Two teams with two very different sets of expectations heading into the 2020 season. Indy knows it can win the division but Jacksonville is playing for next year…and beyond.
I am actually more curious about the Jags here. Are they going to be hapless, or just bad?
Indy should be solid but in a tight division race they can’t afford a slow start.
The Colts finished with just seven wins a year ago, their lowest total in some time. As a result they were very active in the offseason, most notably bringing in Philip Rivers to helm the team. He wasn’t amazing but I am not sure that Jacoby Brissett was the problem with the team a year ago.
On defense they added DeForest Buckner to the defensive line. He is coming off an All-Pro season and should make it even easier for Justin Houston to do his thing off the edge. Xavier Rhodes at corner might improve the secondary as well.
You ca criticize Brissett all you want but the dude did not have much to throw to last season. TY Hilton is very shifty but he was injured a chunk of the year and the receiver group was not very deep. I like that that drafted Michael Pittman there.
Third year linebackers Darius Leonard and Anthony Walker are about as good a duo as there is in the NFL. They rarely miss a tackle.
The Philip Rivers era is upon us. I like the depth they now have at that position but I am not really sure that is an upgrade.
The Jags are not going to be good this season. They recently made news by getting rid of Leonard Fournette but even though he has talent he was not going to be a difference maker for this group.
Gardner Minshew is a fun player and an easy guy to root for. I think he can play in the league but he is never going to be elite. He generally avoids mistakes though and can take a hit. He will suffer a bunch this season.
It is going to be a new offense this season, led by Jay Gruden. It was his offensive game-planning skills that got him the Washington job and he can be creative because there are very low expectations. The receiver group is not terrible.
The defense can be a lot better this season even though they jettisoned a bunch of veteran players. Joe Schobert can be a tackling machine in th middle and CJ Henderson can be their big dog at cornerback.
Last year’s top pick Josh Allen did not disappoint. He had 10.5 sacks last season and is he blows up a play or two at the right time here this one could be close.
NFL Betting Trends:
- IND are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 vs. AFC South.
- Over is 7-3 in IND last 10 games as a favorite.
- Over is 18-8 in IND last 26 games on grass.
- JAC are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games overall.
- Under is 9-4 in JAC last 13 home games.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Jaguars +7.5
That hook likely makes all the difference in this one. I think the Jags are going to be bad this season but right now they can bask in the “anything is possible” space.
Plus, the Colts might not have a read on what they are going to do on offense for a few series. Maybe they sneak some points on the board.
