It was a successful week one for both sides as they each started out with a win. The Raiders beating the Carolina Panthers and the Saints beating the over-hyped Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Saints looked like the better team in their game, mainly because of an improved look on defense. Thought the Raiders looked like a team that could consistently move the ball, especially with their running game.
New Orleans Saints
This was a weird game as we did not see the Saints dominate like they tend to do. At least not on the offensive side of the ball. They did not get a normal game from Drew Brees either, as he threw for just 160 yards. He did however, throw two touchdowns and did not turn the ball over.
They were not really effective running the ball either, picking up just 82 yards on the ground. Kamara had just 16 yards rushing, though he did score on the ground and caught five balls for 51 yards and a receiving touchdown.
What was more impressive was their defense. Sure they allowed 310 total yards, but they picked off Tom Brady twice, returning one for a touchdown. With an aging Brees under center, they are likely going to need to continue this level of defense.
Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders began the Las Vegas Era by beating the Carolina Panthers 34-30. Josh Jacobs was the standout in this game, picking up 93 yards on the ground with three rushing touchdowns. Derek Carr had a solid game as well, throwing for 239 yards an one touchdown.
Other than Jacobs, Henry Ruggs had a nice NFL debut, going for 55 yards receiving, while Jacobs was able to also compile 46 yards.
Defense for the Raiders was not exactly great, considering they allowed 388 yards. Most of these yards came through the air, 280 of them to a former backup quarterback. Now having to face Drew Brees and Michael Thomas, plus the other weapons on that Saints offense is going to be a problem for this secondary.
They also allowed 128 rushing yards, including 96 to Christian McCaffrey. It is true that Kamara did not have a good rushing game against the Bucs, however Las Vegas has a much worse rushing defense in general, so it is likely the Raiders will struggle here as well.
NFL Betting Trends:
- New Orleans are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- New Orleans are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games against Las Vegas.
- New Orleans are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games on the road.
- New Orleans are 7-1 SU in their last 8 games played in September.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: New Orleans Saints -5.5
The Saints defense impressed me greatly against the Bucs, especially with their ability to force turnovers. They have a very good rushing defense as well, so I think they will be able to at least limit Jacobs on the ground. I look for the Saints to build upon that game against Tampa Bay and will take them to win this game and cover.
