Knicks vs. Spurs Gameday
The NBA Finals got underway on Wednesday as the New York Knicks erased a 14-point deficit to win Game 1 over the San Antonio Spurs 105-95.
New York has now won seven consecutive road games and is unbeaten in their last 12 matches. Four Knicks scored in double digits, led by Jalen Brunson with 30 points, although he needed 31 attempts to reach that mark. Karl-Anthony Towns was arguably the best player on the court, collecting a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds with four assists.
Like their counterpart, the Spurs stars struggled in Game 1 as four players scored in double figures while Stephon Castle needed 16 shots to score 17 points and Victor Wembanyama scored 26 points on 6 of 21 from the field. Wemby also had 12 rebounds, six turnovers, and three blocks.

New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs Odds & Last 5
Head-to-head this season, the teams split their two-game series but played a third time in the midseason tournament, with the Knicks prevailing to clinch the Emirates Cup. That sets up the potential for the first double victory (Cup and Larry O’B) since the inception of the Emirates Cup.
Also of note, the last time the Knicks reached the Finals (1999), they faced the Spurs, who won the title beginning their Tim Duncan era, where they won five championships. In all the Spurs won five titles with the last one coming in 2013-14 (Heat)
New York had a relatively easy road to the NBA Finals, playing clubs that were either inferior or were plagued by injury. To wit, they bested the Hawks in Round 1 by a 4-2 margin and haven’t lost since that series as they swept the 76ers and Cavaliers, both of whom needed seven games to reach the next round.
San Antonio had a tougher route to the Finals, particularly in the Conference Finals against the reigning champions. The Spurs bested the Trail Blazers in a gentleman’s sweep in Round 1, took out the Timberwolves and a hobbled Anthony Edwards 4-2 in Round 2, and needed all seven games to dispel the champs, who were missing two of their top three players.
The oddsmakers are favoring San Antonio to win by 5.5 points with an over/under of 214.5 points.

New York Knicks vs. San Antonio Spurs bottom line:
Oddly, Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson made some mistakes he’d avoided in these playoffs as he went away from the hot hand (Dylan Harper) and didn’t work to get Julian Champagnie more shots in the second half.
Wemby carried the blame for the loss, citing a terrible performance while the Spurs, in general, seemed fatigued in the closing frame (with credit to the Knicks for playing their best two-way ball in the fourth quarter).
Johnson will need to make those adjustments for Game 2, being ready to make tweaks with the flow of the game, and it’s pretty much a guarantee Victor will show up focused and driven to even up the series.

Knicks Spurs Free Pick: Spurs -5.5
Here is my Knicks Spurs free pick.
So much for rust as the Knicks did what they’ve done throughout the postseason campaign, saving their best efforts for late in the contest. They’ll be looking to steal another game now that they lead the series.
Conversely, we’ve witnessed Wemby be a different player following losses so I’d anticipate a much more dialed-in Victor on Friday.
As for the specifics, the Knicks elected to go right at Wemby (a strategy the Thunder avoided), which paid dividends.
Steph Castle had arguably his worst performance of the playoffs and he’ll need to be more aggressive on offense for the Spurs to get back on track.
The numbers confirm the arrival of both sqauds who have feasted this postseason. To wit, New York ranks first in offense (123.3), defense (103.5), and net rating (+19.8). In comparison, the Spurs rank third in postseason offense (115.4), second in defense (104.4), and also second in net rating (+11.0).
In terms of the statistical advantages, the teams played a fairly close contest, with New York winning points in the paint and scoring off turnovers, while San Antonio won fast breaks and rebounding.
I anticipate a more aggressive Spurs squad in Game 2, with Castle and Wemby in particular leading by example. Much will come down to the in-game adjustments, where Johnson needs to be better.
To that end, I do believe the Spurs will bounce back and take the win, and I’m cautiously also picking them to cover the spread.
