2026 NFL Handicapping – Houston Texans vs Los Angeles Chargers
Here’s why I’m backing the bet below in my Texans Chargers free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Texans vs. Chargers Gameday
The Houston Texans visit the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Sunday, November 8, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:05 PM ET on CBS.
DeMeco Ryans brings his 2-5 Texans into Week 9 following their bye. Houston has won twice on the road but hasn’t managed a home victory.
Both teams entered the season expecting playoff football, and neither has delivered anything close.
Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers are 0-7, the NFL’s only remaining winless team. They’ve lost four straight at SoFi Stadium this season.
Houston’s coaching staff includes offensive coordinator Nick Caley and defensive coordinator Matt Burke. The Texans have struggled to turn competitive performances into victories.
Harbaugh has Mike McDaniel running the Chargers’ offense and Chris O’Leary directing the defense. Those changes haven’t produced the improvement Los Angeles expected.
The Chargers have lost 10 consecutive games dating to last season. Harbaugh’s club is running out of time to salvage anything meaningful from 2026.
Houston is trying to recover from a disappointing first half, too. Both teams have enough talent to be better than their records suggest, but potential doesn’t count in the standings.
It’s Week 9, Houston Texans vs. Los Angeles Chargers, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Houston Texans vs. Los Angeles Chargers Odds & Previous Games
Houston opened at -223 on the moneyline, with Los Angeles returning +185. The Texans are favored by 4.5 points at -115, while the Chargers are getting +4.5 at -107.
The opening total is 41 points. Both offenses have struggled to maintain consistent production, which helps explain the modest number.
Houston last played in Week 7, losing 27-21 in overtime to the Giants.
The Texans previously defeated Jacksonville 34-31 and Tennessee 26-3 but lost to Dallas 34-30 and Indianapolis 19-17.
Los Angeles fell 24-9 to the Rams last Sunday. Earlier losses included Kansas City, 22-6, Denver, 23-17, Seattle, 30-23, and Buffalo, 24-16.
The Texans won the last regular-season meeting 20-16 in December 2025. Houston also eliminated Los Angeles 32-12 in the January 2025 Wild Card round.
The Chargers lead the regular-season series 6-4, although Houston has won three of the last four meetings. Los Angeles earned a 34-24 victory in 2022.
The Chargers won this year’s preseason meeting 27-7. That result won’t carry much weight Sunday, when both teams have considerably more at stake.

Chargers Stats From Last Week
Los Angeles averages 14.1 points per game, ranking last in the NFL. The Chargers generate 288.3 offensive yards per contest, placing them 28th.
The running game produces 111.1 yards per game. Omarion Hampton leads the backfield with 309 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
Ladd McConkey has 286 receiving yards and one touchdown. The passing offense averages 177.1 yards, ranking 26th.
Los Angeles has committed 17 turnovers, the most in the league.
Giving opponents that many extra opportunities is an excellent way to remain winless.
Defensively, the Chargers allow 323 yards per game, ranking 13th. Their pass defense has been stronger, surrendering 198.4 yards per contest.
The Chargers allow 124.6 rushing yards per game. Opponents have found more success attacking the ground defense than throwing against the secondary.
Derwin James Jr. remains on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Deane Leonard and Kendall Williamson are out Sunday, while David Njoku and Denzel Perryman are doubtful.
Texans Stats From Last Week
Houston averages 338.1 offensive yards per game. The Texans rank seventh in passing offense at 253.4 yards but 29th in rushing at 84.7.
The Texans score 23.6 points per contest. Their passing attack has produced considerably more than their ground game.
Houston allows 24.3 points and 342 yards per game. The defense has been more effective against the run, holding opponents to 98 rushing yards per contest.
Will Anderson Jr. has recorded 7.5 sacks, helping Houston generate 21 as a team. That pressure gives the Texans a dangerous advantage against vulnerable offensive lines.
Houston has committed only three turnovers, tied for the fewest in the NFL. Protecting the football has been one of the team’s few consistent strengths.
Jaylin Noel is on injured reserve following a season-ending foot injury. Reed Blankenship and David Montgomery are out Sunday, while Jalen Pitre has no injury designation.
The Texans have enough defensive talent to disrupt opponents, but their offense needs better balance. Relying almost entirely on the passing game has made sustaining drives difficult.
Houston can rush the passer and protect the football, but those strengths haven’t translated into enough wins.
Texans vs. Chargers QB Matchup
Justin Herbert has thrown for 1,398 yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions through seven games. His mistakes have been costly, particularly when Los Angeles has needed a scoring drive.
Herbert has also been sacked 23 times. Protection problems have contributed to an offense that rarely finds a comfortable rhythm.
C.J. Stroud has thrown for 1,867 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception. His decision-making has been considerably sharper than Herbert’s through the first half of the season.
Stroud can challenge defenses downfield, but Houston’s limited rushing production places additional pressure on his passing efficiency. The Chargers’ secondary presents a legitimate test.
Herbert needs to get the ball out quickly and avoid forcing throws into coverage. Stroud must recognize pressure before the snap and prevent Houston’s offense from becoming predictable.

The Texans will look to exploit Los Angeles’ protection problems, while the Chargers need their secondary to challenge Stroud’s preferred passing windows.
Both quarterbacks face demanding assignments.
Houston Texans vs. Los Angeles Chargers bottom line: Stroud has delivered the cleaner passing season, but Herbert’s ability to respond under pressure could determine whether Los Angeles finally turns the corner.
Houston Texans vs. Los Angeles Chargers Football Betting Trends
- The Texans have a 100% success rate in their last 8 regular season games with totals of 42 or less.
- Also, Houston is 6-1 straight up in their last 7 regular season away games.
- In their last 10 regular season games after a win, the Texans have a solid 8-2 straight-up record.
- The Chargers, on the other hand, have a 3-4 straight-up record in their last 7 home games during the regular season.
- Additionally, Los Angeles has struggled as underdogs, with a 3-6 record against the spread in their last 9 regular season games.
- The Chargers have hit the under in 10 of their last 13 regular season games.
Texans Chargers Free Pick: Chargers -4.5
Here is my Texans Chargers free pick: I’m taking Los Angeles Chargers -4.5. Houston has the better record, but this isn’t some unstoppable football machine coming to town. The Texans have their own problems finishing games, and I’m betting Los Angeles finally makes somebody pay.
For this number to cash, Herbert needs to stop giving away possessions and start turning scoring opportunities into touchdowns. That’s a big demand from a winless team, but the Chargers aren’t short on talent. They’re short on execution.
Seven losses are ugly, but I’m betting on a response rather than another afternoon of excuses.
The opening quarter matters. If Los Angeles establishes a lead, it can lean on its defense and make Houston play from behind instead of letting the Texans dictate the afternoon.
I’m taking the risk that Harbaugh finally gets a complete performance out of this group. No participation trophies for keeping it close. I want the home team winning outright and clearing the number: Los Angeles Chargers -4.5.
