San Antonio has defied the odds of inexperience, taking out the Thunder in Game 7 to earn their berth to the Finals.

Head-to-head this season, the teams split their two-game series but played a third time in the midseason tournament, with the Knicks prevailing to clinch the Emirates Cup. That sets up the potential for the first double victory (Cup and Larry O’B) since the inception of the Emirates Cup.
Also of note, the last time the Knicks reached the Finals (1999), they faced the Spurs, who won the title beginning their Tim Duncan era, where they won five championships. In all the Spurs won five titles with the last one coming in 2013-14 (Heat)

These teams both got a bit lucky, which every champion needs along the way to grasping Larry O’B, as they faced teams that were hobbled. But as they lace up the kicks for Game 1, they are both relatively healthy.
Mitchell Robinson has a broken pinkie finger but is expected to play with a brace on his hand, and it’s not like he’s expected to be a primary scorer. Rather, he’ll be utilized to put a big body on Victor Wembanyama, protect the paint, and grab rebounds.
As for the key differences in opponents, the Spurs will have to adjust from playing the paint-happy Thunder to the perimeter-focused Knicks.
Conversely, the Knicks will need to be sharp against the stellar defense of San Antonio and a bevvy of guards all capable of making life difficult for Jalen Brunson.

In this series, the perimeter is going to factor as both teams like to light things up from behind the arc. And, while the Knicks boast the better postseason statistics, San Antonio is not far behind in any of the 3-point shooting categories and will be the toughest perimeter defense New York has faced.
Rebounding favors the Spurs (tops in the postseason), who boast Wemby and guards who’ll crash the glass with a vengeance.
As for the stars, Jalen Brunson will face the deepest team in terms of guards and wings the Spurs can put on him, while Karl-Anthony Towns will have to deal with the DPoY, Wemby.
Conversely, the Spurs haven’t had to deal with a scoring and passing big of KAT’s ilk so far this postseason or the myriad of others who’ll jack up perimeter shots at the rate they do.
The numbers confirm the arrival of both sqauds who have feasted this postseason. To wit, New York ranks first in offense (123.3), defense (103.5), and net rating (+19.8). In comparison, the Spurs rank third in postseason offense (115.4), second in defense (104.4), and also second in net rating (+11.0).
Watch for the pundits to add the Wemby fatigue to the series narrative, but I’ll point out the Spurs will get something in this series they didn’t in the Conference Finals – – two days off in a row on four occasions if the series goes seven games.
New York hasn’t lost since the first round and has the major rest advantage entering Game 1, but will they be able to shake off the rust quickly enough to make this initial match competitive?
As I have throughout the playoffs, I favor the team that is in rhythm in Game 1, and it just works out that the Spurs will also have the home court advantage, so I’ll take them to win and cover in Game 1.
