Here’s why I’m backing a Detroit ATS bet below in my Lions Cardinals free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Lions vs. Cardinals Gameday
Detroit needs a road win. Arizona needs answers. Neither team has enjoyed explaining its September record.
The Detroit Lions visit the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium on Sunday, October 11, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 PM ET on FOX. Detroit enters Week 5 at 2-2, while Arizona sits at 1-3.
Dan Campbell’s Lions have won both home games but dropped their two road contests.
That’s an uncomfortable split for a team with playoff expectations. Detroit has enough talent to compete anywhere, but the standings don’t award bonus points for looking dangerous.
Detroit brings the stronger offense, but its road struggles leave Arizona with an opportunity.
Mike LaFleur’s Cardinals are still searching for their first home victory. They’ve lost three straight since winning their opener. Defensive breakdowns have repeatedly spoiled otherwise competitive stretches.
LaFleur needs a cleaner afternoon.
Detroit has won the last four meetings between these franchises. That includes their most recent encounter in 2024, although the personnel has changed considerably.
State Farm Stadium’s retractable roof should keep the weather from becoming a significant factor.
It’s Week 5, Detroit Lions vs. Arizona Cardinals, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Detroit Lions vs. Arizona Cardinals Odds & Last 5
The supplied opening NFL betting odds favor Detroit at -239 on the moneyline, with Arizona returning +199. The Lions are laying 5.5 points, while the Cardinals are getting 5.5. Detroit needs a six-point victory to cover.
The Lions lost 32-26 at Carolina last Sunday.
Detroit moved the football effectively but couldn’t overcome repeated defensive mistakes. The loss interrupted a promising stretch and raised fresh questions about the team’s ability to finish games.
Arizona fell 36-24 to the New York Giants in Week 4. The Cardinals also lost to the Rams and 49ers after opening with a victory over the Chargers. Three consecutive defeats have left little room for another sloppy performance.
The Lions won the most recent head-to-head meeting 20-13 at State Farm Stadium in September 2024.
Detroit has enjoyed considerable success in this series. Previous victories offer encouragement, but they won’t make a single tackle Sunday.

Cardinals Stats
Arizona has scored 87 points through four games, averaging approximately 22 per contest. The offense has shown occasional promise, but consistency remains elusive. Too many possessions have produced less than the Cardinals need.
Rookie Jeremiyah Love has provided a welcome spark. Love leads the rushing attack with 223 yards and a TD. His speed creates opportunities outside the tackles, forcing defenders to remain disciplined.
Detroit will need to respect that threat.
Defensively, Arizona has surrendered 117 points and approximately 351 yards per game. Opponents have repeatedly sustained drives against this unit. Four recovered fumbles have provided some relief.
Budda Baker remains an important presence in the secondary.
Denzel Burke has also contributed an interception. Still, occasional takeaways haven’t compensated for the Cardinals’ larger coverage problems.
Injuries aren’t making life easier.
James Conner and tight end Hunter Long remain on injured reserve. Andrew Wingard has been dealing with a knee issue, while the offensive line has its own personnel concerns. Arizona needs better execution from whoever is available.
Lions Stats
Detroit averages 29.8 points and approximately 389 offensive yards per game. The Lions can threaten defenses through the air and on the ground. That’s a difficult combination when the offense finds its rhythm.
Jahmyr Gibbs has been a major contributor.
Gibbs has rushed for 353 yards and five TD’s through four games. His acceleration punishes poor pursuit angles, while Detroit’s receiving threats discourage defenses from crowding the line.
The defensive numbers are considerably less flattering.
Detroit allows approximately 424 yards per game, including 304 through the air. That’s an awful lot of real estate for a team expecting to contend. Campbell has every reason to demand improvement.
The pass rush has been more encouraging.
Detroit has recorded 15 sacks, with Aidan Hutchinson providing a disruptive presence along the edge. Pressure has been productive, but coverage breakdowns have prevented the defense from consistently finishing possessions.
The secondary remains shorthanded.
Brian Branch and Cade Mays have been ruled out, while Ben Bartch is also unavailable. Avonte Maddox and Payton Turner remain on injured reserve. Levi Onwuzurike has been managing a foot injury.
Campbell may need additional contributions from younger defensive backs.
Detroit’s pass rush can change possessions, but its coverage needs to stop giving those opportunities back.
Lions vs. Cardinals QB Matchup
Jared Goff enters Week 5 with 1,214 passing yards, nine TD’s and zero interceptions. His accuracy has kept Detroit productive despite its uneven results. Few quarterbacks have operated more efficiently through the opening month. Goff threw for 412 yards against Carolina. That performance showed his ability to distribute the football even when the game turns uncomfortable. Strong protection has helped him work through progressions and find favorable matchups.
Arizona’s secondary faces a difficult assignment.
Jacoby Brissett has thrown for 818 yards, six TD’s and four interceptions. The veteran has experience managing an offense, but mistakes have interrupted promising possessions.
Detroit’s edge pressure presents an obvious challenge.
Arizona needs quick throws to Trey McBride and dependable underneath options. Holding the football too long against Hutchinson is an excellent way to make a difficult afternoon worse.
Brissett must recognize pressure before it arrives.

Goff should find opportunities against Arizona’s coverage, particularly over the middle. Sam LaPorta gives him a reliable target, while Detroit’s receivers can stretch defenders across the field. Finishing drives will be as important as moving the football.
Brissett faces additional complications with his receiving group. Marvin Harrison Jr. will miss Sunday amid reports of a pending trade. That increases the importance of McBride, Michael Wilson and Kendrick Bourne. Arizona needs those targets creating separation against Detroit’s vulnerable secondary. Neither quarterback can afford careless turnovers.
Goff has the deeper collection of offensive weapons, while Brissett must compensate for personnel limitations. Both will face opportunities against imperfect defenses.
The difference may come down to protection and decisions under pressure.
Detroit Lions vs. Arizona Cardinals bottom line: Goff’s efficient passing attack faces Arizona’s vulnerable coverage, while Brissett must find answers against Detroit’s pass rush without giving away possessions.

Lions Cardinals Free Pick: Lions -5.5
Here is my Lions Cardinals free pick: I’m laying Detroit Lions -5.5. The Lions haven’t won on the road, and that deserves some respect. It doesn’t mean I’m giving Arizona a free pass for its own problems.
Five and a half is a manageable number when the favorite can establish a lead early. Detroit needs a touchdown margin, not a demolition job. I expect Campbell to push for separation rather than nurse a three-point advantage.
The first half matters.
Arizona has struggled when opponents dictate the terms of the game. If Detroit gets ahead, the Cardinals lose the luxury of staying patient. That’s when a manageable spread starts looking considerably friendlier.
I’m laying the points because Detroit has a clearer path to controlling this game than Arizona has to stopping it.
There’s risk here.
Detroit’s defense has made plenty of opponents look better than they are. I don’t need another Sunday where every comfortable lead turns into a personal stress test. Campbell needs his team playing disciplined football after halftime.
My NFL betting system puts weight on favorites capable of forcing an opponent away from its preferred game plan. Detroit fits that approach here.
The Lions must avoid giving Arizona extra possessions.
I’m expecting a competitive start before Detroit pulls away. A 34-24 finish gets the job done without requiring perfection. My NFL free pick is Detroit Lions -5.5.
