On Tuesday, December 27th, the Phoenix Suns and Memphis Grizzlies meet for the second of four scheduled matches. Memphis will host again on January 16th while the Suns host the final meeting on January 22nd.
The Grizzlies had Phoenix reeling after their 125-100 beat down on December 23rd causing Monty Williams to question his team’s mental fortitude and grittiness.
Both teams were part of the NBA Holiday slate with the Suns losing a heartbreaking 125-128 overtime match to the Nuggets while the Grizzlies’ actions failed to match their proclamations as they fell 109-123 to the Warriors.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Grizzlies winning two of the three contests. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 58 of their 99 matches
Phoenix Suns
Devin Booker started the Christmas game but lasted a mere 4:20 before reinjuring his groin. Without their star, the Suns’ reserves kept Phoenix in the game outscoring the Nuggets bench 58 to 11 with Landry Shamet scoring a career-best 31 points and Damion Lee scoring 18.
Double-double efforts were provided by Deandre Ayton (22 points, 16 rebounds) and Chris Paul (17 points, 16 assists).
Opponents score 111.6 points ranking 10th while they limit their foes’ shooting to 47.0% from the field and 36.5% from the perimeter ranking 16th and 24th respectively.
After the recent swoon, they are averaging 115.5 points per game which ranks eighth, holding opponents to 47.0% from the field and 37.8% from the perimeter ranking 15th and seventh respectively.
Booker (groin), Cameron Payne (foot), Landry Shamet (Achilles), Jae Crowder (trade request), and Cameron Johnson (knee) are out.
Memphis Grizzlies
Having told the world the Grizzlies feared no one in the West, Ja Morant had something to prove on Sunday. Instead, Memphis fell into a quick hole primarily because they couldn’t hit from the perimeter and their best defender was shackled with early foul trouble.
Jaren Jackson Jr. played all of 9:47 in the first half, and less than 11 minutes as the teams hit the final frame. By the time he returned the game was essentially over with him having zero impact. Similarly, Dillon Brooks got into early foul trouble.
Sure, Draymond Green fouled Santi Aldama on three consecutive 3-pointers without penalty but as the visiting team, it’s upon them to adjust if there is whistle disparity.
Despite the loss, there were positives to glean, Memphis won fast break scoring (27 to 8), points in the paint (50 to 26), and were a plus six in points scored off turnovers.
The loss to Golden State might’ve also been a blessing in disguise. If Memphis is serious about aggressively pursuing the title this year it would behoove them to make a trade deadline deal(s) to bolster their bench depth.
Offensively, the Grizzlies score 115.5 points per game (9th) shooting 46.6% from the field ranking (19th), and 34.7% from deep (18th). They allow 111.3 points (9th) with opponents shooting 44.7%. from the field (1st) and 35.6% from deep (13th).
Danny Green (knee) is out indefinitely.

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
Morant & Co. will undoubtedly get all kinds of shade for not backing up their words. For any other team that might be humbling or impact their confidence but that’s not how this team rolls.
I doubt the perimeter shooting is a long-term issue because it was only Desmond Bane’s second game back and the rust of a 17-game absence was evident. Likewise, Jackson is one of the team’s better floor spacers and rebounders so his foul trouble crippled Memphis.
This wasn’t the first time Jackson has suffered from foul trouble so Taylor Jenkins will need to help him figure out a way to contribute and STAY on the court, he’s too essential to their success.
There are no moral victories but Phoenix responded well to their loss versus Memphis Friday. Denver was the first stop of a six-game road trip that features the Grizzlies, Wizards, Raptors, Knicks, and Cavaliers.
It’s likely the team will exercise caution with Booker’s injury so the main question is whether they can rely so heavily on the reserves to keep them in the mix until he returns and now they have to do it without Shamet too.
Their first challenge will be responding immediately to the Grizzlies who embarrassed them Friday. Unfortunately, Memphis has its own statement to make via actions instead of words this time.
