A battle in the AFC West takes place in the opening week when the Chargers play host to the Raiders.
Both teams remember what happened when they met last time and there is no question Los Angeles will be looking for some revenge here.
There has been a lot of chatter about this division and there is no better way to start the season than having these two rivals go at it.
The Chargers are currently a 3.5-point favorite at home with a total of 52.
New coach Josh McDaniels will get challenged right off the bat when his team tries to slow down Justin Herbert and a very talented Chargers team.
Las Vegas Raiders
The Raiders did not end their season a year ago how they would have liked with a loss to the Bengals in the playoffs, but there is a lot of optimism surrounding this group for 2022.
This is a team that has seen a lot of change take place within their organization as Josh McDaniels is the new head coach to go along with them acquiring key players like Davante Adams and Chandler Jones who they hope will help this team out right away.
Adding Adams to this roster makes a talented offense a lot more explosive and it also gives Derek Carr the opportunity to throw the ball to his former teammate at Fresno State. If they are both on their game, this could be a very dangerous duo.
Bringing in a guy like Chandler Jones was a smart move on their part because this is a defense that needs a lot of work and he is a guy that should be able to help improve them on that side of the field. Of course, one man is not going to solve all problems for them but being able to bring in a guy like that who can really get pressure on the quarterback is huge for them.
There is no doubt the expectations are quite high for this Raiders team and this really has to be the year they prove something to people. They have the pieces around them to be a very good team, but they still have to go out there and execute at a high level for a whole season.
Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles did miss out on the playoffs a season ago, but there were still some positives to take away from what they did and there is certainly reason to feel they can have a strong campaign in 2022.
Justin Hebert has looked excellent in his first two years in the NFL and he will be looking to elevate his game to an even higher level and lead his team to the postseason.
Similar to the Raiders, these guys also improved their team in the offseason and it mainly come on the defensive side as they were able to acquire J.C. Jackson and Khalil Mack who will look to leave their marks right away.
Being able to have guys like that on their defense is a big deal for them because this is a defense that drastically needed to be improved. All too often last season, they simply did not play well enough on that side of the ball and it really cost them in plenty of games.
When they faced off with Las Vegas a year ago, they saw mixed results. In the first game at home, the defense looked quite good and they beat them by a score of 28-14, but that was not the case in the last game of the regular season as they dropped 35-32 in that wild finish.
This Chargers team is a lot like the Raiders in the sense that they have the talented players necessary to play really good football, but they still have to show they can stack up that sort of play in a very competitive division and conference.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Over is 7-1 in Raiders’ last 8 games in September.
- Over is 4-1 in the Raiders’ last 5 vs. the AFC West.
- Over is 6-0 in Chargers’ last 6 games overall.
- Over is 4-0 in Chargers’ last 4 games as a favorite.

Similar to when they met to cap off the 2021 regular season, I do not see this being a game where there is a shortage of points.
Despite both teams making improvements to their defenses, I still have questions for them on that side of the field.
I still wonder about the run defense for the Chargers and I have question marks about the Raiders consistently being able to slow down Herbert and that potent air game.
Given how these teams are set up to play, I think this is a ball game that lends itself to plenty of offense when everything is settled.
