Browns vs. Buccaneers Gameday
As Week 2 unfolds, Cleveland travels to Raymond James Stadium to face Tampa Bay on Sunday. Both teams are 0-1, with kickoff set for 1:00 PM ET on CBS.
The Browns opened the Todd Monken era with a 34-10 loss at Jacksonville. Cleveland fell behind 31-0 early in the third quarter, produced only 272 yards and committed 11 penalties for 75 yards.
Cleveland waited until 31-0 to start scoring, which is probably a little late for the preferred game plan.
Tampa Bay’s opener was considerably more competitive and somehow nearly as frustrating. The Buccaneers lost 33-27 at Cincinnati after fumbling on three consecutive first-half possessions and losing four fumbles overall.
That’s a lot of footballs to donate in one afternoon.
Sunday also puts Baker Mayfield opposite his former team for the first time in the regular season. Cleveland won the most recent meeting 23-17 in overtime in 2022, when Mayfield was playing for Carolina.

Cleveland Browns vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Odds & Last 5
Tampa Bay is heavily favored, with the Buccaneers around -431 on the moneyline and Cleveland returning +337. The Bucs are laying 8.5 points, while the total sits at 41.5.
Cleveland didn’t give bettors much reason for optimism in Jacksonville.
The Browns managed only 10 points and 272 yards, with their lone touchdown coming on Denzel Boston’s 46-yard reception late in the fourth quarter. They also turned the ball over twice and possessed it for only 26:09.
Tampa Bay’s 27 points came under considerably stranger circumstances.
The Buccaneers didn’t punt against Cincinnati. Their possessions ended with either points or turnovers, and four lost fumbles helped the Bengals build a 24-10 halftime lead.
That makes the 33-27 final almost flattering. Tampa Bay spent most of the afternoon stepping on rakes and still had the football with a chance to make things uncomfortable late.
Buccaneers Stats From Last Season
Tampa Bay produced 282 yards against Cincinnati, with 193 net yards through the air and 89 on the ground. The Bucs scored 27 points despite giving Cincinnati four extra possessions.
Baker Mayfield was accurate when he wasn’t getting mugged.
Mayfield completed 23 of 28 passes for 216 yards without an interception. He was sacked four times, lost three fumbles and also rushed five times for 30 yards and a touchdown.
Mayfield completed 82% of his passes and still lost three fumbles, because football occasionally has a sense of humor.
Bucky Irving supplied 93 yards from scrimmage.
Irving rushed eight times for 45 yards and a touchdown while catching seven passes for another 48. Emeka Egbuka led Tampa Bay’s receivers with five catches for 63 yards.
The defense created some points of its own.
Rookie Josiah Trotter intercepted Joe Burrow and returned it 38 yards for a touchdown, but Tampa Bay otherwise struggled to generate pressure. Burrow was sacked once while Cincinnati finished with 351 total yards.
The current injury report is relatively encouraging. Jalen McMillan, Justin Skule and Sean Tucker were full participants Thursday, while Miles Killebrew and Jacob Parrish remained limited.
Browns Stats From Last Season
Cleveland’s opener was ugly early and mostly stayed that way. The Browns finished with 272 yards, committed two turnovers and didn’t score until Andre Szmyt’s third-quarter field goal made it 31-3.
Deshaun Watson finished 16-of-22 for 205 yards.
Watson threw one touchdown and one interception while making his first regular-season start since 2024. His best moment came late, when he found rookie Denzel Boston for a 46-yard touchdown.
The running game offered very little help.
Cleveland managed 87 rushing yards as a team, with Quinshon Judkins limited to 33. Falling into a massive deficit obviously didn’t help the workload, but the Browns never established much offensive rhythm.
The defense wasn’t much happier.
Jacksonville generated 360 yards and Trevor Lawrence threw four touchdown passes. Cleveland recorded only one sack and didn’t force a turnover, allowing the Jaguars to score touchdowns on four of their first six possessions.
There are offensive-line concerns entering Sunday. Teven Jenkins missed practice Wednesday and Thursday with a back injury, while Parker Brailsford and Elgton Jenkins were limited. Tyson Campbell also missed Thursday with an ankle injury.

Browns vs. Buccaneers QB Matchup
Baker Mayfield’s passing numbers were much better than Tampa Bay’s final result. He completed 23 of 28 attempts for 216 yards without throwing an interception.
Holding onto the football was the issue.
Mayfield gets his former team Sunday, although three lost fumbles gave him plenty of revenge work to do first.
Mayfield lost three fumbles against Cincinnati, including one returned for a touchdown and another at the goal line. He still helped Tampa Bay claw back from a 24-10 halftime deficit and scored on an eight-yard run with 3:19 remaining.
Deshaun Watson had a quieter return to regular-season football.
Watson completed 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards, one touchdown and one interception against Jacksonville. He also rushed for 38 yards, but Cleveland couldn’t sustain drives until the game was already well beyond comfortable reach.
Sunday gives Watson a more vulnerable defense.
Tampa Bay allowed Cincinnati to score 33 points, although 20 came directly after Buccaneers turnovers. Cleveland needs Watson to generate something earlier than garbage time if it’s going to make an 8.5-point road spread interesting.
Browns vs. Buccaneers bottom line: Tampa Bay lost four fumbles and still scored 27 last week, while Cleveland waited until 31-0 to locate the end zone, so 41.5 is basically asking whether the Browns can join the party before everyone starts cleaning up.

Tampa Bay’s opener was a different mess. The Buccaneers never punted, yet four lost fumbles repeatedly handed Cincinnati points and short fields.
Four fumbles are difficult to repeat, thankfully even for Tampa Bay.
The Bucs scored 27 while losing four fumbles, which is almost impressive in the worst possible way.
Mayfield completed 23 of 28 passes, Bucky Irving produced 93 yards from scrimmage and the Bucs scored 27 while repeatedly sabotaging themselves. Cleaner possessions should give this offense more chances to finish drives.
Cleveland also has room to improve.
Watson threw for 205 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while Denzel Boston flashed with a 46-yard score. Tampa Bay allowed 33 points and didn’t consistently pressure Joe Burrow, so opportunities should be there.
The Browns’ defense allowed 34 in Jacksonville, including four Trevor Lawrence touchdown passes. That’s not exactly the profile I want when betting a low total against Mayfield in his first game against his former team.
I don’t need Cleveland to become explosive. Something in the 27-17 neighborhood gets the job done.
