A divisional matchup sees the Rams on the road to face off with the 49ers on Monday Night Football to wrap up week 4 of the NFL season.
Coming into this game, Los Angeles is 2-1 while San Francisco is 1-2. Needless to say, a divisional tilt like this could have some big implications down the line.
Despite picking up the win last week, the Rams did not play particularly well while the Niners looked really bad in their loss. The expectation for both teams is they will look a lot cleaner in this game, but there is certainly no guarantee of that.
The 49ers opened as 1 point home favorite and that number is now up to 1.5. There has been a considerable shift in the total with it moving from 48 to 42.5 in most shops I am seeing.
Among many others, something that is always interesting to watch when these teams meet up is the McVay-Shanahan coaching matchup. Not only are they both great offensive minds, but Shanahan has had a distinct advantage over McVay throughout the years to the point where the Los Angeles coach has been asked if Kyle is in his head.
Los Angeles Rams
The Rams were able to go into Arizona last Sunday and pick up a win over the Cardinals by a score of 20-12, but there are still certainly plenty of questions surrounding this team.
Given the type of offense this team has and the type of defense they were going against, I was expecting them to be more productive on offense against the Cardinals, but I walked away mostly unimpressed by them on that side of the field.
Certainly one positive for them was Matthew Stafford managed to not throw any interceptions which is something he was unable to do in the first two games. His numbers against Arizona did not stand off the page, but he made the plays he needed to do.
One stat that was pretty alarming for this group in their last win was how ineffective the offense was on third down. In total, they finished the day going just 3/8 on that down which simply is not good enough.
Defensively, I was really pleased by what the Rams were able to do against Kyler Murray & Co. It might not have always shown in the number of sacks they recorded, but they did a solid job for the most part of containing the mobile gunslinger and keeping him uncomfortable.
After this unit did not look too good against the Bills and Falcons, it was a good sign to see them perform well on defense against a capable opponent which they will need to carry over when they face a tricky divisional foe in primetime.
Although they got the intended result in week 3, I do not feel that style of game is sustainable for this team over the long haul. If the offense plays as they did against Arizona in this game with San Francisco, I have a hard time seeing them get the job done.
If Los Angeles is really able to generate good pressure on Jimmy G on Monday, then I do like their chances in this one, but if their opponent does a good job of scheming for Donald and co. up front, it will allow the 49ers to open up the playbook which could spell trouble for this secondary. Stafford and the offense should be able to have at least some success against this opposing defense, but the idea of them carrying the team does not seem likely here.
San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers fell to 1-2 on the year with an 11-10 loss to the Broncos on Sunday Night Football in what was a very ugly football game.
Although they did not play a very clean game in that one, it was a game where they absolutely had a chance to take down their opponent, but they simply were not able to execute late in the game the way they needed to.
Being able to win a ball game when you allow just 11 points seems like a pretty reasonable request, but it makes it hard to do when the offense decides to not show up despite having opportunities to put more points on the board.
Denver has a solid defense, but it is absolutely inexcusable for an offense with this coach and skill position players to be held to that few points. If that game is any indication of how they will look on that side of the field, it could be a very long year for this team.
The interception that Jimmy Garroppolo threw was ultimately what did the Niners in on Sunday and he certainly did not play his best game, but there were other players on this unit that did not look great either.
George Kittle did not make much noise in his return as he tallied just 4 catches for 28 yards and Deebo Samuel did have decent numbers but really did not have a ton of plays that really stood out.
These guys will try and get back to what they know, but it does not get much easier when they have to face a tough defense in the Rams. At the end of the day, the players that are relied upon heavily are going to need to execute when called upon or it could very well be more of the same for them.
One of the only positive things from the loss to Denver was the way the defense played. They did a very good job of getting pressure on Russell Wilson and they made an explosive offense look pretty ordinary.
San Francisco will look to have a similar approach on that side of the ball once again when they have to face a talented offense on Monday. Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans will have quite the challenge ahead of him when forming a game plan to stop the defending champs.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Rams are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Monday games.
- Rams are 31-15-1 ATS in their last 47 vs. the NFC.
- Road team is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 meetings
4* Free Week 4 NFL Betting Prediction: Rams +1.5 (-110)
Neither one of these teams was all that impressive in their most recent game, but it is the Rams I am higher on heading into this one.
I still trust that the 49ers are a talented team, but it is very clear there are some key guys on their roster that simply are not game-ready yet which is not a great thing to say when facing a team of this caliber.
Even if the offense for Los Angeles is not totally clicking the way it can in this one, I trust that this defense can do enough against Garroppolo and that offense to keep this game close and maybe win it.
Right now, I can’t trust laying these points with the Niners against this opponent.
