Here’s why I’m backing a Detroit ATS bet below in my Jets Lions free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Jets vs. Lions Gameday
The New York Jets head to Ford Field Sunday for a Week 3 matchup with the Detroit Lions. Both teams are 1-1, with kickoff set for 1:00 PM ET on FOX.
Aaron Glenn’s Jets opened with a 23-10 road win over Tennessee before losing 20-17 in overtime to Green Bay. New York had its chances against the Packers but couldn’t finish the job.
Now Glenn gets a rather familiar opponent.
Aaron Glenn knows Detroit’s offense pretty well; unfortunately, Detroit knows exactly how he likes to defend it.
Glenn spent four seasons as Dan Campbell’s defensive coordinator in Detroit before taking the Jets job. That makes Sunday’s reunion interesting, although familiarity obviously runs in both directions.

Detroit opened with a 31-30 overtime win against New Orleans before losing 41-31 at Buffalo. The Lions are back at Ford Field with an offense averaging 31 points per game and a defense that has given up at least 30 in both outings.
New York Jets vs. Detroit Lions Odds & Last 5
Detroit is laying around 6.5 to 7 points at home, depending on the book, after opening as high as -7.5. The total has been sitting around 47.5 to 48.
The Jets have been much better defensively than those numbers might suggest.
New York held Tennessee to 10 points and Green Bay to 20, allowing fewer than 200 total yards in both games. The Jets are also one of only two teams that haven’t committed a turnover through the first two weeks.
Detroit has taken a considerably louder route to 1-1.
The Lions scored 31 against New Orleans and another 31 in Buffalo, but their defense has surrendered 71 points and 915 yards. Buffalo piled up 41 points last Thursday, although Detroit still produced 378 yards and four Jared Goff touchdown passes.

Lions Stats
Detroit’s offense has scored 62 points through two games, averaging 31 per contest. The Lions are getting production through the air and on the ground, which is usually a fairly convenient arrangement when the defense is allowing 35.5 points per game.
Jared Goff has thrown for 533 yards and six touchdowns without an interception.
He was excellent in Buffalo, completing 26 of 38 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns. Goff has been especially effective getting the football to Amon-Ra St. Brown, who has 19 catches for 209 yards and four scores.
Jahmyr Gibbs has supplied the other headache.
Gibbs has rushed for 208 yards through two games while catching 11 passes. He ran for 156 yards against New Orleans before Buffalo held him to 52, although he still caught a touchdown pass.
Goff, Gibbs and St. Brown give Detroit enough options that taking away one usually leaves another problem waiting.
The other side of the football hasn’t been nearly as pretty. Detroit has allowed 457.5 yards per game and at least 30 points in both contests, although Aidan Hutchinson already has three sacks and 15 pressures.
The Lions are also dealing with offensive-line injuries. Christian Mahogany, Blake Miller and Tate Ratledge were limited Thursday, while Ben Bartch remained out of practice with a foot injury.
Jets Stats
New York’s defense has been the headline through two weeks. The Jets have allowed only 197 yards per game, holding both Tennessee and Green Bay below 200 while giving up 30 total points.
That’s a pretty useful travelling companion.
Geno Smith has completed 46 of 65 passes for 462 yards and one touchdown without an interception. More importantly, the Jets haven’t turned the football over once through two games, something this franchise hadn’t done to open a season since 1971.
Breece Hall gives New York balance with 131 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Garrett Wilson remains Smith’s primary receiving threat, while Adonai Mitchell gives the Jets another vertical option. Offensive coordinator Frank Reich has continued taking his shots downfield rather than turning Smith into a checkdown machine.
The defense now gets its biggest test.
New York has been No. 1 in total defense through two games and has allowed only 131.5 passing yards per contest. Rookie edge David Bailey already has two sacks and has generated at least five quarterback pressures in each of his first two NFL games.
There are some injury concerns heading into Detroit.
Minkah Fitzpatrick, Kiko Mauigoa, Kene Nwangwu and Mason Taylor missed practice again Thursday. Mitchell was limited by a finger injury, while David Onyemata was placed on injured reserve this week following core muscle surgery.
Jets vs. Lions QB Matchup
Jared Goff has opened the season with 533 passing yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. He has also completed better than 70% of his passes while directing an offense averaging 31 points.
Buffalo couldn’t slow him down last Thursday.
Goff threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns, with St. Brown catching nine passes for 142 yards and two scores. New York’s secondary presents a much different challenge after allowing fewer than 200 total yards in each of its first two games.
Geno Smith has been less explosive but equally careful with the football.
Smith has thrown for 462 yards and one touchdown without an interception, completing 70.8% of his passes. He also has the Jets among the league’s few remaining teams without a giveaway.

Smith knows he may need more than ball security Sunday.
Detroit has scored at least 31 points in both games, so the Jets can’t count on another afternoon where 20 points is enough. The opportunity is there, though, because the Lions have allowed 71 points and haven’t shown they can consistently get off the field.
Goff faces the better defense.
Smith faces the more vulnerable one.
New York Jets vs. Detroit Lions bottom line: New York’s defense gives the Jets a legitimate chance to make this uncomfortable, but Detroit’s collection of offensive weapons makes Ford Field a much tougher place to survive if Goff starts finding the end zone early.
New York Jets vs. Detroit Lions Football Betting Trends
- The Jets have gone 5-3 (62.5%) on the over in their last 8 regular season games as underdogs.

- The Lions are 4-0 (100.0%) on the over in their last 4 regular season games after a win.
- Additionally, in their last 8 regular season games as favorites, the Lions are 7-1 (87.5%) on the over.
- When playing at home, the Lions have a 2-1 (66.7%) straight-up record in their last 3 regular season games.
Jets Lions Free Pick: Lions -6.5
Here is my Jets Lions free pick: I’m taking Lions -6.5. Detroit’s defense has been ugly through two games, but Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and Amon-Ra St. Brown give the Lions considerably more ways to punish mistakes than the Jets have seen so far.
New York’s defense is the reason this number isn’t automatic. The Jets have allowed fewer than 200 yards in each game, and Aaron Glenn knows Detroit’s personnel about as well as any visiting coach possibly could.
The Jets can make Detroit work for it; eventually, Goff has too many weapons for me to fade at Ford Field.
Geno Smith has protected the football, but New York is averaging only 20 points. That’s a difficult pace to trust if Detroit gets into the upper 20s, especially with the Lions coming home after allowing 41 in Buffalo.
I’ll lay the number and trust Detroit’s offense to create the separation.
Take the Lions -6.5.
