The Giants will be looking to build upon Daniel Jones’ rookie season as he looked promising at times in 2019. He needs to work on ball security, but they also have Saquon Barkley returning to lead their backfield.
The Steelers were kind of a mess last year after the Big Ben injury as they could not see to find a reliable quarterback.
With Big Ben presumably healthy, they will be looking to close the gap on the Baltimore Ravens.
Pittsburgh went 8-8 in 2019, finishing 2nd in the AFC North, while the Giants were 4-12 and finished 3rd in the NFC East.
The Steelers were not a team that had a ton of offense last season, scoring an average of 18.1 points per game. This ranked 27th in the NFL. Their passing offense was obviously their biggest concern, averaging just 186.3 yards per game and ranking 31st.
Their rushing offense was 29th in the league as they only averaged 90.4 rushing yards per game. It was also obvious that they had trouble running the ball, seeing that James Conner their leading rusher and only ran for 464 yards and 7 touchdowns.
With Big Ben back under center, I expect the offense to be much better. Even if he does not throw for 300+ yards a game, his presence will be enough to make the defenses plan differently.
The Steelers defense was actually good in 2019, allowing 18.9 points per game and ranking 6th in the NFL. The were basically middle of the pack in run defense, allowing 109.6 yards per game on the ground.
That will be their key to victory here as they cannot allow Barkley to run all over them.
They were also third in the league at defending the pass, allowing 194.6 yards per game.
New York Giants
The Giants were a very bad team in 2019, but they have a future star in Saquon Barkley. Barkley rushed for 1,003 yards last season and had 8 touchdowns. New York was ranked 19th in the league in rushing offense, averaging 105.3 yards per game.
As for their scoring, New York averaged 21.3 points per game, ranking 19th in the league. Daniel Jones threw for 3,027 yards last season and I expect that number to go up this season with less mistakes.
The defense is going to have to improve as well, considering they allowed 28.2 points per game. This ranked 30th in the league last season. Where they were beat the most was through the air.
They allowed 264.1 yards per game. Even with Big Ben back, I think the Giants can do better in this game, considering Big Ben has not played in quite a long time.
NFL Betting Trends:
- PIT are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games in Week 1.
- Under is 7-1 in PIT last 8 games overall.
- Under is 14-4 in PIT last 18 games on fieldturf.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: New York Giants +5.5
This kind of looks like it will be an ugly game with rusty Big Ben coming back and the whole weird offseason with the pandemic. Saquon Barkley can be a difference maker at pretty much every time, so I am going to lean to the Giants to cover in this spot.
