Kansas City Chiefs
The Chiefs lost their second game in a row for the second time in the Patrick Mahomes era Sunday at home against the Texans. Consecutive home losses have them at 4–2.
The Texans’ defense intercepted Mahomes for the first time this season and limited him to a season-low 273 yards in the 31–24 victory.
It was the second time this season a defense held Mahomes under 315. He was under 300 two weeks ago, in Kansas City’s first home loss to the Chiefs.
He’s been dealing with a sprained ankle he suffered in Week 1 and appeared to re-injure it early in the second quarter Sunday.
Mahomes started fast with a 46-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill, who was playing in his first game since Week 1, and a 14-yarder to Damien Williams. The Chiefs led, 17–0.
The Texans got a field goal but them Mahomes took a hit from Benardrick McKinney on an incomplete pass and got up limping.
At that point, he was 10/16 for 189 yards in just over a quarter of play. After that he went 9/19 for 84 yards and his first pick of the season.
Down 17–0, the Texans scored the next 23 points. Deshaun Watson threw a touchdown to Duke Johnson Jr. and Carlos Hyde ran for another. Watson ran for the last two, the first of which completed the 23–0 run and the second of which won it for Houston in the fourth.
The Chiefs entered the fourth with a one-point lead after Mahomes’ second touchdown strike to Hill, and third overall, in the third stopped the bleeding.
Denver came on against Tennessee in one of the late games and pitched a shutout, 17–0.
The Broncos scored in every quarter: three field goals from Brandon McManus and a touchdown in the third quarter by Phillip Lindsay, who finished the afternoon with 70 rushing yards.
But Joe Flacco continued to look like a quarterback who is going to specialize in winning games in which his defense can hold the opponent to, say, a touchdown max. He went 18-of-28 for 177 and a pick. Courtland Sutton’s talent continues to slowly waste away; he caught four balls for 76 yards.
Denver’s defense is fast making up for its terribly slow start. It sacked Tennessee quarterbacks seven times on Sunday and I say quarterbacks with an “s” because the Titans pulled Marcus Mariota after he started the game 7/18 with two picks.
Ryan Tannehill came on and cleaned things up a little bit, going 13-for-16, but he didn’t lead a scoring drive and the Broncos picked him off once as well.
NFL Betting Trends:
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Under 50
Mahomes only gets three days of rest before going on the road against a hot defense. The Chiefs’ D has to believe it’s time to it to go out and win a game.
It most certainly against this offense of Denver’s. I’ve got this one going under 50 in one of my favorite plays of the week.
