Week 2 of the NFL sees an AFC South matchup with the Jaguars hosting the Colts on Sunday afternoon.
Over the years, it has been well documented that the Colts have not always had the most success in Jacksonville and that is how their season ended a year ago with a 26-11 defeat.
With a new quarterback, Indy will look to change that around, but it likely will not be an easy task when they have to face an improving team with a real head coach.
The road team opened as a 4.5-point favorite in this contest but is down to 4 across the board.
Both of these squads will be looking to get their first win of the season in this divisional tilt after not playing their best brand of football in the opening week.
Indianapolis Colts
I get that it is just one game, but the Colts should be kicking themselves for having to walk out of the first week with a tie against the Texans as opposed to a victory.
Although they would have preferred it never got to overtime against a team like Houston, they had a chance to secure the win with a 42-yard field goal from Rodrigo Blankenship, but that did not happen and he no longer is a kicker for the Colts.
What we saw on Sunday from this team is a good example of them playing down to their competition. They played a very beatable squad but really looked lifeless in a good part of the game despite picking it up a bit in the fourth quarter.
In his debut for Indianapolis, Matt Ryan went 32/50 for 352 yards with 1 touchdown pass and 1 pick. Jonathan Taylor was quite effective as he ran the ball 31 times for 161 yards and a touchdown, but it still did not translate to as many points as they would have liked.
Defensively, I thought they were solid last time out. It certainly could have been better, but they mostly were able to contain Mills & co. which is not exactly saying a lot.
As they hit the road to face off with another divisional foe, they are once again the better team and can certainly win, but they definitely have to play a sharper brand of football than they did last time against a team that is talented.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Similar to the Colts, the Jaguars found themselves behind early in the game on Sunday and were not able to get it done in the end despite coming back a little bit in the second half.
The defense had some mixed results against the Commanders as there were times they forced Carson Wentz to make bad decisions which led to 2 interceptions, but he also threw 4 touchdowns against them and over 300 yards.
One thing I did like about the defensive unit was the run defense. Overall, they did a good job of keeping Antonio Gibson in check and not letting him really dominate the game on the ground. However, he was much more effective in the passing game with 7 catches for 72 yards.
Trevor Lawrence showed some glimpses of positivity on Sunday, but there were also times when he did not look so great. I am not totally opposed to him throwing the ball 42 times, but the accuracy was a problem in this game which is something he simply has to get better at if he is going to be the quarterback a lot of folks think he will be.
Wide receiver Christian Kirk had a big day against Washington with 6 receptions for 117 yards while Zay Jones had 6 catches for 65 yards. If those two can stay healthy, there is no question they will both be key weapons for Lawrence in his second year.
Jacksonville will be in for a challenge when they host a Colts team that is not happy with their week 1 performance and certainly has some revenge on their mind as they know playing at TIAA Bank Field has not always gone smoothly for them.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Colts are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. the AFC South.
- Colts are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 meetings in Jacksonville.
- Home team is 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 head-to-head meetings.
- Underdog is 5-0 ATS in their last 5 head-to-head meetings.
4* Free Week 2 NFL Betting Prediction: Jaguars +4 (-110)
Certainly, something that was effective for the Colts in the opener was their run game and I would once again expect them to lean heavily on Taylor in this one.
With the exception of Pittman, there are not a ton of other receivers that Ryan has at his disposal who really stand out which is something the Jags have to take advantage of.
Although they have a very long way to go, it is very clear Jacksonville has some playmakers on this team and I do not view them as being overmatched by their opponent in this game.
It would not surprise me if the Colts are too much in the end, but the 4 points are too many for me to lay on the road with a team I do not have a ton of faith in.
