The new year will kick off with an AFC South battle as the Houston Texans travel to the Music City to take on the Tennessee Titans. A week ago, it looked as though this game would determine the winner of the division, but a lot has changed since then.
The Titans were defeated by the last place Jacksonville Jaguars last week, knocking them out of playoff contention. The Texans, on the other hand, narrowly defeated the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
It was their third straight win, and with the Titans loss, it secured the division title for them.
Houston has been one of the most unpredictable teams in the NFL this year. Even with an anemic offense and overall poor play, they have consistently led the AFC South.
Quarterback Brock Osweiler proved that he was not worth the big contract he was given and was finally benched two weeks ago while trailing the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was replaced by Tom Savage, and the offense has been more stable over the last two weeks.
Savage will be the quarterback for Houston in this game and going into the playoffs. So far, he has completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 436 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.
The Texans have lived by their defense this year. They allow only 305.7 yards per game which ranks 1st in the NFL.
The Titans had been one of the most surprising teams in the NFL in 2016. After winning only five games over the last two years, the Titans looked like a completely new team under first-year head coach Mike Mularkey.
Before last week, they were poised to win the division and make the playoffs for the first time since 2010.
However, last Sunday could not gone much worse, as they lost Marcus Mariota for the season, lost the game 38-17 to a last place team, and lost a shot at the playoffs and the division title.
With Mariota out, Matt Cassel will get the start at quarterback, his first since 2014. However, the Titans still have the 3rd best running game in the NFL, averaging 138.9 yards per game on the ground.
DeMarco Murray has had a Pro Bowl year, racking up 1,266 yards and nine touchdowns. Defensively, the Titans are 5th best against the run (91.1 rushing yards allowed per game) but are 31st against the pass (270.9 passing yards allowed per game).
NFL Betting Trends:
- Texans are 5-0 ATS in last 5 games against Titans
- Titans are 5-15 SU in last 20 home games
- Titans are 6-17-2 ATS in last 25 home games
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Texans +2.5
Before Mariota went down, it looked as though Tennessee was clearly the better team. Even though they are mainly a running team, losing your franchise quarterback means the offense will be completely different and one-dimensional.
The Texans are already good against the run, and will be even better when they know that is all they have to defend.
NFL Free Score Prediction: Houston 20 – Tennessee 17
Even though the Houston offense is not going to blow anyone away, they have been more stable with Savage under center. As long as he continues to manage the game well and take care of the ball, they should be able to go into the postseason with a win.
