike out the side in the sixth was impressive." Burnes added, "The curveball was really good tonight." Burnes is 0-1 with a 1.08 ERA in three career games (one start) against the Phillies. |
07-20-23 | Diamondbacks v. Braves -185 | 5-7 | Win | 100 | 2 h 42 m | Show
The Braves need a big performance from right-hander Spencer Strider after losing the first two games of the series and four straight overall. NL All-Star starter Zac Gallen will get the ball for the Diamondbacks. Atlanta is already guaranteed to lose a second straight series after winning 11 straight, but the Braves will be trying to avoid getting swept for the first time since losing three straight to the host Toronto Blue Jays from May 12-14. Strider (11-3, 3.66 ERA) and Gallen (11-4, 3.14) are among five pitchers tied for the major league lead in victories. Strider also leads the majors by a wide margin with 176 strikeouts. The next-closest pitcher is Toronto's Kevin Gausman with 153. Gallen threw a scoreless inning last week in his All-Star debut, but the 27-year-old right-hander struggled in his first game back from the break on Saturday. He allowed three runs and six hits in five innings during a 5-2 loss at Toronto. Gallen struck out five and issued three walks. |
07-19-23 | Yankees -135 v. Angels | 3-7 | Loss | -135 | 7 h 9 m | Show
Carlos Rodon (0-2, 5.23 ERA) goes into the Wednesday game having thrown just 10 1/3 innings after signing a six-year, $162 million free-agent contract with the Yankees in December. His debut in pinstripes was delayed until July 7 due to forearm and back injuries. In five career starts against the Angels, Rodon is 2-3 with a 4.23 ERA. In Anaheim, he is 1-1 with a 2.30 ERA in two starts. The Angels announced late Tuesday that 23-year-old right-hander Chase Silseth (1-1, 5.30 ERA) would be recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday to start in the series finale. Silseth has never faced the Yankees. Silseth has appeared in nine games (one start) for the Angels earlier this season, walking 13 batters while striking out 15 over 18 2/3 innings. He began the season in Triple-A, then returned there in early June. Overall for Salt Lake, he has a 4-1 record with a 2.79 ERA in nine starts. |
07-19-23 | Astros v. Rockies +138 | 4-1 | Loss | -100 | 3 h 17 m | Show
As the Colorado rotation has been hit hard by injuries, Austin Gomber has stepped up for the Rockies. The left-hander is the only healthy starter left from Opening Day, and the effects are showing. Colorado went with a bullpen game on Tuesday night but now turns to its most reliable arm, Gomber, to wrap up a two-game series against the Houston Astros on Wednesday in Denver. Gomber (8-7, 6.19 ERA) will be opposed by Astros right-hander Brandon Bielak (4-5, 3.79) in the matinee game. |
07-19-23 | Guardians v. Pirates OVER 8.5 | Top | 5-7 | Win | 100 | 1 h 48 m | Show |
In the series finale, Cleveland right-hander Aaron Civale (3-2, 2.65 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Pittsburgh left-hander Rich Hill (7-9, 4.76). Civale did not get a decision on Friday when he gave up two runs and five hits in five innings at Texas. The Rangers came back against the Guardians' bullpen for a 12-4 win. Even with a fresh bullpen after the All-Star break, in hindsight, there might have been questions regarding whether Civale was pulled too quickly. He had an eight-pitch fifth and left with a 4-2 lead after throwing 79 pitches. |
07-18-23 | Twins v. Mariners UNDER 7.5 | 10-3 | Loss | -110 | 10 h 27 m | Show
Tuesday's pitching matchup features a pair of right-handers, Minnesota's Bailey Ober (5-4, 2.61 ERA) and Mariners rookie Bryan Woo (1-1, 3.63). Ober has made five straight quality starts of six or more innings and three or fewer earned runs allowed. He didn't get a decision in his latest outing, on July 7 against the visiting Baltimore Orioles, despite allowing just one run on four hits over six innings in a game the Twins lost 3-1 in 10 innings. Ober is 1-0 with a 4.00 ERA in two career starts against Seattle. Woo hasn't allowed more than two earned runs in his past six starts after getting hammered in his major league debut. In his most recent appearance, on July 8 at Houston, he gave up two runs -- one earned -- on three hits in six innings but didn't get a decision as the Mariners lost 3-2. Woo will be facing the Twins for the first time. |
07-18-23 | Padres -1.5 v. Blue Jays | Top | 9-1 | Win | 130 | 8 h 50 m | Show |
The Padres will send right-hander Joe Musgrove (8-2, 3.29 ERA) to the mound Tuesday. Musgrove is 7-0 with a 1.79 ERA in his last nine starts, allowing one run or fewer six times during the stretch. Musgrove defeated the New York Mets in his final start before the All-Star break. He gave up three hits over six scoreless innings. Musgrove, 30, is 1-0 with a 1.46 ERA in three career appearances (one start) against Toronto, the organization that drafted him in the first round in 2011 before trading him to the Houston Astros one year later. Right-hander Alek Manoah (2-7, 5.91) will start for Toronto and aims to follow up on an encouraging start against the Detroit Tigers on July 7. He gave up one run, five hits and no walks and struck out eight for his first victory since April 5. It was Manoah's first major league outing since June 5, when he gave up six runs and recorded just one out against the Astros. Manoah, a 2022 All-Star, even was torched for 11 runs in 2 2/3 innings in a rookie-level game on June 27 after being demoted. |
07-18-23 | Guardians v. Pirates OVER 8.5 | Top | 10-1 | Win | 100 | 8 h 57 m | Show |
On Tuesday, Cleveland left-hander Logan Allen (3-2, 3.47 ERA) is scheduled to start opposite Pittsburgh right-hander Mitch Keller (9-4, 3.31). Keller, a first-time All-Star after establishing himself as the Pirates' ace this season, pitched one inning in the Midsummer Classic last week. He will have gone a week without pitching since that appearance as Pittsburgh chose not to use him in its first four games following the All-Star break. |
07-17-23 | Twins v. Mariners UNDER 7.5 | 6-7 | Loss | -115 | 10 h 45 m | Show
Sonny Gray (4-3, 2.89 ERA) is coming off his worst start of the season, in which he allowed six runs on six hits over six innings of a 6-2 loss to visiting Baltimore on July 8. But the right-hander is 5-3 with a 2.73 ERA in 14 career starts against the Mariners. The Twins defeated host Oakland 5-4 Sunday as Alex Kirilloff hit a solo homer and a three-run double and Christian Vazquez also went deep. |
07-17-23 | Marlins v. Cardinals OVER 8 | Top | 4-6 | Win | 100 | 8 h 34 m | Show |
Jesus Luzardo (8-5, 3.29 ERA) has allowed four runs in 31 2/3 innings over his past five appearances, all quality starts. He has already set career highs for innings pitched (109 1/3) and strikeouts (129). The Cardinals originally scheduled Monday to be a bullpen game with starter Adam Wainwright on the injured list due to a sore shoulder and Jordan Montgomery needing another day to recover from a mild hamstring strain. However, Miles Mikolas (5-5, 4.12 ERA) threw just three quick innings against the Nationals on Friday before the game was suspended due to rain. Mikolas held Washington hitless, and Marmol elected to plug him into the Monday start. |
07-16-23 | Astros -124 v. Angels | Top | 9-8 | Win | 100 | 9 h 36 m | Show |
The Astros plan to start right-hander Cristian Javier on the mound in the series finale. They're hoping the sight of Los Angeles hitters in the batters box will help turn things around for Javier, who has recorded five straight no-decisions after winning five starts in a row. Javier (7-1, 4.34) is 5-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 10 career appearances (six starts) against the Angels. His five-game winning streak earlier this season began and ended versus Los Angeles. Javier allowed one run and six hits in six innings of a 9-6 win over the Angels on June 3. He also beat Los Angeles on May 10, permitting two runs and three hits in six innings while striking out a season-high 11 batters in the 5-4 win. Javier has struggled in his past three starts, however, posting a 15.19 ERA. Houston, however, won all three games. |
07-16-23 | Guardians +1.5 v. Rangers | 5-6 | Win | 100 | 4 h 7 m | Show
The Guardians will turn to right-hander Tanner Bibee (5-2, 3.34 ERA) in the series finale. He received a no-decision after allowing one run over five innings against the Kansas City Royals on July 6. Bibee, 24, has been impressive since being promoted to make his major league debut on April 26. However, his control issues have limited him to five innings or fewer in five of his last seven starts. |
07-16-23 | Giants -138 v. Pirates | Top | 8-4 | Win | 100 | 2 h 41 m | Show |
San Francisco did not name a starter for the series finale until after Saturday's game -- left-hander Alex Wood (4-3, 4.68 ERA) -- while Pittsburgh is scheduled to go with right-hander Osvaldo Bido (1-1, 4.44). Wood is 6-4 with a 3.72 ERA in 15 career games against the Pirates, 14 of them starts. Bido, who has never faced San Francisco, is coming off his first career win. That was July 9 when he pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings over the fourth and fifth innings in relief at Arizona as the Pirates went with a bullpen game on the eve of the All-Star break. The rookie had made five starts before that lone relief appearance since being recalled and worked Sunday on three days' rest. |
07-15-23 | Tigers v. Mariners UNDER 7.5 | Top | 6-0 | Win | 100 | 10 h 42 m | Show |
The series continues Saturday, with All-Star right-handers Michael Lorenzen (3-6, 4.03 ERA) of Detroit and George Kirby (8-7, 3.09) of Seattle scheduled to take the mound. Kirby has won his past two starts -- against Tampa Bay and Houston -- allowing just three earned runs over 13 2/3 innings in the process. Kirby is 1-1 with a 4.00 ERA in two previous starts against Detroit. Lorenzen snapped a four-game losing streak in his most recent start, allowing three hits over five scoreless innings in a 9-0 victory against visiting Oakland. He is 1-2 with an 8.16 ERA in four career appearances against Seattle, including three starts. |
07-15-23 | Giants v. Pirates OVER 8.5 | Top | 3-1 | Loss | -115 | 7 h 11 m | Show |
In the middle game of the series, San Francisco right-hander Alex Cobb (6-2, 2.91 ERA) and Pittsburgh right-hander Johan Oviedo (3-10, 4.75) are scheduled to start. In his last game before the All-Star break, Cobb turned in a gem. On July 5 against the visiting Seattle Mariners, he pitched six scoreless innings, scattering six hits, striking out seven and walking none in the Giants' 2-0 win. The result also ending San Francisco's four-game losing streak. Oviedo, meanwhile, has lost his past seven decisions, and he took defeats in each of his past six starts. Most recently, he gave up five runs in 6 2/3 innings on July 6 as the Pirates lost 5-2 to the host Los Angeles Dodgers. Of the six hits he allowed, two were two-run homers. |
07-15-23 | Guardians +1.5 v. Rangers | 0-2 | Loss | -142 | 4 h 15 m | Show
Texas is scheduled to start left-hander Andrew Heaney opposite Cleveland right-hander Gavin Williams. Heaney will be appearing in his 155th game in the big leagues, his 144th start. Williams, a rookie, will be making just his fifth appearance, all starts. Heaney (5-6, 4.71 ERA) will try to put behind him a forgettable start to close out the first half. He allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts over three innings in the Rangers' 8-3 loss to the host Washington Nationals on July 8. Heaney gave up three home runs that day, and he didn't return after a 77-minute rain delay in the top of the fourth inning. He has no decisions against the Guardians in his career, posting a 4.24 ERA in four games, including three starts, in 17 innings. For the Guardians, Williams (1-1, 4.01 ERA) earned his first major league win in his latest start. Against the visiting Kansas City Royals on July 8, he allowed three runs on eight hits with one walk and seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Williams is set to make just his second career road start. Listed by MLB.com as the Guardians' top prospect, Williams joined the Guardians on June 20. He was a first-round pick in the 2021 draft, largely because his fastball can reach triple digits. |
07-15-23 | Padres v. Phillies +1.5 | Top | 4-6 | Win | 100 | 1 h 19 m | Show |
Suarez is 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in four career games (one start) against the Padres. |
07-14-23 | Twins -190 v. A's | 5-4 | Win | 100 | 18 h 48 m | Show
The Twins posted baseball's third-best ERA (3.68) and second-best average allowed (.228) in the first half. Maeda (2-5, 5.18 ERA) hasn't contributed much so far, largely due to a right triceps injury suffered in late April. He returned to pitch well in three starts leading into the All-Star break, yielding just three earned runs in 17 innings. The 35-year-old has made just two career starts against the A's and neither went well. He was roughed up for 12 runs (10 earned) and 16 hits in seven innings, going 0-0 with a 12.86 ERA in those games. Maeda should expect to be facing a couple of new faces after the A's ranked dead-last in all of baseball in the first half in runs (329) and batting average (.221). Both marks actually are higher than 2022, when the Athletics put up only 306 runs and hit just .211 in the first half. No other A's team scored fewer than 329 runs in a first half since 2012 (319). Oakland is expected to promote two of its top prospects from Triple-A Las Vegas for the second-half opener -- catcher/first baseman Tyler Soderstrom and infielder Zack Gelof. |
07-14-23 | Dodgers v. Mets +115 | Top | 6-0 | Loss | -100 | 15 h 22 m | Show |
Left-hander Julio Urias (6-5, 4.76 ERA) is slated to start for the Dodgers against right-hander Justin Verlander (3-4, 3.60) in a battle of former 20-game winners. The Dodgers closed out the first half by beating the visiting Los Angeles Angels to complete a two-game series sweep and run their winning streak to four. The Mets suffered their second straight loss Sunday to the host San Diego Padres. At 51-38, the Dodgers -- who won a franchise-record 111 games last season -- are on pace to record fewer than 100 victories in a 162-game schedule for the first time since 2017. Los Angeles went 92-71 before falling to the Houston Astros in a seven-game World Series. |
07-14-23 | Brewers -116 v. Reds | Top | 1-0 | Win | 100 | 15 h 14 m | Show |
Milwaukee ace and All-Star pitcher Corbin Burnes (7-5, 3.94 ERA) will start the series opener Friday against Cincinnati. Burnes has a pair of quality starts against Cincinnati in his previous two outings, including on July 7 when he held the Reds to three runs on two hits over six innings in a 7-3 Milwaukee win. Burnes is 3-1 with a 2.80 ERA in 16 career appearances against Cincinnati, including six starts. The Reds counter with another right-hander in Graham Ashcraft (4-6, 6.28), making his team-leading 17th start of 2023. In his last start on July 5 in Washington, Ashcraft snapped a personal three-game skid and won for the first time since May 28, scattering seven hits and one run over six innings in Cincinnati's 9-2 win. Ashcraft is winless in four career starts against Milwaukee, going 0-3 with 10.13 ERA. He was tagged for a career-worst 10 runs -- all earned -- on nine hits over four innings in a 10-8 Milwaukee win on June 3 in Cincinnati. |
07-11-23 | National League v. American League -104 | 3-2 | Loss | -104 | 9 h 13 m | Show
The American League enters Tuesday's Midsummer Classic at T-Mobile Park with a nine-game winning streak and only three losses to the National League in the annual exhibition since 1997. Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani won't pitch in the game because of a blister but is in the lineup batting second. Ohtani leads the majors in home runs (32) and triples (six). On the mound, Ohtani hits the break fourth in MLB with 132 strikeouts and opponents are batting .189 against him. He started the 2022 All-Star Game and sat down the first three batters he faced in order. |
07-11-23 | National League v. American League UNDER 7.5 | Top | 3-2 | Win | 100 | 9 h 18 m | Show |
With Ohtani unavailable, Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (9-2, 2.85 ERA in the first half) was named the AL starter. Cole is a six-time All-Star but last pitched in the game in 2015. He'll go on two days rest after pitching 7 1/3 innings on Saturday and oppose Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen (11-3, 3.04 ERA). |
07-09-23 | Pirates v. Diamondbacks -1.5 | 4-2 | Loss | -100 | 5 h 41 m | Show
Pittsburgh plans to go the bullpen route in the series finale with Carmen Mlodzinski serving as the opener. Mlodzinski (1-1, 2.61 ERA) has made all nine of his appearances this season out of the bullpen. He has never faced Arizona. Zach Davies (1-4, 6.52) will try to find his way out of a season-long slump when he takes the ball for the Diamondbacks. He made his best start of the season on June 28 against the Tampa Bay Rays, throwing seven shutout innings without getting a decision in the 3-2 loss, but took another step back in his most recent outing Tuesday. He surrendered four runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings and did not receive a decision after giving up a season-high two home runs in an 8-5 loss to the Mets. Davies went just 2-5 in 27 starts in his first season with the Diamondbacks last year, a long distance from his career-best season of 2017, when he went 17-9 with a 3.90 ERA in 33 starts for the Milwaukee Brewers. He has made 19 career starts against the Pirates, owning a 6-6 mark with a 4.64 ERA. |
07-09-23 | Phillies +110 v. Marlins | Top | 3-7 | Loss | -100 | 2 h 15 m | Show |
Sunday's pitching matchup will feature Marlins lefty Jesus Luzardo (7-5, 3.32 ERA) against Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola (8-5, 4.30). Luzardo, who leads the Marlins in wins and tops Miami's starters in ERA, has faced the Phillies four times. He is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA against them. Nola is 5-9 with a 3.32 ERA in 21 starts against the Marlins. This season, he had an ERA of 3.58 for April, 4.93 for May and 4.06 for June, but he is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA in July. If Nola does not throw a complete game on Sunday, the Phillies can turn to a solid bullpen that had a 26-inning scoreless-innings streak that ended on Saturday. |
07-09-23 | Blue Jays -126 v. Tigers | Top | 4-3 | Win | 100 | 2 h 2 m | Show |
Skubal (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his second start of the season for Detroit on Sunday. Skubal, who underwent flexor tendon surgery last summer, tossed four no-hit innings against Oakland on Tuesday. Chris Bassitt (8-5, 4.09 ERA), who will start the series finale for Toronto, survived a rough patch to post back-to-back solid outings. Bassitt gave up 15 earned runs in 11 2/3 innings during a stretch of three starts last month. In his final June start, he tossed six shutout outings against San Francisco while racking up 12 strikeouts. In his outing on Tuesday, Bassitt gave up three runs and six hits in six innings against the Chicago White Sox. Lost in the euphoria of the no-hitter was the triumphant return of Tigers outfielder Riley Greene. After recovering from a leg injury, Greene was activated off the injured list on Saturday and reached base four times. He was 2-for-2 and walked twice |
07-08-23 | Braves v. Rays +1.5 | Top | 6-1 | Loss | -130 | 8 h 40 m | Show |
Atlanta is going with All-Star Spencer Strider (10-2, 3.66 ERA), who leads the majors with 155 strikeouts. Tampa Bay is turning to rookie Taj Bradley (5-4, 5.27), who has 76 strikeouts in 56 1/3 innings. Neither starter has yet to face the opposition. Strider is one of a franchise-high eight players to be selected to the All-Star Game. The 24-year-old has won each of his past four starts, fanning 34 in 24 2/3 innings in that span. He gave up three runs (two earned) with nine strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings against the Miami Marlins on Sunday. |
07-08-23 | Rangers v. Nationals +180 | 3-8 | Win | 180 | 5 h 34 m | Show
The Rangers will look to take the series behind left-hander Andrew Heaney (5-5, 4.12 ERA), who allowed just three hits over five shutout innings in a 5-3 loss to the visiting Houston Astros on Sunday. However, he was pulled after just 85 pitches. Heaney got rocked for six runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings in his previous start, a 7-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers on June 26. He gave up two home runs in 5 2/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox in a 5-2 win two starts ago. |
07-08-23 | Cubs v. Yankees -1.5 | Top | 3-6 | Win | 105 | 2 h 40 m | Show |
The Yankees will attempt to produce improved results at the plate for Cole (8-2, 2.79 ERA), who is 1-2 with a 2.70 ERA in his past five outings. Cole has allowed two runs or fewer 13 times and the Yankees dropped to 9-4 in those games when he allowed two runs on six hits in six innings during a 5-1 loss at St. Louis on Sunday. Cole is 10-3 with a 2.53 ERA in 15 career starts against the Cubs and is facing Chicago for the first time since striking out 12 in six innings for Houston on May 27, 2019. After completing their 10th shutout this season, the Cubs hand the ball to Drew Smyly (7-5, 4.10). Smyly was 5-1 with a 2.60 ERA through his first 10 starts but is 2-4 with a 6.49 ERA in his past seven. Smyly took a no-decision for the first time since May 17 on Monday when he allowed three runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings at Milwaukee. During his second-shortest outing this season, Smyly threw a season-low 73 pitches five days after getting tagged for seven runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies. Smyly is 3-0 with a 1.85 ERA in nine career appearances (seven starts) against the Yankees. He last opposed the Yankees on Sept. 20, 2016, when he allowed one run on four hits in six innings with Tampa Bay. |
07-07-23 | Angels v. Dodgers -165 | 4-11 | Win | 100 | 18 h 10 m | Show
Griffin Canning fell to 6-3, allowing five runs on three hits and four walks in 6.0 innings, as the Los Angeles Angels lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-2 on Friday. Canning struck out nine, ending the game with a 4.29 ERA and 1.16 WHIP on the season. |
07-07-23 | Cubs +1.5 v. Yankees | Top | 3-0 | Win | 100 | 15 h 1 m | Show |
Cubs are 22-4 in their last 26 Friday games. Yankees are 2-7 in their last 9 when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game. |
07-07-23 | Braves v. Rays -110 | Top | 2-1 | Loss | -110 | 15 h 56 m | Show |
On Friday, the Braves are sending veteran Charlie Morton (8-6, 3.57 ERA) to the mound, while the Rays counter with fellow righty Tyler Glasnow (2-2, 4.50). Morton, 39, pitched for the Rays in 2019-20, and was a prominent performer on Tampa Bay's 2020 team that lost in the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games. The right-hander has made six career starts against the Rays and holds a 2-3 record with a 3.44 ERA in those meetings. In his last two starts, Glasnow has combined to strike out 23 in 10 2/3 innings. However, he has nothing to show for it on his record, taking a loss at Seattle on Saturday and a no-decision at home against the Kansas City Royals on June 25. |
07-06-23 | Cardinals +111 v. Marlins | 3-0 | Win | 111 | 8 h 48 m | Show
The Miami Marlins won't lean on experience when they try for a four-game sweep of the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night. Instead, rookie right-hander Eury Perez (5-2, 2.47 ERA) will get the start for Miami. Just 20 years old, Perez is having an amazing season. At 6-foot-8, he has shown stellar body control, repeating his delivery with ease while flashing a 98 mph fastball. However, Perez -- who has yet to face the Cardinals -- is coming off the worst start of his brief major league career. He lasted just one-third of an inning on Saturday against the Atlanta Braves, when he gave up six runs on seven hits in a 7-0 loss. |
07-06-23 | Cubs +100 v. Brewers | Top | 5-6 | Loss | -100 | 3 h 10 m | Show |
Marcus Stroman has not pitched like an All-Star of late for the Chicago Cubs. However, since the start of last season, he's been stellar against the Milwaukee Brewers. Looking to avoid a third straight losing start, Stroman can help the visiting Cubs record their third consecutive victory and claim this four-game set from the Brewers on Thursday. From May 19-June 20, Stroman (9-6, 2.76 ERA) allowed seven earned runs and 27 hits over 48 2/3 innings to win seven straight starts. Since then, though, the right-hander has yielded eight earned runs and 13 hits over nine innings in losing two in a row. He gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings of Saturday's 6-0 loss to Cleveland. Scheduled Milwaukee starter Freddy Peralta (5-7, 4.67) is 0-4 with a 5.45 ERA in seven starts since winning at Tampa Bay on May 21. The right-hander was serviceable on Friday at Pittsburgh, allowing three runs, three hits and two walks while striking out eight in 5 1/3 innings as the Brewers blew a late lead in the 8-7 defeat. |
07-06-23 | A's +156 v. Tigers | Top | 0-9 | Loss | -100 | 2 h 23 m | Show |
Rookie left-hander Hogan Harris (2-2, 5.17 ERA) will start the series finale for the A's. He went 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA in his past three starts after posting back-to-back victories. Harris gave up five runs (four earned) and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings against the New York Yankees on June 29. He yielded just two runs in the first five innings, but New York erupted for eight runs in the sixth. He will be opposed by right-hander Michael Lorenzen (2-6, 4.28 ERA), who was surprisingly chosen as Detroit's All-Star representative. |
07-05-23 | Pirates v. Dodgers OVER 9 | 4-6 | Win | 100 | 11 h 5 m | Show
Rookie right-handers Osvaldo Bido (0-1, 4.74 ERA) of the visiting Pirates and Bobby Miller (4-1, 4.23) of the Dodgers will square off with a combined 57 1/3 career innings between them. To put that into perspective, MLB innings leader Logan Webb of the San Francisco Giants heads into play Wednesday with 117 innings this season alone. |
07-05-23 | Reds -115 v. Nationals | Top | 9-2 | Win | 100 | 8 h 55 m | Show |
Josiah Gray (6-6, 3.30 ERA), who was named to the National League All-Star team on Sunday, starts for the Nationals, who have dropped the first two games of their four-game set against the Reds. Right-hander Graham Ashcraft (3-6, 6.66 ERA) will start for the Reds. After going 0-3 with a 16.03 ERA in his first three June starts, he rebounded in his latest outing, allowing one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings of a no-decision against the San Diego Padres on Friday. He walked two and struck out seven. |
07-05-23 | Cardinals v. Marlins UNDER 8.5 | Top | 9-10 | Loss | -110 | 8 h 40 m | Show |
Miami, which has gone 13-6 over its past 19 games, will start Bryan Hoeing (1-2, 3.72 ERA). The right-hander, though, has been much more effective as a reliever (1-0, 1.56 ERA over 17 1/3 innings). As a starter, he is 0-2 with a 5.48 ERA in five outings covering 21 1/3 innings. The good news for Hoeing on Wednesday is that his home numbers have been stellar (0-0, 0.87 ERA). On the road, he is 1-2 with a 7.00 ERA. Hoeing is surely hoping he gets half the support the Marlins provided on Tuesday, when they routed the Cardinals 15-2. The 15 runs were a season high for Miami. |
07-04-23 | Angels v. Padres -1.5 | Top | 5-8 | Win | 170 | 8 h 37 m | Show |
Ohtani will pitch against the Padres for the first time in his career in front of what is expected to be San Diego's 35th sellout crowd of the season. Over his last three starts, Ohtani is 2-1 with a 1.86 ERA. The Padres will counter with Joe Musgrove (6-2, 3.80 ERA). The right-hander is 2-0 over his last three starts with a 2.37 ERA. In seven starts since May 26, Musgrove is 5-0 with a 2.13 ERA. Musgrove has a 3-1 career record against the Angels with a 2.88 ERA in seven appearances (three starts). However, he has faced Los Angeles only once since 2017, when he threw a three-hit, complete-game shutout on Aug. 27, 2021. |
07-04-23 | Cubs v. Brewers OVER 9 | 7-6 | Win | 100 | 5 h 11 m | Show
The Cubs will look to get on track behind right-hander Kyle Hendricks (3-3, 2.81 ERA). He had his three-start winning streak snapped last Thursday after allowing three runs over seven innings in a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Hendricks has allowed three earned runs or fewer in all seven of his outings this season. Milwaukee will counter with left-hander Wade Miley (5-2, 3.02), who received a no-decision after giving up two runs and three hits over four innings against the New York Mets last Wednesday. Miley has thrown 77 pitches or fewer in all three of his starts since coming off the injured list in mid-June. |
07-04-23 | Cardinals +170 v. Marlins | Top | 2-15 | Loss | -100 | 2 h 14 m | Show |
Wainwright (3-3, 7.45 ERA) allowed 13 runs on 17 hits over just 4 2/3 innings in his last two efforts while remaining stuck on 198 career victories. In his most recent start, Wainwright allowed six runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings in the 14-0 loss to the Houston Astros. He walked three and struck out one. Wainwright is 8-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 16 career appearances (14 starts) against the Marlins. |
07-03-23 | Orioles -1.5 v. Yankees | Top | 3-6 | Loss | -100 | 7 h 35 m | Show |
Domingo German on Wednesday joined Don Larsen, David Wells and David Cone as the only New York Yankees to throw a perfect game, and now the intrigue will be about what the follow-up performance looks like. Coming off his historic perfect game, German will be on the mound Monday night when the Yankees return home for the opener of a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees, who dropped two of three at home to Baltimore May 23-25, are returning to New York after a 3-3 road trip. They ended the trip by being held to three hits in a 5-1 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. German (5-5, 4.54 ERA) had allowed a combined 17 earned runs in consecutive losses at Boston and to Seattle before making history in Oakland. The right-hander threw 99 pitches, including 51 curveballs, and got nine strikeouts against the Athletics in an 11-0 victory. Tyler Wells (6-4, 3.21) starts for Baltimore and hopes to avoid his third straight loss. He allowed four runs in five innings June 21 in a 7-2 defeat at Tampa Bay, and then allowed two runs in six innings in a 3-1 loss to the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. We anticipate German not being as sharp as he was against Oakland. |
07-03-23 | Cardinals v. Marlins -1.5 | Top | 4-5 | Loss | -100 | 6 h 58 m | Show |
After struggling through a June to forget, St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Miles Mikolas will try to gain a fresh start in July. Mikolas finished 0-4 with a 6.07 ERA in five starts last month. He will flip the calendar with a tough road assignment against the Miami Marlins Monday at LoanDepot Park. The Cardinals will have their hands full against left-hander Braxton Garrett (4-2, 3.53), who has allowed just 11 earned runs in 50 innings over his last nine starts for a 1.98 ERA in that span. In his previous start, Garrett held the Red Sox to one run on three hits in five innings in an outing cut short by a rain delay in Boston. |
07-03-23 | Cubs -1.5 v. Brewers | 6-8 | Loss | -100 | 2 h 34 m | Show
Milwaukee will send right-hander Julio Teheran (2-3, 2.85 ERA) to the mound in the series opener. He allowed seven runs, including four home runs, over 5 2/3 innings in a 7-2 loss to the New York Mets last Tuesday. Teheran had given up a total of six earned runs over 35 1/3 innings in his first six starts with the Brewers prior to the rough outing. Chicago will counter with left-hander Drew Smyly (7-5, 3.96), who is looking to bounce back after giving up seven runs over 3 2/3 innings in an 8-5 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies last Wednesday. |
07-02-23 | Astros v. Rangers -135 | 5-3 | Loss | -135 | 4 h 53 m | Show
Left-hander Andrew Heaney (5-5, 4.38 ERA) will start for the Rangers. He's coming off a 7-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers on Monday, in which he gave up six runs on six hits -- including two home runs -- and walked three while striking out five in 5 2/3 innings. That is what awaits Houston right-hander Shawn Dubin (0-0, 10.80 ERA), who will make his first major league start. He is subbing for Framber Valdez, who will miss his scheduled start due to right ankle soreness. Dubin, a 27-year-old rookie, has made two relief appearances on the season, giving up six runs on nine hits in five innings. He has never faced the Rangers. The veteran Heaney is 3-4 with a 3.27 ERA in 12 career starts against the Astros. He will look to rebound from a subpar June, in which he was 1-2 with a 5.87 ERA in five starts. |
07-02-23 | Nationals v. Phillies UNDER 9.5 | Top | 5-4 | Win | 100 | 3 h 48 m | Show |
Washington plans to start right-hander Trevor Williams in the series finale, while the Phillies will counter with left-hander Ranger Suarez. Williams and Suarez went head-to-head on June 4 in the nation's capital, and Suarez had the better performance in the 11-3 win by Philadelphia. Williams allowed four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings, while Suarez earned the win after giving up one run and eight hits in seven innings. Williams (4-4, 4.28 ERA) most recently pitched four innings against the Seattle Mariners last Monday, allowing three runs and eight hits while avoiding the loss in the 8-4 defeat. Outside of a rain-suspended game on May 13 against the New York Mets, it was the shortest outing of the season for Williams, who is 0-3 with a 5.22 ERA in seven career appearances (five starts) against the Phillies. Suarez (2-2, 3.18) had one of the best months of June in the majors, posting a 2-0 mark and 1.08 ERA in five starts covering 33 1/3 innings. |
07-02-23 | Twins -111 v. Orioles | Top | 1-2 | Loss | -111 | 1 h 27 m | Show |
Twins right-hander Sonny Gray (4-2, 2.67 ERA) looks to continue the stinginess evidenced by Minnesota starters in the series thus far. Pablo Lopez and Bailey Ober combined to limit the Orioles to one run and five hits over 13 innings in the first two games. The Orioles have lost four straight and 16 of their last 31 and will try to avoid being swept for the first time this season on Sunday. |
07-01-23 | Guardians v. Cubs OVER 7.5 | 6-0 | Loss | -110 | 17 h 19 m | Show
Marcus Stroman fell to 9-5, allowing six runs - three earned - on eight hits and one walk in 3.1 innings, as the Chicago Cubs lost to the St. Louis Cardinals 7-5 on Sunday. Stroman struck out two, ending the game with a 2.47 ERA and 1.08 WHIP on the season. |
07-01-23 | Nationals +1.5 v. Phillies | Top | 4-19 | Loss | -109 | 11 h 18 m | Show |
The Nationals will hand the ball to MacKenzie Gore (4-6, 3.89 ERA) on Saturday. In Gore's latest start, on Sunday against the Padres, the left-hander allowed five hits and one run while striking out nine in an 8-3 win. The Phillies will attempt to even the series as ace right-hander Zack Wheeler (6-4, 3.86 ERA) takes the mound. Wheeler struggled mightily in his latest start as he gave up nine hits and five runs in 5 1/3 innings during a no-decision against the New York Mets on Sunday. In his career against the Nationals, Wheeler is 10-14 with a 4.59 ERA in 29 starts. He escaped with a no-decision at Washington on June 2 after yielding seven runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. In their one-run loss on Friday, the Phillies went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven on base, an ongoing struggle for the offense this season. |
07-01-23 | Yankees v. Cardinals UNDER 9 | Top | 4-11 | Loss | -110 | 10 h 39 m | Show |
The Yankees will start Luis Severino (1-2, 5.25 ERA) in the opener of a day-night doubleheader at Busch Stadium. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said the nightcap would be a bullpen game, featuring a 27th man to be added to the roster, and Gerrit Cole's start would be moved from Saturday to Sunday. The Cardinals will stick with Jack Flaherty (4-5, 4.95 ERA) in Game 1 and start Matthew Liberatore (1-2, 5.60) in Game 2. Severino is coming off his best performance of the season. He threw six strong innings to earn the victory as the Yankees edged the Texas Rangers 1-0 on June 24. |
06-30-23 | Astros +154 v. Rangers | 5-3 | Win | 154 | 9 h 57 m | Show
The Texas Rangers and Houston Astros will open a highly anticipated American League West showdown on Friday night in Arlington, Texas. The Rangers pushed back veteran right-hander Jon Gray to be available for the opener of the four-game series. The Astros are expected to start right-hander Ronel Blanco. Gray (6-3, 2.89 ERA) will make his 15th start of the season and is coming off a tough-luck loss to the New York Yankees on Saturday. He allowed one run on three hits over five innings as the Rangers fell 1-0. In his career vs. the Astros, Gray is 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA over five starts. He faced them earlier this season on April 15 in Houston, exiting in the third inning after taking a line drive off his right elbow. For the Astros, Blanco (1-0, 4.63 ERA) will make his fifth start since moving into the rotation on June 1. In his latest outing, a no-decision against the host Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday, he allowed three runs on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts over six innings. Blanco started the season in a relief role and made two appearances against the Rangers during a series in mid-April. He gave up one run on two hits in a one-inning outing on April 14, then yielded three unearned runs over two innings on April 16. |
06-30-23 | Brewers v. Pirates +124 | Top | 7-8 | Win | 124 | 8 h 54 m | Show |
In the series opener on Friday, Milwaukee's Freddy Peralta (5-7, 4.65 ERA) is scheduled to start against Pittsburgh's Osvaldo Bido (0-1, 3.45) in a matchup of right-handers. Peralta is coming off a loss at Cleveland on Saturday in which he allowed three runs and four hits in five-plus innings. He continually worked through jams -- including getting out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation with just one run in the fourth. Bido, another Pittsburgh rookie, will make his fourth career start, his first against the Brewers. He received zero runs of support while in the game in his past two outings. Most recently, he allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings during a no-decision Saturday at Miami. Bido allowed nine hits and no walks while fanning five. |
06-30-23 | Padres v. Reds +121 | Top | 5-7 | Win | 121 | 6 h 7 m | Show |
The Reds will send right-hander Graham Ashcraft (3-6, 7.17 ERA) to the mound on Friday. He will be making his second start back from a bruised left calf sustained on June 8 vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers, his 15th overall this season. Ashcraft faced the Padres for the first time in his career last month, when he gave up one run in six innings during Cincinnati's 2-1 win on May 2. San Diego will counter with right-hander Seth Lugo (3-4, 4.01 ERA), making his 11th start. Lugo is filling in for righty Yu Darvish, who was scratched on Tuesday due to an illness. Manager Bob Melvin rescheduled Darvish for Friday, but Darvish had not improved enough to make the start. Lugo is 2-1 with a 1.16 ERA in 15 games (two starts) against Cincinnati. He beat the Reds on May 3, when he tossed six innings of one-run ball. |
06-29-23 | Brewers v. Mets -180 | 3-2 | Loss | -180 | 9 h 39 m | Show
Max Scherzer (7-2, 3.95 ERA) is slated to start for the Mets against Adrian Houser (2-2, 4.02) in a battle of right-handers. Scherzer earned a win on Saturday when he allowed two runs over six innings as the Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2. He is 3-4 with a 2.63 ERA in 12 career games (11 starts) against the Brewers. Scherzer lost at Milwaukee on April 4, when he yielded five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. |
06-29-23 | Guardians -1.5 v. Royals | Top | 3-4 | Loss | -100 | 4 h 35 m | Show |
Former American League Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber has just two victories over his past eight starts, including losses in his past two outings. The right-hander will look to start a turnaround as he and the Cleveland Guardians attempt to complete a three-game sweep of the host Kansas City Royals on Thursday. Bieber, 28, has never lost to the Royals. He is 6-0 with a 3.03 ERA in 13 career starts vs. Kansas City. Cleveland won 2-1 on Tuesday and 14-1 on Wednesday and has taken seven of its past nine to move into first place in the American League Central. Greinke, 39, is 12-9 with a 3.41 ERA in 35 games (30 starts) against Cleveland. Myles Straw is 5-for-9 off Greinke, while Ramirez (3-for-16) and Steven Kwan (1-for-10) have struggled. |
06-29-23 | Tigers v. Rangers UNDER 9.5 | Top | 8-5 | Loss | -125 | 4 h 39 m | Show |
The Rangers announced late Wednesday that left-hander Cody Bradford (0-1, 5.40 ERA) is the team's probable pitcher. The Tigers are expected to send right-hander Reese Olson (1-2, 4.74 ERA) to the mound. Olson has never faced the Rangers, while Bradford retired the only two batters he faced when Detroit beat Texas 7-2 on Monday. Bradford's first three major league appearances came as a spot starter. In his latest start, vs. the Los Angeles Angels on June 13, Bradford allowed one run on two hits with one walk and three strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings. He went five innings in each of his first two starts. That's probably all the Rangers are hoping to get out of Bradford. After all, the bullpen is in good shape after Dane Dunning tossed 8 2/3 innings in a 10-strikeout performance on Wednesday. Dunning's showing generated plenty of buzz after the Rangers' 10-2 win. |
06-28-23 | Brewers v. Mets -136 | Top | 5-2 | Loss | -136 | 8 h 39 m | Show |
Right-hander Kodai Senga (6-5, 3.52 ERA) is scheduled to start for New York against left-hander Wade Miley (5-2, 2.91). Senga took the loss on Friday, when he gave up four runs (two earned) over 5 1/3 innings as the Mets fell 5-1 at Philadelphia. The 30-year-old rookie has never faced the Brewers. Miley earned a win on Friday after allowing three hits over six scoreless innings in the Brewers' 7-1 victory over at Cleveland. He is 2-1 with a 3.19 ERA in seven career starts against the Mets. Miley held New York scoreless for six innings on April 4 in Milwaukee, and he got a victory in his first start of the season the Brewers as prevailed 9-0 |
06-28-23 | Giants v. Blue Jays +100 | 1-6 | Win | 100 | 8 h 40 m | Show
The Giants are scheduled to start right-hander Logan Webb (7-6, 3.16 ERA) who will be facing the Blue Jays for the first time in his career. Toronto had not named a starter as of late Tuesday night. If I had to guess, Trevor Richards will likely get the start for Toronto. |
06-28-23 | Twins +1.5 v. Braves | Top | 0-3 | Loss | -135 | 1 h 59 m | Show |
The Atlanta Braves will recall left-hander Kolby Allard from Triple-A Gwinnett and send him to the mound on Wednesday in an effort to sweep the visiting Minnesota Twins. The Braves took the first two games of the series, and they have won four straight and 12 of their last 13. The Twins have dropped three of their past four and are 2-3 on their current nine-game road trip. Allard will be opposed by Minnesota's Kenta Maeda (1-4, 6.86 ERA) as the Braves go for their eighth sweep of the season. Allard has missed the entire season with a right oblique strain sustained in spring training. The Braves' 2015 first-round pick was traded to Texas in July 2019, then reacquired from the Rangers in November. Over the past two weeks, Allard has made two rehab starts for Gwinnett, posting a 2.70 ERA in 6 2/3 combined innings. |
06-27-23 | Yankees -129 v. A's | 1-2 | Loss | -129 | 10 h 58 m | Show
The Oakland homestand begins with Paul Blackburn (0-0, 4.21) on the mound, facing the Yankees' Jhony Brito (4-3, 4.89) in a duel of right-handers. Blackburn has pitched well in both home starts this season, limiting the Atlanta Braves and Rays to a total of three earned runs in 9 2/3 innings. He's 0-0 with a 2.70 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees. New York has won each of Brito's last four starts, including an 11-3 home romp over the A's on May 10, when he allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings. It was the rookie's first start against Oakland. |
06-27-23 | Marlins v. Red Sox -120 | Top | 10-1 | Loss | -120 | 7 h 25 m | Show |
The Marlins are one of those strong clubs, entering Monday with the third-best record in the National League. Garrett Whitlock (4-2, 4.50 ERA) will be the first Boston starter to face them in the series. Whitlock, who has never started against Miami, has worked seven innings in back-to-back starts but took a no-decision after allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out six last Wednesday at Minnesota. His past three decisions dating back a month have been wins. In the series opener, the Red Sox will be up against a tough starter in reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara (2-6, 5.08). Alcantara will look to follow up yet another impressive performance by 20-year-old rookie Eury Perez, who struck out nine and extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 21 in Sunday's 2-0 win over Pittsburgh. |
06-27-23 | Padres v. Pirates +167 | Top | 4-9 | Win | 167 | 7 h 26 m | Show |
In the series opener, San Diego right-hander Yu Darvish (5-6, 4.84 ERA) and Pittsburgh left-hander Rich Hill (6-7, 4.34) are scheduled to start. Darvish, a five-time All-Star who opened the season with five quality starts in his first seven appearances, has run into a bump. He has lost two straight starts and has given up 10 runs over his past 11 innings. He has one quality start over his past seven outings. Most recently, he allowed four runs in six innings Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants. Hill is coming off tough outing Wednesday, when he gave up five runs (three earned) in 5 2/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs in an 8-3 Pittsburgh loss. Hill is 6-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 13 career starts against the Padres but has not faced them since 2019. |
06-26-23 | Nationals v. Mariners UNDER 8 | 4-8 | Loss | -115 | 10 h 57 m | Show

This will be the first time Williams has faced Seattle in his eight-year career. Castillo is 0-5 with a 4.81 ERA in six career starts against the Nationals. Castillo, the Mariners' ace, has lost all four of his starts this month despite a respectable 3.42 ERA. 06-26-23 | Tigers v. Rangers -1.5 | Top | 7-2 | Loss | -106 | 8 h 7 m | Show |
Monday's series opener will feature a pair of left-handed starters: the Rangers' Andrew Heaney vs. the Tigers' Matthew Boyd. Heaney (5-4, 3.98 ERA) earned a win in his most recent start, last Monday against the Chicago White Sox. He and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts. It was his first win in June. Monday will mark Heaney's first start vs. the Tigers since the 2018 season when he was with the Angels. In two career starts vs. Detroit, Heaney is 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 10 innings. Due to the Rangers' inability to get timely hits, they left 10 runners on base Sunday. Marcus Semien, Nathaniel Lowe and Jonah Heim all had two-hit days. Boyd (5-5, 5.37 ERA) is riding a two-game winning streak for the first time this season, and the victories came in consecutive starts. In his last outing, against the visiting Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, Boyd allowed two runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts over six innings. Boyd has faced the Rangers once this season, allowing five runs on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts over six innings as he took the loss on May 29 in Detroit. In his career vs. the Rangers, Boyd is 1-7 with a 6.39 ERA in 10 appearances, including nine starts. |
06-26-23 | Twins v. Braves -1.5 | Top | 1-4 | Win | 100 | 8 h 42 m | Show |
The Braves will send Spencer Strider (8-2, 3.93 ERA) against Minnesota's Sonny Gray (4-1, 2.56) in a duel of right-handers. The Braves are coming off a 4-1 road trip, have won 10 of their last 11, and took the final two games of a three-game series against NL Central-leading Cincinnati. The Twins just won two of three from the host Detroit Tigers over the weekend, including 6-3 in 10 innings on Sunday. Minnesota has won four of its last five games. The teams have not met since 2019, when the Braves took two of three in Minneapolis. Strider leads the major leagues with 136 strikeouts and is coming off a bounce-back effort at Philadelphia on Tuesday. He limited the Phillies to one run over six innings after having allowed 13 runs over nine combined innings in his two previous starts. Strider fanned nine on Tuesday to become the second pitcher since 1901 to have 300 strikeouts in his first 35 starts, joining Dwight Gooden. |

06-25-23 | Angels v. Rockies +135 | 3-4 | Win | 135 | 15 h 49 m | Show
Know that the public will be all over the Angels in this one after handing the Rockies a 25-1 loss, Saturday. This number seems to be an obvious trap. |
06-25-23 | Rangers v. Yankees -110 | Top | 3-5 | Win | 100 | 13 h 48 m | Show |
Gerrit Cole improved to 8-1, allowing one run on four hits and one walk in 7.1 innings, as the New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners 3-1 on Tuesday. Cole struck out eight, ending the game with a 2.64 ERA and 1.08 WHIP on the season. |

06-24-23 | Astros v. Dodgers -168 | 7-8 | Win | 100 | 10 h 52 m | Show
After facing adversity for the first time in his young major league career, Los Angeles Dodgers rookie right-hander Bobby Miller will take the mound again Saturday at home against the Houston Astros. Miller gave up just two runs over the first four starts of his career (23 innings) but was roughed up for seven runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings in a loss to the San Francisco Giants last Saturday. With an extended rest, Miller (3-1, 2.83 ERA) now will face the Astros for the first time in his career. The Astros will send their own rookie to the mound Saturday in right-hander Ronel Blanco (1-0, 4.66 ERA). It will be the second consecutive game in which both teams will use rookie starters after Sheehan was opposite Astros right-hander J.P. France on Friday. Blanco, who has never faced the Dodgers, enters off a no-decision Sunday at home against the Cincinnati Reds when he gave up five runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings with two walks and five strikeouts. It was the most runs he has allowed in 19 career appearances (three starts). |
06-24-23 | Diamondbacks v. Giants -105 | Top | 6-7 | Win | 100 | 7 h 1 m | Show |
Right-hander Merrill Kelly (9-3, 2.90 ERA) will look for a National League-leading 10th win as he attempts to derail a surging Giants club that has won 11 of its last 12 games. San Francisco is expected to go the opener route after taking the opener of the three-game series 8-5 on Friday. Kelly will be making his 17th career start against the Giants, against whom he is 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA. The 34-year-old veteran is unbeaten in his last 10 starts, going 8-0 with a 2.69 ERA in that span. He allowed just three hits in each of his past two outings, against the Philadelphia Phillies on June 14 and the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, striking out a total of 14 in 13 innings. The Giants' probable starter is Ryan Walker (2-0, 1.56 ERA) in an opener role. The right-hander allowed just one run in a total of 2 2/3 innings as the starter in wins over the San Diego Padres on Monday and Wednesday. The starts were the first of Walker's rookie season as he has successfully stepped in for opener specialist John Brebbia, who kicked off five wins in eight starts before going on the injured list last weekend. The Giants are currently using openers to fill voids left by injuries to Alex Cobb and Ross Stripling. |
06-24-23 | Mariners v. Orioles OVER 8.5 | Top | 4-6 | Win | 100 | 7 h 39 m | Show |
Kremer (8-3, 4.56 ERA), who would even his career record at 18-18 with a victory, has won his past two starts, including a 6-3 decision against the host Chicago Cubs on Sunday that snapped Baltimore's two-game losing streak. Over those past two outings, Kremer allowed a total of three earned runs on 11 hits in 11 innings, with two walks and 13 strikeouts. Kremer has made three starts in his career against the Mariners, going 0-0 with a 2.81 ERA in 16 innings. Rookie right-hander Bryce Miller (5-3, 3.68 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Mariners on Saturday. Miller has won his past two starts, including a 5-1 decision against the visiting Chicago White Sox on Sunday. He allowed just one run in each of those starts and a combined five hits over 13 innings. He walked three and fanned 12 in that stretch. He has never faced the Orioles. |
06-23-23 | Nationals v. Padres OVER 8 | 3-13 | Win | 100 | 11 h 19 m | Show
The Friday pitching matchup will feature Washington left-hander Patrick Corbin (4-8, 4.89 ERA) and Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove (5-2, 4.22). Neither pitcher faced the other team last month. Over his past five starts, Musgrove is 4-0 with a 2.15 ERA, a 1.091 WHIP and a .243 opponents' batting average. Against the Nationals in six career games (five starts), he is 0-2 with a 5.67 ERA, a 1.407 WHIP and a .283 opponents' batting average. Corbin is 0-3 over his past three starts with a 4.76 ERA, a 2.000 WHIP and a .361 opponents' batting average. In 23 career appearances (18 starts) against the Padres, he is 7-10 with a 4.76 ERA, a 1.478 WHIP and a .285 opponents' batting average. |
06-23-23 | Royals v. Rays -1.5 | Top | 3-11 | Win | 100 | 8 h 22 m | Show |
Like many players on the Kansas City Royals, pitcher Zack Greinke has had a troublesome June as play heats up and the bad teams get even more separated from the good. However, Greinke's job this weekend is straightforward: return home to Florida and beat the club that has dominated the season's first half. The right-hander will start the second game of the four-game series between the Royals and the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday night in St. Petersburg, Fla. Greinke (1-7, 4.81 ERA) is 0-2 with a 7.53 ERA over his June starts against the Miami Marlins, Cincinnati Reds and Los Angeles Angels. Across his 15 starts, the 39-year-old veteran has pitched a season-high six innings just twice -- in his second and fourth outings of the year in April. In 14 1/3 innings in June, he has surrendered 12 runs and 18 hits, including four homers. The opposition is hitting an even .300 against him. Greinke is 4-6 with a 3.41 ERA in 18 career appearances (15 starts) vs. the Rays. He got a no-decision in his latest start against Tampa Bay, a 3-2 road defeat last Aug. 21, when he was taken deep by Christian Bethancourt. |
06-23-23 | Twins -1.5 v. Tigers | Top | 4-1 | Win | 127 | 8 h 15 m | Show |
Left-hander Joey Wentz, who will start for Detroit in the series opener, is coming off his best outing of the season despite taking a loss. Wentz (1-7, 6.82 ERA) held the Twins to two runs on two hits and one walk in six innings in a 2-0 defeat on Saturday. He also recorded a career-best nine strikeouts, but he didn't get any run support. Kenta Maeda was reinstated from the 15-day injured list on Friday to start for the Twins. Maeda (0-4, 9.00 ERA) hasn't appeared in a major league game since April 26, when he surrendered 10 runs in three-plus innings against the New York Yankees. Sidelined by a triceps injury, Maeda made four minor league rehab appearances, most recently on June 16. He pitched 4 1/3 innings for Triple-A Saint Paul and gave up just one run and two hits, though he also issued four walks during the 81-pitch stint. Maeda missed last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. His last victory came Aug. 14, 2021, against the Tampa Bay Rays. |
06-22-23 | Royals v. Rays OVER 7.5 | Top | 6-5 | Win | 100 | 8 h 14 m | Show |
Rays manager Kevin Cash will start the series by rolling out ace Shane McClanahan, who will try to become the majors' first 12-game winner. McClanahan (11-1, 2.12 ERA) is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two career starts against Kansas City and has won all three of his June starts thus far. In an opener role during what could be a bullpen game for Kansas City, right-hander Jose Cuas (3-0, 4.15 ERA) will make his first career start on Thursday after 79 relief outings. Over two appearances against the Rays, both last year, he went 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA. In 1 1/3 innings, he yielded a run on two hits and a walk while striking out one. Cuas likely will be followed on the mound by either Austin Cox (0-0, 0.00 ERA) or Brooks Kriske (0-0, 9.00). |
06-22-23 | Padres v. Giants UNDER 8.5 | 10-0 | Loss | -115 | 5 h 24 m | Show
One of baseball's hottest pitchers and one of baseball's hottest teams go head-to-head Thursday afternoon when the San Diego Padres seek to avoid a four-game sweep at the hands of the host San Francisco Giants. After winning despite never leading until the final pitch of the game a night earlier, the Giants never trailed while running their winning streak to 10 games with a 4-2 victory on Wednesday night. In order to get to 11, they will have to go through Padres left-hander Blake Snell (3-6, 3.48 ERA), who has been almost unhittable in his past four starts. The 30-year-old veteran has given up just one run and 10 hits in his past 25 innings, striking out 39 and walking nine along the way. He struck out 12 in each of his past two outings, against the Colorado Rockies and Tampa Bay Rays. Snell has made six career starts against the Giants, going 3-1 with a 2.51 ERA. Alex Wood (2-1, 4.11 ERA) gets the call after having benefitted from a total of 34 runs of support in his last three starts, including 15 apiece in wins over the Milwaukee Brewers and Los Angeles Dodgers. The 32-year-old left-hander has gone 6-4 with a 3.14 ERA in 21 career games against the Padres, including 15 starts. |
06-22-23 | A's +170 v. Guardians | Top | 1-6 | Loss | -100 | 3 h 53 m | Show |
Logan Allen (3-2, 3.95 ERA) experienced his shortest start of the season, allowing five runs and four hits in three innings during Cleveland's 8-6 win. He struck out two and walked four. Allen was handed a 5-0 lead before he took the mound, but the Padres came back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Oakland plans to send left-hander JP Sears to the mound in the series finale. Sears (1-4, 4.24 ERA) went six straight starts in which he allowed two earned runs or fewer, but that streak ended on Friday when he surrendered four runs and four hits in seven innings during a 6-1 loss to the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. He struck out seven, and for the second consecutive game, did not walk a batter. |
06-21-23 | Padres v. Giants +1.5 | Top | 2-4 | Win | 100 | 11 h 40 m | Show |
The San Francisco Giants will measure just how much juice they have left in their busy bullpen when they go the opener route in search of a third straight win over the visiting San Diego Padres on Wednesday night. The Giants have won nine in a row overall, including the first two contests of the four-game series in walk-off fashion. They received a three-run homer from Mike Yastrzemski in the 10th inning for a 7-4 victory Monday before watching Padres closer Josh Hader walk home the winning run in the ninth for a 4-3 win on Tuesday. Late rallies and game-ending heroics grabbed the headlines, but perhaps the biggest difference in the tightly contested matchups has been the work of San Francisco's bullpen. The Giants have received 12 1/3 innings of three-run ball from six different relievers. The Padres, meanwhile, have tried five different relievers -- including Tim Hill twice -- out of the bullpen for a total of seven innings, during which the Giants have turned seven hits and nine walks into eight runs. The six Giants relievers who have contributed to the wins do not include Ryan Walker (2-0, 1.65 ERA), who was pressed into opener duties on Monday. He will start Wednesday's game as well. Walker allowed one run on three hits in 1 2/3 innings on Monday, his lone career encounter vs. San Diego. |
06-21-23 | Mariners v. Yankees +1.5 | 2-4 | Win | 100 | 8 h 2 m | Show
After George Kirby opened the series, right-hander Luis Castillo (4-5, 2.73 ERA) will attempt to halt his three-start losing streak. Since pitching six innings of one-hit ball against the Pittsburgh Pirates on May 27, Castillo is 0-3 with a 2.89 ERA. Castillo last pitched a week ago against the Miami Marlins when he allowed two runs on two hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 4-1 loss. He walked six. Castillo is 1-1 with a 2.36 ERA in four career starts against the Yankees. Three of those occurred last season when he faced them once as a member of the Cincinnati Reds, then allowed three runs in 14 2/3 innings over his first two outings in Seattle after being acquired at the trade deadline. New York rookie Jhony Brito (3-3, 5.58) will be recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for his 10th career start. Brito last pitched May 20 in Cincinnati when he allowed four runs in four innings. The right-hander never has faced the Mariners. |

06-20-23 | Dodgers -1.5 v. Angels | 2-0 | Win | 117 | 20 h 23 m | Show
Left-hander Reid Detmers (1-5, 4.48 ERA) will be on the mound for the Angels on Tuesday coming off two impressive performances. Detmers earned his first win of the season when he held the Chicago Cubs to one run in 5 2/3 innings on June 8, then had a no-decision after allowing just one run in six innings against the Texas Rangers on Wednesday. Detmers is 0-2 with a 9.35 ERA in two career starts against the Dodgers. Fellow left-hander Clayton Kershaw (8-4, 2.95 ERA) enters on a roll himself, going 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA over his last three starts. It has been some much-needed success for a pitching staff going through some unprecedented struggles. |

The Tigers' scheduled Tuesday starter, right-hander Michael Lorenzen (2-4, 4.23 ERA), has gone at least six innings in seven of his past eight starts. He gave up one or no runs in five of those outings, but his past two outings were rough. The Royals' scheduled Tuesday starter, Daniel Lynch (0-3, 5.79 ERA), also had trouble with the long ball in his most recent outing. The left-hander surrendered four homers while giving up seven runs in seven innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. Lynch is 1-3 with a 5.22 ERA in six career starts against the Tigers. |

The teams will be back at it on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, Texas, for the middle game of the three-game series. Texas will start right-hander Dane Dunning (5-1, 2.76 ERA), while Toronto's pitching plans remained uncertain. For the Rangers, it's about getting the offense back to producing at the level it showed early on this season. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said he doesn't feel his team is pressing with runners in scoring position, describing the club's struggles more as a rough patch. |
