Here’s why I’m backing a Denver ATS bet below in my Broncos Chargers free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Broncos vs. Chargers Gameday
Two AFC West rivals, one winless home team and a favorite that hasn’t won on the road. Somebody’s getting an uncomfortable reminder that division games rarely follow the script.
The Denver Broncos visit the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium on Sunday, October 11, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:05 PM ET on CBS, with streaming available through Paramount+ where carried locally. Denver enters Week 5 at 2-2, while Los Angeles is still searching for its first victory at 0-4.
Sean Payton has seen enough of Denver’s offensive struggles.
The Broncos have won both home games but dropped their two road contests. Payton has reclaimed play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Davis Webb, hoping to provide a spark before another uneven performance turns into a habit. Four games apparently exhausted his patience, which might be a personal record.
Denver needs its first road victory, while the Chargers need considerably more than another respectable effort.
Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers have spent the opening month finding creative ways to lose. Injuries haven’t helped, although the standings aren’t particularly interested in excuses.
Denver won the latest meeting, but Los Angeles captured the previous two. Both coaching staffs understand how quickly this rivalry can swing on a missed assignment. Nobody should expect a comfortable afternoon simply because one team has the better record.
It’s Week 5, Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Chargers, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Chargers Odds & Last 5
The opening NFL betting odds list Denver at -184 on the moneyline, with Los Angeles returning +153. The Broncos are favored by 3.5 points at -104, while the Chargers are getting 3.5 at -117. The total is 42.5 points.
Denver lost 24-14 at San Francisco last Sunday, ending a two-game winning streak. The Broncos previously beat Jacksonville 20-13 and the Rams 30-26 after opening with a loss to Kansas City. Their results have been considerably better in Denver than anywhere else.
Los Angeles fell 30-23 to Seattle in Week 4.
The Chargers have also lost to Arizona, Las Vegas and Buffalo. They’ve been competitive in stretches, but close stretches don’t earn victories. Four consecutive losses leave little room for another afternoon of almost.
Denver won the latest head-to-head meeting 19-3 in January. Los Angeles had taken the previous two contests, 23-20 and 34-27. Both Chargers victories came at SoFi Stadium.
Recent history offers both teams something to point toward.

Chargers Stats
Los Angeles averages approximately 307 offensive yards per game, ranking 21st in the NFL. The Chargers generated 301 yards against Seattle, including 147 on the ground. There’s enough talent to move the football, but sustained production has been elusive.
The offensive line has become a serious concern.
Rashawn Slater is on injured reserve, while Joe Alt and Kayode Awosika are unavailable for Sunday. Trevor Penning has also been placed on injured reserve. That leaves Los Angeles depending on an unsettled group up front, hardly ideal against a familiar division opponent.
Defensively, the Chargers allow approximately 334 yards per game. They’ve collected four interceptions and recovered three fumbles, giving Harbaugh some reason to believe his defense can create opportunities.
Unfortunately, the injury report doesn’t stop at the offensive line.
Derwin James Jr. and Donte Jackson are out, weakening the secondary. Receivers Quentin Johnston and Brenen Thompson are also unavailable, while Ladd McConkey and tight end Charlie Kolar carry uncertain availability. That’s an awful lot of personnel juggling for a team still trying to find its first win.
Broncos Stats
Denver averages approximately 280 offensive yards and 18.5 points per game. Those numbers rank near the bottom of the league. Payton has good reason to demand more from a unit that has struggled to finish drives.
The running game has offered occasional relief.
J.K. Dobbins has contributed 161 rushing yards, while Jaylen Waddle leads the receiving corps with 185 yards and a TD. Denver needs those playmakers involved earlier rather than waiting until difficult passing situations develop.
The Broncos allow approximately 23.5 points and 375 yards per contest. They’ve collected five takeaways, although opponents have still found opportunities to move the football. Those numbers explain why defensive coordinator Vance Joseph has plenty to address.
Nik Bonitto remains a dangerous edge presence, with Zach Allen providing strength along the defensive front. Denver needs more consistent disruption, particularly when opponents attempt to attack downfield.
The biggest concern is in the secondary.
Starting cornerbacks Pat Surtain II and Riley Moss have been ruled out. Pat Bryant has also landed on injured reserve, while Dondrea Tillman is available after missing last week’s game. Denver’s depth will face a meaningful test without its top cornerback pairing.
Denver’s defensive front can create problems, but its depleted secondary cannot afford careless coverage behind the rush.
Broncos vs. Chargers QB Matchup
Justin Herbert enters Week 5 with 816 passing yards, four TD’s and six interceptions. The Chargers quarterback still has the arm to challenge any defense, but turnovers have made a difficult season considerably worse. His decision-making has to improve if Los Angeles expects to reverse its start.
Herbert’s protection will be critical.
Los Angeles needs quick decisions and dependable underneath targets to compensate for its injuries. Longer-developing routes create opportunities for pressure, particularly when Herbert holds the football waiting for something spectacular. That’s a dangerous habit behind a makeshift line.
Bo Nix has thrown for 819 yards, five TD’s and three interceptions through four games. He’s completed approximately 60% of his passes, but Denver hasn’t established a comfortable offensive rhythm. The challenge is producing efficient possessions without asking Nix to rescue every stalled drive.
Payton’s involvement could change how Nix approaches the game.
Expect an emphasis on manageable down-and-distance situations and getting the football out before the pocket deteriorates. The Chargers can generate turnovers, so Nix must recognize coverage rotations and resist forcing throws when his first option disappears.

Herbert has an opportunity to attack Denver’s replacement cornerbacks. Los Angeles will need enough protection for deeper routes to develop. Otherwise, that potential advantage becomes another frustrating exercise in watching pressure arrive before receivers get open.
Nix faces a different assignment.
The Chargers have surrendered explosive plays, creating opportunities if Denver’s receivers win their individual matchups. Nix must identify those openings without becoming careless. His best afternoon may come from taking the available throws rather than chasing spectacular ones.
Neither quarterback needs to carry the entire offense.
The game will be played indoors at SoFi Stadium, eliminating weather concerns. Execution under pressure should matter considerably more than conditions, particularly with both offenses searching for consistency.
Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Chargers bottom line: Denver’s defensive front meets a battered Chargers offensive line in a divisional matchup where quarterback protection and timely execution should decide the outcome.

Broncos Chargers Free Pick: Broncos -3.5
Here is my Broncos Chargers free pick: I’m laying Denver Broncos -3.5. The hook above a FG isn’t exactly a gift, especially with Denver still searching for its first road victory. But the Chargers have given me more reasons to question their ability to finish than Denver has given me reasons to abandon this number.
Denver has won eight of its last nine games outright as a favorite. That doesn’t automatically translate into a cover, but it tells me Payton’s team has generally handled games it’s supposed to win. The question is whether the Broncos can put enough distance between themselves and Los Angeles.
I want Denver attacking early.
Payton taking back the play-calling gives me some confidence that the Broncos won’t spend another half figuring out what they want to accomplish. Establish the run, get Nix into manageable situations and make Los Angeles defend the entire field. There’s no prize for turning a winnable division game into an offensive science project.
I’m betting Denver can create the separation it needs before the Chargers turn this into another fourth-quarter scramble.
The danger is obvious.
Herbert can exploit Denver’s weakened secondary, and that makes laying 3.5 uncomfortable. But the Chargers have been poor against the spread, and their inability to sustain winning football for four quarters keeps bringing me back to the favorite. One impressive drive won’t fix a month of bad habits.
Denver’s path is to play from ahead and force Los Angeles into predictable passing situations. That gives the Broncos opportunities to create the kind of negative plays that turn a close game into a two-score margin.
I’m expecting a competitive afternoon, not a masterpiece. A 24-17 Denver victory fits the way I see this unfolding. My NFL free pick is Denver Broncos -3.5.
