Vikings vs. Buccaneers Gameday
The Minnesota Vikings take their 2-0 start to Tampa on Sunday for a Week 3 matchup with the 0-2 Buccaneers. Kickoff is set for 4:05 PM ET at Raymond James Stadium, with FOX carrying the game.
Minnesota opened with a 39-22 win over Green Bay before grinding out a 9-3 victory in Chicago. Kevin O’Connell’s club has won with two quarterbacks already, but Kyler Murray has cleared concussion protocol and returns to the starting lineup Sunday.
Murray is back, and Tampa gets the fun job of preparing for an offense it barely has on film.
The Bucs dropped a 33-27 opener to Cincinnati and then lost 23-19 in Cleveland. Baker Mayfield and the offense have moved the ball in stretches, but Tampa is trying to avoid its first 0-3 start since 2009.

These teams know each other well from their old NFC Central days. Minnesota leads the all-time series 33-24, although Tampa Bay has won the last two meetings, including a 20-17 victory in Minnesota to open the 2023 season.

Minnesota is a slight road favorite, with the Vikings laying 1.5 points and the total sitting at 42.5.
The Vikings have taken very different routes to their two victories.
Minnesota scored 39 against Green Bay, then leaned heavily on its defense during last week’s rain-soaked win in Chicago. The Vikings have allowed only 25 points through two games and have generated eight sacks.
Tampa Bay has scored 46 points during its 0-2 start.
The Bucs put up 27 against Cincinnati before being held to 19 by Cleveland. Mayfield has thrown for 398 yards, while Bucky Irving has supplied 134 rushing yards and has also been Tampa’s busiest receiver with 11 catches.
Sunday introduces a major variable for both sides.
Murray played only 11 snaps in the opener before suffering a concussion and missed Week 2. Tampa has spent most of its early preparation studying a Vikings offense that won’t look quite the same with No. 1 back behind center.

Buccaneers Stats
Tampa Bay is averaging 23 points through two games while generating 309 yards per contest. The Bucs have been more productive on the ground than through the air, averaging 4.6 yards per rush.
Irving leads that attack with 134 yards on 29 carries.
He’s also caught 11 passes for 79 yards, giving Mayfield an easy outlet when the deeper passing game isn’t there. Chris Godwin leads Tampa Bay with 86 receiving yards, while Emeka Egbuka has 79.
Mayfield has completed 38 of 65 passes for 398 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
The Bucs have allowed 618 yards through two games, including only 186 on the ground. That run defense gets a different test Sunday because Murray’s mobility adds a second rushing threat alongside Minnesota’s backs.
Tampa has generated three sacks and three takeaways.
The bigger concern this week is personnel. Rookie starters Rueben Bain Jr. and Josiah Trotter have both been ruled out, taking an edge rusher and the team’s leading tackler out of Todd Bowles’ defense.
Tampa has defended the run well, but Murray makes the math considerably less comfortable.
Baker Mayfield practiced fully through his illness, while Jalen McMillan and Jacob Parrish were also full participants during the week. The quarterback will be ready for a Minnesota defense that’s been making life miserable for offenses through two Sundays.
Vikings Stats
Minnesota is averaging 24 points despite producing only 242.5 yards per game. The Vikings haven’t needed huge offensive numbers because Brian Flores’ defense has given them excellent field position and very little scoreboard pressure.
Justin Jefferson leads Minnesota with 11 catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
Aaron Jones has rushed for 145 yards on 31 carries, averaging 4.7 per attempt. He returned to limited practice Thursday after sitting out Wednesday with a knee issue.
Carson Wentz handled most of the quarterback work after Murray was injured in Week 1 and started the victory in Chicago. He has completed 26 of 35 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.
Now the offense goes back to Murray.
Minnesota’s defense has been the steadier part of the operation, allowing 12.5 points per game. The Vikings have surrendered only 459 total yards and held Chicago to three points last week.
The pressure has been constant.
Minnesota has eight sacks through two games, with Dallas Turner leading the team with three. That should get Mayfield’s attention after Tampa’s offense stalled repeatedly in Cleveland.
The Vikings also have two interceptions and have yet to allow an opponent to score more than 22 points.
Murray’s return gives Minnesota a chance to pair that defense with a more dynamic offensive ceiling. If he can avoid the early mistake that ended his Week 1 debut, O’Connell gets the mobility and off-script playmaking he brought Murray to Minnesota to provide.
Vikings vs. Buccaneers QB Matchup
Murray’s Minnesota debut lasted only 11 snaps. His first pass was intercepted, and he later suffered a concussion on a scramble that kept him out of Week 2.
He’s cleared the protocol and will start Sunday.
That leaves Tampa preparing for a quarterback whose 2026 Vikings tape barely exists. Murray’s ability to escape pressure and create outside structure is particularly interesting against a Buccaneers defense missing Bain and Trotter.
Mayfield has had a much larger sample.
He’s completed 58.5% of his passes for 398 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Tampa hasn’t generated enough explosive passing plays yet, but Mayfield still has Godwin, Egbuka and McMillan available around him.

The challenge is Minnesota’s pressure.
Flores has generated eight sacks while allowing just 12.5 points per game, and the Vikings aren’t shy about making quarterbacks identify pressure after the snap. Mayfield has seen enough exotic looks in his career, but identifying them and surviving them are two different jobs.

Murray changes the equation from what Tampa prepared for on Minnesota’s Week 2 tape. His legs add another problem to an offense with Justin Jefferson outside, and the Bucs will be without starting linebackers Rueben Bain Jr. and Josiah Trotter.
Murray’s return gives Minnesota another gear, while Tampa’s defense enters Sunday missing two starters.
Baker Mayfield hasn’t been spectacular, but Tampa has still averaged 23 points and Bucky Irving gives the Bucs a legitimate run-game threat. Minnesota’s defense has been excellent, yet Mayfield has enough weapons to make the Vikings earn another low number.
The 42.5 is the attraction. I don’t need either offense to explode, and Murray’s mobility gives Minnesota a dimension we barely saw before his Week 1 concussion.
Tampa should contribute enough at home to keep this moving.
