As Titans coach Mike Vrabel and Eagles coach Doug Pederson add years to their NFL experience, they get tougher to gauge in terms of preseason betting. Greenhorn coaches want to be victorious in these early games and establish a winning culture but veterans know this is the time where wins and losses don’t matter – it’s evaluating roster spots that counts.

The reason coaching is so important in this week one of the NFL preseason is because Vrabel went 0-4 ATS last year in the games that “didn’t count” except to bettors. Tennessee went 9-7 in the regular season, missing the playoffs a year after Mike Mularkey took the team to the 2nd round of the postseason. Is Vrabel more intent on winning (or at least covering) in year two?
Tennessee Titans
What bettors likely won’t see in this game is either top tier signal caller get any reps. That includes the injury prone Marcus Mariota of the Titans who threw just 18 passes in the 2018 preseason. Tennessee runs a very conservative offense that was 24th in yards/game in passing in last year’s preseason.
The Titans lost 2018 OC Matt LaFleur who has left to go to Green Bay. They’ll also have two new backups behind Mariota in Ryan Tannehill and Logan Woodside after Blaine Gabbert and Luke Falk took a majority of the snaps in last year’s preseason. Tannehill will get a lot of reps vs. Philadelphia on Thursday and does have history as a starter which does favor the Titans in this one.

The Tennessee defense will actually probably be the deciding factor in covering the +3.5 spread on Thursday – good or bad. The Titans don’t have a lot of big names on that side of the ball as even All-Pro Kevin Byard had a hard time getting recognized by an NFL great. Is this a group of plug-and-play role players or a squad that’s going to get eaten up by the Philadelphia 2nd unit?
Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles have some question marks of their own heading into week 1 of the preseason, namely who is going to replace Nick Foles as the backup to Carson Wentz. Nate Sudfeld, Clayton Thorson, and Cody Kessler are all eager to prove themselves – but none match the pedigree of Ryan Tannehill on the other side of the field.
The Eagles are going to be a great regular season offensive team with the WR depth added by Desean Jackson returning to Philadelphia as well as the addition of Jordan Howard from the Bears as a durable between the tackles back. The preseason roster may be a bit iffy however aside from rookie Miles Sanders out of Penn State and former Ohio State athlete Braxton Miller still trying to prove himself as an NFL-caliber player.

One thing that does give the Eagles value on Thursday is Pederson’s tendency to take the preseason seriously with a 7-5 record in his three seasons at the helm. Then again, Philly has regressed each year under their Super Bowl winning head coach going 4-0, followed by 2-2, and then just 1-3 last season.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Titans +3.5
Tannehill should get a TON of reps in this one and he becomes a difference maker in this very lackluster game in terms of backup star power. The Eagles 2nd and 3rd stringers just don’t impress you and the Titans are built on their defensive scheme – even if nobody knows who the players are.
NFL Free Preseason Score Prediction: Titans 23 – Eagles 16
The Eagles backup QB situation is ugly. Pray for Wentz to stay healthy Philly fans.
