Sunday’s meeting between the Jaguars and Chargers features a couple of 1-win teams, but Los Angeles seems head and shoulders above Jacksonville in this tilt.
L.A. is not only coming off a bye week, each of the Chargers losses this season have been within one score. The Jags got embarrassed 34-16 at home to Detroit last week, and have allowed at least 30 points in five straight games.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Jacksonville is at the turning point in their season, losers of five straight and among 8 other teams with one win on the season. The Jets are winless, but the Jaguars could conceivably start to tank for the #1 draft pick next season.
In many ways the Jags are already tanking, dropping every game since their 27-20 win over the Colts in week one. The Jacksonville offense has been held to 16 points or less in three of the last four.

Is the Gardner Minshew act wearing thin already in Jacksonville? The Jaguars QB has thrown for 300+ in 3 of the last 5, but they’ve all been Jacksonville losses. Minshew has 40+ pass attempts in each of the last three games.
Minshew does get a bad rap, mostly because the Jaguars defense is allowing 30+ points per game and is 26th or worse in total yards, passing, and rush yards allowed.
Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers also haven’t won since their opener, a 16-13 win at the Bengals. Los Angeles has been close though with their biggest defeat a 38-31 loss at Tampa Bay two games ago.
Los Angeles could turn things around quickly, as they’ve looked good since switching to Justin Herbert after the Tyrod Taylor injury. Herbert has 260+ yards in four straight starts, and looks good lately with 7 TD to 1 INT the last two weeks.
L.A. has a top 10 rushing defense, but they’ve allowed 30+ points in two straight games. Tom Brady had a 369 yard, 5 TD game against the Chargers in week 4, and Drew Brees followed that up with 325 yards two weeks ago.
The Chargers are going to force Jacksonville to be very one-dimensional in this one. The Jaguars are 29th in the league in rush yards/game, meaning a lot of pressure is going to be put on Minshew on Sunday.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Jaguars are 2-5 ATS last 7 road games
- Jaguars are 0-4 ATS last 4 overall
- Over is 7-3 in Jaguars last 10 vs AFC
- Chargers are 2-6 ATS last 8 as a favorite
- Under is 19-7 last 26 Chargers home games
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Chargers -7.5
There’s not a whole lot to like about Jacksonville right now, especially traveling across the country against a Chargers team that is better than their record indicates.
Los Angeles is hungry to get their first win with Herbert as a starter. The Chargers defense isn’t as bad as they’ve looked the last two games.
