Week 5 of the NFL season sees the Chargers visiting the Browns at 1:00 ET from FirstEnergy Stadium.
Both of these teams come into action with records of 2-2 and will look to walk away with a winning record when all is said and done.
Los Angeles did a good job of bouncing back in their most recent game while Cleveland dropped a game to a very beatable team.
The Chargers did open as a 2-point favorite on the road and that number is now up to 3 which I can’t say is all that surprising. There has been a slight change in the total with it going from 48 to 47.5 for now.
Los Angeles Chargers
After looking horrible against the Jaguars in the previous week, it was critical that the Chargers bounced back and took care of business against a very bad Texans team and they did just that on Sunday with a 34-24 win.
They did allow the game to get a little more interesting than it should have in the end, but they were still able to make enough plays when it mattered to improve their record to 2-2.
Although still banged up, Justin Herbert did a good job of putting his poor performance against the Jaguars aside and he played at the level we are used to seeing him perform at.
The third-year gunslinger finished the day going 27/39 for 340 yards and 2 touchdown passes. From early on, it was pretty clear the opposing defense had no answers for him so he continued to expose them time after time.
With Keenan Allen out of the game, lots of other receivers had to step up and that is exactly what happened as they got plenty of contributions from their pass catchers.
It was Mike Williams who really stood out with 7 catches for 120 yards while Gerald Everett and Austin Ekeler also chipped in nicely for them.
The defense still had its fair share of struggles against the Texans, especially with their run defense which has been an area of concern for a while now. Dameon Pierce had plenty of success against them on the ground to the tune of 14 carries for 131 yards.
As they head to Cleveland for week 5, they should definitely be able to keep up their production on offense, but the defense is just going to have to step up more than they have when they face a talented Cleveland offense.
If their run defense plays as it has in past games, it could be a very long day for this unit when they try to slow down both Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt.
Cleveland Browns
The Browns were unable to use the extra days off to come up with a victory over a beatable Falcons team on Sunday as they dropped 23-20.
Cleveland went into the 4th quarter with a 13-10 lead, but they were unable to hold off Atlanta who outscored them 13-7 in the last quarter to get the job done.
Jacoby Brissett was ok at times and was able to make some nice throws, but he was still not overly effective and struggled with accuracy with just 21 completions on 35 attempts.
As is the case often with this offense, Nick Chubb was the focal point on Sunday. He finished the afternoon with 19 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown.
For as important as a strong ground game is in the NFL, it will still only get a team so far. At some point, the quarterback still has to be able to make consistent throws when it matters most and that just did not happen enough in this one.
When you look at a lot of the stats, the Browns were better in a lot of key categories and still were unable to get it done. This is certainly one they will be kicking themselves about for a while.
With their loss in Atlanta, they now have a record of 2-2 and are tied with Baltimore and Cincinnati. A lot of people thought it would a tight division this season and it looks like that could be true in the end.
Cleveland has not exactly played a tricky schedule through their first four games, but that changes a lot when they have to face a Chargers team that has the ability to challenge them in plenty of different ways.
If the Browns are able to have success in their running game like they have had previously and they do not have Brissett do too much, they should like their chances of keeping it close. However, if Los Angeles is somehow able to really contain them in that area and they force their QB to make play after play, then it could get out of control for them because I do not see this squad being able to match the Chargers point for point if it becomes one of those games.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Chargers are 10-24-1 ATS in their last 35 after scoring 30 or more in their previous game.
- Chargers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following an ATS win.
- Underdog is 7-1 ATS in their last 8 head-to-head meetings.
- Browns are 1-6 SU in their last 7 games vs. the AFC West.
4* Free Week 5 NFL Betting Prediction: Browns +3 (-110)
It is clear who the better team is in this spot, but I do not see it being an easy win for the Chargers.
Look, we know how talented Los Angeles is on offense and I expect them to keep that up on Sunday, but I still do not have a ton of confidence in their defense when facing off with the Browns here.
Cleveland has two running backs that are more than capable and I would expect them to use those guys often in order to expose a clear weakness of their opponent.
I would say it likely still ends with a win for the Chargers, but I see this being a close game with the better quarterback making enough plays in the end.
