2026 NFL Handicapping – Detroit Lions vs Miami Dolphins
Here’s why I’m backing a Miami ATS bet below in my Lions Dolphins free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Lions vs. Dolphins Gameday
The Detroit Lions head to South Florida for a Week 9 matchup with the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, November 8, 2026. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM ET at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, with FOX carrying the game.
Dan Campbell’s Lions enter at 5-2, having won three straight. Detroit looks like a playoff contender, although its 1-2 road record leaves room for improvement.
Detroit has the talent advantage, but Miami isn’t exactly handing out free victories.
Jeff Hafley’s Dolphins sit at 1-6, with their only victory coming against the New York Jets. Miami remains winless at home, hardly inspiring much local enthusiasm.
Still, the Dolphins have shown occasional offensive improvement. Turning those stretches into four competitive quarters remains the challenge.
Detroit wants to stay in the NFC North race. Miami would settle for giving its fans something worth cheering about.
It’s Week 9, Detroit Lions vs. Miami Dolphins, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Detroit Lions vs. Miami Dolphins Odds & Previous Games
The Lions are favored at -341 on the moneyline, with Miami returning +276. Detroit is laying 7 points at -111, while the Dolphins get +7 at -110.
The total is 50.5 points, with the over at -108 and under at -113. That’s a substantial expectation for two very different offenses.
Detroit has won four of five, including victories over Minnesota 19-15, Green Bay 20-17 and Arizona 45-21. Its lone loss came 32-26 at Carolina.
Miami has dropped four of five, recently falling 24-19 to New England. The Dolphins also lost to Cincinnati 31-24 and Minnesota 15-10, but beat the Jets 28-25.
Miami won the last regular-season meeting 31-27 in 2022 and a 24-17 preseason contest in 2025. Exhibition results aren’t exactly where I’d build my Sunday betting strategy.
Detroit won 32-21 in Miami in 2018 and 20-16 at home in 2014. Those results offer history, but today’s personnel matters considerably more.

Dolphins Stats From Last Week
Miami averages 16.7 points and approximately 290 total yards per game, ranking near the NFL’s bottom offensively. That leaves little margin for mistakes.
Malik Willis completed 21 of 32 passes for 211 yards and 2 TDs against New England. Unfortunately, Miami still couldn’t finish the job.
Ollie Gordon II leads Miami with 408 rushing yards and 4 TDs. Malik Washington has 329 receiving yards and a touchdown, but the passing attack needs more consistency.
Defensively, Miami has surrendered 1,547 passing yards through seven games.
That looks respectable until you examine the bigger picture.
The Dolphins allow 25.9 points per game and have recorded only 9 sacks. Opposing quarterbacks have enjoyed far too much breathing room.
That lack of pressure is especially concerning against Detroit. Miami must create disruption without leaving its secondary exposed.
Injuries haven’t helped, with De’Von Achane and Cole Turner on injured reserve. Jaylen Wright has a quadriceps injury, while Malik Herring is dealing with a neck issue.
Offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor has been monitored through concussion protocol. Miami needs reliable protection against Detroit’s defensive front.
Lions Stats From Last Week
Detroit averages 395.4 total yards and 29 points per game, boasting one of the NFL’s strongest offenses. The Lions can attack through the air or on the ground.
Jahmyr Gibbs has rushed for 773 yards and 8 TDs while adding 285 receiving yards. He’s dangerous regardless of how Detroit gets him the football.
Amon-Ra St. Brown leads the receivers with 571 yards and 5 TDs. Jameson Williams adds another dangerous option, giving Detroit impressive offensive depth.
Defensively, Detroit allows 276.6 passing yards per game. Its secondary has struggled, although the pass rush helps compensate.
The Lions have recorded 24 sacks, ranking among league leaders. That pressure protects a secondary vulnerable when quarterbacks have time.
Linebacker Jack Campbell and cornerback D.J. Reed are dealing with neck and hip injuries. Their availability matters, particularly given Detroit’s defensive concerns.
Cade Mays and DJ Wonnum have also battled injuries, while St. Brown has a rib issue. Brian Branch returned to full practice Thursday.
Lions vs. Dolphins QB Matchup
Jared Goff has completed 67.7% of his passes for 1,964 yards, 15 TDs and only 1 interception. His accuracy and decision-making drive Detroit’s offense.
Goff thrives when Detroit establishes balance and uses play-action. He’s averaging 9.2 yards per attempt on those throws, punishing defenses focused on stopping the run.
Against Minnesota, Goff managed 176 passing yards, 1 TD and 1 interception. Even good quarterbacks occasionally need their highlight reels edited.
Miami presents an opportunity for Goff to regain his rhythm, provided Detroit protects him. The Dolphins have struggled against efficient passing attacks.
Malik Willis has completed 59% of his passes for 1,268 yards, 6 TDs and 5 interceptions. His athleticism creates opportunities, but consistency remains an issue.
Willis has thrown multiple touchdowns in consecutive games. His completion percentage has also improved, encouraging signs for Miami’s developing offense.
Detroit has struggled against quarterbacks who extend plays. Willis has the mobility to exploit that weakness if he protects the football.

Willis practiced fully Thursday after dealing with a groin issue. His mobility remains important to Miami’s offensive approach.
Goff offers superior experience and accuracy. Willis brings improvisation, but his decisions under pressure could determine Miami’s success.
Detroit owns the more polished passing attack. Miami must avoid repeated third-and-long situations against the Lions’ pass rush.
Detroit Lions vs. Miami Dolphins bottom line: Goff gives Detroit the quarterback advantage, but Willis must translate Miami’s recent passing improvement into sustained drives.
Detroit Lions vs. Miami Dolphins Football Betting Trends
- The Lions have a perfect 3-0 straight-up record in their last three regular season games when playing as favorites.
- Also, Detroit has hit the over in all three of their last regular season away games.
- In games with totals set at 50 or more, the Lions have gone over in seven of their last nine regular season matchups.
- The Dolphins have covered the spread in three of their last four regular season games as underdogs.
- Additionally, Miami has gone over the total in all three of their last regular season games when playing as underdogs.
- In their last four regular season games, the Dolphins have a 3-1 record against the spread.
Lions Dolphins Free Pick: Dolphins +7
Here is my Lions Dolphins free pick: I’m taking Miami Dolphins +7 (-110). Detroit is clearly the better football team, but the Lions have been far more convincing at Ford Field than on the road. Asking them to win by more than a touchdown in Miami is a different proposition. The Dolphins have covered three of their last four regular-season games as underdogs.
They’re not winning many football games, but covering spreads doesn’t require collecting trophies.
Detroit has won its last two games by four points apiece. That’s hardly the kind of separation I’m looking for when laying seven on the road.
Detroit can win this game without ever threatening to cover the number.
I expect the Lions to control stretches of this matchup, but Miami has enough offensive flexibility to keep the scoreboard moving. If the Dolphins avoid giving Detroit short fields, there’s a reasonable path to keeping this within one possession.
The Lions deserve to be favored, but I’m not paying extra for their reputation.
Give me the full touchdown with the home team.
Detroit can have the victory.
I’ll take the points and back the Dolphins +7 (-110).
