Steelers vs. Patriots Gameday
Pittsburgh heads to Foxborough Sunday for a Week 2 matchup with New England at Gillette Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM ET on CBS and Paramount+.
The Steelers are 1-0 after beating Atlanta 20-13 in Mike McCarthy’s regular-season debut. Pittsburgh didn’t exactly set offensive football back 50 years, but the defense made sure 20 points were enough.
Pittsburgh scored 20 and won comfortably enough, which is a pretty familiar Steelers business model.
New England is 0-1 after a painful 13-10 loss at Seattle. The Patriots led 10-0 late in the third quarter before Drake Maye threw three fourth-quarter interceptions and Seattle scored the final 13 points.
That flight home probably had better entertainment than conversation.
The Patriots won 14 of 19 meetings against Pittsburgh from 2001 through 2024, but the Steelers took last season’s matchup 21-14. New England still leads the all-time regular-season series 19-17.

New England opened as a five-point home favorite, with Pittsburgh getting +5. The opening total was 41.5, putting a fairly modest number on two teams that combined for only 33 points in Week 1.
The Patriots have since attracted a little more support.
Pittsburgh’s 20-13 win over Atlanta featured only 264 yards of offense. Aaron Rodgers threw for 221 yards and a touchdown, while the Steelers struggled to generate much on the ground.
The defense supplied the difference.
T.J. Watt had two sacks and returned an interception 35 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown. Jaquan Brisker also picked off Cooper Rush, giving Pittsburgh two takeaways in McCarthy’s first regular-season victory.
New England’s opener was even lower scoring. The Patriots managed 277 yards against Seattle and watched a 10-point lead disappear during a fourth quarter they’d probably prefer not to put in the film-room time capsule.
Patriots Stats From Last Season
New England produced 277 yards and only 10 points against Seattle. The Patriots ran for 109 yards but couldn’t create much through the air once the Seahawks started squeezing the game.
Drake Maye’s fourth quarter was the problem.
Maye completed 23 of 33 passes for 178 yards and a touchdown, but all three of his interceptions came in the final quarter. New England entered that period leading 10-3 and never scored again.
Three fourth-quarter interceptions are an efficient way to turn a 10-point lead into a long week.
Rhamondre Stevenson rushed 18 times for 51 yards and added five receptions for 44. The Patriots need more explosiveness around him now that A.J. Brown has been placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury.
That’s a significant absence.
New England’s defense did its part in Seattle, allowing only 285 yards and 13 points. The Patriots kept themselves in control until the offense repeatedly handed Seattle another opportunity.
Starting corner Carlton Davis III missed practice Wednesday and Thursday with a neck injury. TreVeyon Henderson, meanwhile, was a full participant Thursday after dealing with an ankle issue.
Steelers Stats From Last Season
Pittsburgh’s offense did enough in Atlanta without producing much on the ground. The Steelers finished with 264 total yards, including only 58 rushing yards.
Aaron Rodgers handled the rest.
Rodgers completed 24 of 40 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown without an interception. Pat Freiermuth caught five passes for 46 yards and scored Pittsburgh’s only offensive touchdown.
The defense was considerably louder.
Pittsburgh held Atlanta to 238 total yards while producing four sacks and two interceptions. Watt supplied two sacks and the fourth-quarter pick-six that finally gave the Steelers some breathing room.
Bijan Robinson still found some success.
Robinson produced 173 scrimmage yards and scored Atlanta’s only touchdown, so Pittsburgh wasn’t airtight everywhere. The Falcons simply couldn’t generate enough through the passing game to take advantage.
The Steelers have some Week 2 injury concerns. Michael Pittman Jr. missed Thursday with a foot injury, while Troy Fautanu and Joey Porter Jr. were limited.

Aaron Rodgers opened his Pittsburgh season with 221 passing yards and a touchdown on 24 completions. He didn’t throw an interception, which was particularly useful on an afternoon when Pittsburgh’s own defense kept stealing possessions.
At 42, Rodgers isn’t being asked to win track meets.
Rodgers protected the football in Week 1; Maye spent the fourth quarter donating it to Seattle.
Drake Maye’s final numbers were 178 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions. The ugly part is that all three picks came in the fourth quarter after New England had carried a 10-0 lead deep into the second half.
That’s a nasty box score with some important context.
Maye also rushed seven times for 47 yards and completed nearly 70% of his passes. New England doesn’t need to rebuild him after one bad quarter, but Pittsburgh’s pass rush isn’t an especially friendly place to work through turnover issues.
Rodgers faces a different challenge.
The Patriots allowed only 13 points in Seattle and now get their home opener. If Rodgers again protects the ball and avoids giving New England short fields, Maye may have to manufacture more offense than he did in Week 1.
Steelers vs. Patriots bottom line: Week 1 made 41.5 look generous to Under bettors, but Maye can’t possibly throw every fourth-quarter pass to the wrong jersey, and this number doesn’t require an offensive masterpiece.

Here is my Steelers Patriots free pick: Over 41.5 is my play Sunday in Foxborough. Week 1 gave us only 33 combined points from these teams, so this isn’t the comfortable side of the total. That’s also why we’re getting 41.5 instead of something in the mid-40s.
Pittsburgh’s offense left plenty on the field in Atlanta. Aaron Rodgers threw for 221 yards, but the Steelers managed only 58 rushing yards and converted three of 13 third downs.
There’s room for improvement, and Rodgers has better weapons than that box score showed.
Neither offense needs to become a juggernaut for 42 points to show up.
New England has the same argument after scoring 10 in Seattle. Drake Maye threw three fourth-quarter interceptions, turning a 10-0 lead into a 13-10 loss.
A.J. Brown is out, which hurts New England, but Maye still has enough around him to be better than Week 1. Pittsburgh also gets a Patriots defense that may be without starting corner Carlton Davis III.
The Steelers’ defense can help this bet too.
T.J. Watt already has a pick-six this season, and Pittsburgh forced two interceptions against Atlanta. A defensive score or a couple of short fields would go a long way against this modest number.
I don’t need a shootout. Give me better red-zone execution and something around 24-20.
