Cincinnati takes its 2-0 record to Pittsburgh Sunday for its first AFC North game of the season. The Steelers are 1-1 under Mike McCarthy, with kickoff set for 1:00 PM ET at Acrisure Stadium on CBS.
The Bengals opened with a 33-27 win over Tampa Bay before going to Houston and beating the Texans 20-6. Cincinnati’s defense took over that second game, holding Houston to 274 yards while generating five sacks.
Cincinnati brings the perfect record; Pittsburgh supplies the usual AFC North invitation to get uncomfortable.
Pittsburgh beat Atlanta 20-13 in its opener before New England handed the Steelers a 20-3 loss last Sunday. The offense has yet to reach 300 yards in a game and has scored only two touchdowns through two weeks.

The teams split last season’s meetings. Cincinnati won a 33-31 shootout in October before Pittsburgh answered with a 34-12 victory a month later, which feels about right for a rivalry that rarely follows the script for very long.

Pittsburgh’s offense has struggled out of the gate, averaging 11.5 points while failing to reach 300 yards in either game. The passing attack is producing only 175 yards per game, and the running game hasn’t done enough to take pressure off Rodgers.
Aaron Rodgers has thrown for 408 yards and one touchdown through two games.
Most of Pittsburgh’s passing production has come underneath. Rodgers has yet to complete a throw traveling more than 20 yards in the air despite taking nine such shots, leaving the Steelers searching for the explosive plays that can loosen a defense.
Jaylen Warren leads Pittsburgh with 89 rushing yards on 21 carries. Rico Dowdle has managed only 38 yards on 15 attempts, while Pat Freiermuth leads the Steelers with nine catches for 78 yards and Rodgers’ only touchdown pass.
The defense has been considerably more productive.
Pittsburgh has seven sacks and four takeaways through two games. T.J. Watt owns 3.5 sacks, Alex Highsmith has three, and the Steelers have held both Atlanta and New England below 200 passing yards.
The run defense has been easier to move.
Pittsburgh is allowing 128 rushing yards per game and has surrendered seven runs of at least 10 yards. That gives Chase Brown and Cincinnati another way to attack rather than asking Burrow to spend four quarters staring at Watt and Highsmith.
Bengals Stats
Cincinnati is averaging 26.5 points through its 2-0 start. The Bengals have generated 618 offensive yards, with Burrow accounting for 461 through the air.
Cincinnati’s offense gets the headlines, but eight sacks and six points allowed last week deserve some attention too.
Burrow has completed 45 of 66 passes for 461 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He threw for 254 yards against Tampa Bay before finishing 20 of 31 for 207 yards and two scores in Houston.
Protection remains something to watch.
Burrow was sacked five times by the Texans after Tampa Bay got him once in the opener. Pittsburgh brings seven sacks into Sunday, so Cincinnati’s tackles won’t need anyone to explain where Watt and Highsmith are lining up.
Chase Brown has rushed 36 times for 136 yards and a touchdown. Tee Higgins leads Cincinnati with 154 receiving yards, while Ja’Marr Chase has nine catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
The Bengals defense has been the bigger early surprise.
Cincinnati has allowed only 149 rushing yards through two games and recorded eight sacks. Jonathan Allen and Cedric Johnson have two apiece, while the Bengals haven’t surrendered a passing touchdown yet.
They’ve also forced four turnovers while committing only one.
B.J. Hill and Jonathan Allen both missed Thursday’s practice, with Hill dealing with an Achilles injury and Allen receiving rest while also carrying a knee designation. Andrei Iosivas remained out with a thumb injury.
Bengals vs. Steelers QB Matchup
Aaron Rodgers has thrown for 408 yards and one touchdown through his first two games of the season. Pittsburgh’s passing game has been conservative, with Rodgers doing most of his damage on shorter throws while the offense searches for more production downfield.
The Patriots made that difficult last Sunday.

Pittsburgh’s pass defense presents a different problem.
Neither Atlanta nor New England reached 200 passing yards against the Steelers, and Watt and Highsmith have combined for 6.5 sacks. Joey Porter Jr. has also returned to limited practice this week after missing the first two games.

Here is my Bengals Steelers free pick: I’m taking Steelers +3.5. Cincinnati is 2-0 and clearly playing the better football, but laying more than a field goal in Pittsburgh is a different proposition, especially with the Bengals stepping into AFC North play for the first time this season.
The Steelers haven’t given Aaron Rodgers much help offensively. Pittsburgh is averaging only 11.5 points, but its defense has kept both games manageable and already produced seven sacks and four takeaways.
This isn’t a bet on Pittsburgh’s offense suddenly becoming pretty; three and a hook gives me room for ugly.
That’s important against Joe Burrow. He’s been sacked six times already, including five against Houston, and now gets T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith on the road. Pittsburgh doesn’t need Rodgers trading touchdowns with Burrow if the defense can keep Cincinnati from finding an early rhythm.
I expect the Steelers to lean on the running game, shorten this thing and make Burrow earn every possession. Rivalry games don’t automatically stay close, but this matchup gives Pittsburgh enough defensive ways to make Cincinnati uncomfortable.
Give me the home dog and the extra half-point.
