Cardinals vs. 49ers Gameday
Arizona heads back on the road Sunday for its second NFC West game in as many weeks, visiting San Francisco at Levi’s Stadium. The Cardinals are 1-1 under Mike LaFleur, while Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers have opened 2-0.
Arizona started with a 26-14 road win over the Chargers before Seattle handed the Cardinals a 31-7 loss in their home opener. The Seahawks scored the final 24 points and held Arizona to 248 total yards.
Arizona gets another NFC West test, because apparently Seattle wasn’t enough fun for one week.
San Francisco has been considerably more comfortable. The 49ers beat the Rams 27-7 on the road before handling Miami 35-13 at Levi’s Stadium, giving them a 62-20 scoring advantage through two weeks.

The 49ers swept Arizona last season, winning 16-15 at Levi’s Stadium before taking the rematch 41-22. San Francisco has won three of the last four meetings, although these division rivals have split their last six.

San Francisco is averaging 31 points and 380.5 yards through two games. The 49ers have scored eight offensive touchdowns while converting 12 of 19 third downs, which is a fairly efficient way to keep the punter from getting overworked.
Purdy has completed 45 of 56 passes for 492 yards, five touchdowns and one interception.
He was nearly flawless against Miami, completing 20 of 22 passes while adding a rushing touchdown. Through two games, Purdy owns an 80.4% completion rate, an 8.8-yard average per attempt and a 125.6 passer rating.
McCaffrey has rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns, while Kaelon Black has added 90 yards. Purdy has chipped in another 59 rushing yards and a score.
San Francisco has spread the football around through the air.
Mike Evans has nine catches for 103 yards and a touchdown, George Kittle has 92 yards and a score, and Deebo Samuel Sr. has nine receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown. Demarcus Robinson has added 84 yards and another score.
The offensive line has done its part, too.
Purdy hasn’t been sacked through 56 attempts. San Francisco’s defense has allowed only 20 points, although its pass rush has yet to record a sack of its own.
Cardinals Stats
Arizona is averaging 16.5 points and 272 yards through two games. The Cardinals have generated 372 passing yards and 186 on the ground, with the offense taking a considerable step backward against Seattle.
Seven points against Seattle was ugly enough; repeating that number Sunday would make this trip very long.
Brissett has completed 44 of 65 passes for 372 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He’s been sacked only three times, but Arizona has produced just two completions of at least 20 yards.
Trey McBride remains his most reliable target.
McBride has 17 catches for 136 yards and both of Arizona’s receiving touchdowns. Kendrick Bourne has added 10 receptions for 86 yards, while Michael Wilson has seven for 74.
The running game hasn’t provided much relief.
Tyler Allgeier leads Arizona with 71 yards, Jeremiyah Love has 70 and the Cardinals are averaging 3.8 yards per carry. Love owns Arizona’s only rushing touchdown.
Arizona’s defense has allowed 649 yards and 45 points through two games. The Cardinals have been better against the pass than the run, but Seattle rushed for 197 yards last week and controlled the second half.
The secondary now has another problem.
Will Johnson could miss the remainder of the season after suffering a neck injury against Seattle. Max Melton also left that game with a toe injury and remained out of practice Thursday, while Garrett Williams was limited as he continues working back from an Achilles injury.
Brissett appeared on the report with a hip issue but practiced fully Wednesday and Thursday.
That’s useful news considering who’s waiting across the line of scrimmage.
Cardinals vs. 49ers QB Matchup
Brock Purdy couldn’t have started much cleaner. He’s completed 80.4% of his passes for 492 yards, five touchdowns and one interception while averaging 8.8 yards per attempt.
Miami barely made him sweat.
Purdy completed 20 of 22 passes in the 35-13 win and added a rushing touchdown. He hasn’t been sacked this season, giving Shanahan plenty of freedom to keep the entire playbook open.
Brissett has completed 67.7% of his passes for 372 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Arizona’s problem has been generating chunk plays. Brissett has only two completions of 20-plus yards through 65 attempts, and now he faces a San Francisco defense allowing 10 points per game.

McBride gives Brissett a dependable answer underneath.
The Cardinals need considerably more around him. Falling behind early would force Arizona away from a running game that already averages only 3.8 yards per carry and put the afternoon almost entirely on Brissett.
Purdy has been surgical.
Brissett needs Arizona to find a few explosives of its own.

Here is my Cardinals 49ers free pick: I’m taking Over 48. San Francisco has scored 62 points through two games, and Brock Purdy has been operating Kyle Shanahan’s offense like somebody forgot to tell him September was supposed to include a little rust.
Purdy has completed better than 80% of his passes with five touchdowns, while the 49ers haven’t allowed a sack. Christian McCaffrey gives San Francisco another problem for Arizona to solve, and a banged-up Cardinals secondary isn’t exactly ideal timing for this assignment.
San Francisco can carry most of this total; Arizona needs to contribute enough to finish the job.
That’s where Jacoby Brissett matters. Arizona scored 26 in its opener, and Brissett has completed nearly 68% of his passes while leaning heavily on Trey McBride. The Cardinals don’t need to trade touchdowns with Purdy for four quarters, but they do need to get into the high teens or low 20s.
San Francisco has too many ways to score, while Arizona should find more offense than it managed against Seattle. I’m comfortable asking the Niners to do the heavy lifting here.
