The Saints happily return home after a less than ideal trip to London. They take on the Seahawks and their offense that absolutely exploded in Week 5.
New Orleans is in a very odd and unenviable situation. Granted, Jameis didn’t play in Week 4, leaving backup Andy Dalton to take over but the Saints don’t have a solidified quarterback position, they are 1-3, don’t own their first round pick and probably have one of the worst cap situations in the league.
Things aren’t necessarily looking up for the Saints or Dennis Allen, in his second run as a head coach in the NFL. Allen, the in-house hire after Sean Payton’s sudden retirement, needs to start putting some scratch together or his tenure will be short lived.
On the other side of the coaching matchup is Pete Carroll. While he’s taken fair criticism of his team’s performance in recent years, it’s apparent that he can still get the most out of what he has. After trading Wilson, most people left Seattle for dead but they’ve shown good fight through 4 games.
New Orleans Saints
It remains to be seen whether Jameis Winston will return in week 5, leaving us with the possibility that Andy Dalton is asked to start again. The difference between the two is worth probably at least a point on the line, so keep that in mind as you’re choosing a side.
With Alvin Kamara sidelined, backfield duties were split by Mark Ingram and Latavius Murray. The duo ran effectively behind an offensive line that is 6th in adjusted line yards, and Taysom Hill even posted a rushing touchdown on a red zone carry. Jamaal Williams feasted in week 4 on Seattle’s run defense, and New Orleans will look to do the same.
Chris Olave led the Saints in receiving, adding 4 catches for 67 yards and a touchdown, continuing his torrid pace in his rookie season. It gets even better for the Ohio State product in week 5 as he will face the NFL’s worst pass defense by DVOA.
New Orleans grades out well in defense, which shouldn’t be too surprising with Dennis Allen at the helm. While the Saints have had an average pass defense, the rush defense grades out top 5 in EPA/play allowed. Most teams run all over Detroit, but Seattle received big contributions from their backfield on Sunday, something they may struggle with against the Saints.
Seattle Seahawks
Geno Smith, man. The record isn’t perfect (2-2), but he’s been as good as Seattle could have hoped so far on the young season. As a whole, the offense grades out as the second best in the NFL by DVOA.
Advanced metrics absolutely love Geno and it’s also translated to on-field production. Smith looked like the real deal on Sunday against Detroit’s Salvation Army defense, posting 369 total yards with 3 scores.
Rashaad Penny had his best performance on the young season, finding the endzone twice while rushing for 151 yards. The Kenneth Walker usage has been odd to start the year, but coming off his sports hernia injury, the Seahawks may just be limiting his workload until they’re confident he’s 100%
Though DK had to take a #2 during the game, he’s definitely Seattle’s #1 receiver, leading the team in receptions and yards in week 4. It will be interesting to see how New Orleans divvies out coverage responsibilities, but they were torched by Justin Jefferson, which means DK should still eat.
Like I noted above, the Seattle defense has struggled to put their foot down this year. While maintaining the NFL’s worst pass defense, they’ve not fared much better in their rush defense. They’ll look to take advantage of a Saints offense that is leading the NFL in giveaways.
While Seattle generated no pressure last week, the Lions have rated out as the second best adjusted sack rate allowed. They will certainly welcome a New Orleans offensive line that has struggled with allowing pressure (26th) and may face an immobile Jameis.

The line opened around 4 and has since moved to 6, meaning we’re seeing sharp money hit the Saints. That number might be too high though.
The total intrigues me as well. Between Seattle’s white hot start offensively and a defense that New Orleans could exploit, I like playing the over. It opened around 44 and has since moved to 46, showing that sharps are also expecting plenty of offense. Grab it as soon as possible before it gets to an unsavory number.
