After signing a giant contract in the offseason, Philip Rivers sets out to prove he’s worth the price the Chargers paid for him as they welcome in the Detroit Lions in Week 1.
This could be one of the most intriguing matches in Week 1 as it features some of the most talented athletes in the NFL.

While Rivers tries to prove he’s worth the signing, the Lions will have to adjust defensively with Ndamukong Suh leaving in the offseason. That sight will be welcomed by Rivers as he won’t have to worry about Suh coming after him from off the end.
Kickoff is set for 4:05 on CBS.
Detroit Lions
While the Lions haven’t made any big splashes in the playoffs in the past couple seasons, they still could be considered one of the most deep and well balanced teams in the league. From QB through their entire offense, they simply have depth and proven players.
However, just because they’re good on paper, doesn’t mean they’ll be good when it comes to on the field. The Lions learned that the hard way last year as they struggled offensively.

The Lions’ offense ranked 19th overall with 340.8 yards a game, but with a bigger and more experienced offensive line coming into this season, Stafford expects better protection and the Lions hope this will get the run game going.
The Lions’ RB situation will have Joique Bell, Theo Riddick and new Rookie Ameer Abdullah all contributing to the cause.
The main key will be the defense and how they react without star Ndamukong Suh. Getting a solid pass rush from the new #1 Haloti Ngata. The Lions ranked 1st overall in rush defense with only 69.3 yards against per game.
San Diego Chargers
The Chargers have a lot riding on Philip Rivers in the future. Rivers was given a 4 year extension worth 84 million dollars in new money with 65 of that guaranteed.
In 2014 Rivers threw for 4286 yards and 31 touchdowns. Rivers had some costly turnovers and the worst times as he threw for 18 interceptions.

The Chargers showed even more trust in Rivers as they have built a solid foundation around him. Rivers will have targets like Antonio Gates, Keenan Allen, Malcolm Floyd and Stevie Johnson to work with.
The main key for San Diego will be the offensive line and how they adjust. Rivers has shown in the past is extreme frustrations after being sacked. Rivers was sacked 7 times in the team’s season finale which was a microcosm of how bad the line was.
