Seahawks vs. Commanders Gameday
Seattle takes its 2-0 record to Northwest Stadium Sunday for a Week 3 matchup with Washington. The Commanders are 0-2 and finally get their home opener after beginning the season with consecutive NFC East road games.
The Seahawks beat New England 13-10 in the NFL opener before handling Arizona 31-7 last Sunday. Mike Macdonald’s defense has allowed only two touchdowns through two games, while Drew Lock has done considerably more than simply keep the offense afloat.
Seattle arrives unbeaten; Washington finally gets home and would probably prefer its starting quarterback came with it.
Jayden Daniels won’t be available after dislocating his left elbow against Dallas. Marcus Mariota is expected to start for Dan Quinn, giving Washington a veteran quarterback against one of the league’s hottest defenses.

Seattle has its own quarterback decision. Sam Darnold returned to full practice Thursday after missing Week 2 with a glute injury, putting him in position to potentially return Sunday after Lock led the Seahawks to their 2-0 start.
Seattle Seahawks vs. Washington Commanders Odds & Last 5
Seattle is a 7-point road favorite, with the Seahawks around -305 on the moneyline and Washington roughly +245. The total sits at 40.5.
The Seahawks have won with two very different scripts.
Seattle needed its defense in a 13-10 opener against New England, then controlled Arizona 31-7 on the road. The Seahawks held the Cardinals to 173 yards while Lock threw three touchdown passes, all to Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Washington has scored more but hasn’t stopped enough.
The Commanders lost 24-22 at Philadelphia before falling 37-20 in Dallas. Washington rushed for 182 yards against the Cowboys, but Dallas generated 428 total yards and scored on six of its first seven possessions.
The Commanders now return home without Daniels, while Seattle comes east allowing only 214 yards and 8.5 points per game. That’s a fairly rude assignment for your home opener.

Commanders Stats
Washington has generated 684 offensive yards through two games, including 314 on the ground. The Commanders are averaging 342 yards and 21 points despite opening with two road losses.
The running game has been their most reliable piece.
Jacory Croskey-Merritt leads Washington with 106 rushing yards, while Daniels added 100 before his injury. Rachaad White has 65 yards on 14 carries, and the Commanders ran for a season-high 182 against Dallas.
Stefon Diggs leads the receiving corps with nine catches for 102 yards and three touchdowns. Antonio Williams has seven receptions for 88 yards, while Terry McLaurin has four for 64.
Washington’s defense has been considerably easier to move.
The Commanders have allowed 650 yards and 61 points, including seven passing touchdowns without an interception. They have five sacks, but opponents are averaging 8.6 yards per pass attempt.
Daniels’ injury changes the offense, but he isn’t Washington’s only concern.
Samuel Cosmi, Frankie Luvu and Chigoziem Okonkwo remained out of practice Thursday. Javon Kinlaw returned on a limited basis, while Dorance Armstrong, Leo Chenal and Charles Omenihu were also limited.
Seahawks Stats
Seattle has been one of the league’s stingiest teams through two weeks, allowing 428 total yards and only 17 points. Opponents are averaging 3.7 yards per play and have turned the football over four times.
Seattle has allowed 17 points in two games, which is one way to make quarterback uncertainty less stressful.
The offense has produced 666 yards despite losing Darnold after one series in the opener.
Lock has completed 35 of 48 passes for 422 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He followed a steady relief appearance against New England with 235 yards and three scores against Arizona.
Smith-Njigba has been ridiculous.
He has 17 catches for 277 yards and four touchdowns, including nine receptions for 155 yards and three scores against Arizona. His 82-yard touchdown from Lock was the longest reception of his career.
Seattle has also rushed for 259 yards.
Jadarian Price leads the team with 104 yards on 23 carries, while Emanuel Wilson has 95 on the same number of attempts. Price remained limited Thursday with a chest injury, giving Seattle another offensive situation to monitor.
The defense has four interceptions, with Julian Love responsible for two of them. Love was added to Thursday’s injury report with a calf issue and did not practice, while Ty Okada also remained out.
Darnold’s progress was much better.
He went from limited Wednesday to a full participant Thursday, while Cooper Kupp, Ernest Jones IV, George Holani and Brady Russell were also upgraded to full participation.
Seahawks vs. Commanders QB Matchup
Marcus Mariota takes over for Daniels after playing the second half against Dallas. He completed 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown, finishing with a 109.1 passer rating.
Washington doesn’t need him pretending to be Daniels.
The Commanders have rushed for 314 yards, and that ground game becomes even more important against a Seattle defense allowing only 3.7 yards per play. Mariota protecting the football and keeping Washington on schedule gives the Commanders their best chance to stay around Sunday.
Seattle’s quarterback situation is more interesting.
Lock has been excellent in Darnold’s absence, completing 72.9% of his passes with four touchdowns, no interceptions and a 127.3 passer rating. Darnold, however, practiced fully Thursday and could reclaim the starting job if he’s cleared to return.

That’s a pretty nice problem for Seattle to have.
Lock has built immediate chemistry with Smith-Njigba, and the Seahawks haven’t had to chase offense while their defense suffocates opponents. Darnold’s return would give Macdonald another experienced option without needing to rush anything.
Mariota gets the home crowd and a productive running game.
Seattle brings the defense and two quarterbacks it can trust.
Seattle Seahawks vs. Washington Commanders bottom line: Washington finally gets home with Mariota replacing Daniels, but keeping this competitive means finding running room and avoiding obvious passing situations against a Seattle defense that has spent two weeks making life miserable.

Seahawks Commanders Free Pick: Commanders +7
Here is my Seahawks Commanders free pick: I’m taking Commanders +7. Seattle has been terrific through two games, but this number has climbed with Jayden Daniels sidelined, and I’m willing to take a full touchdown with Washington in its home opener.
Marcus Mariota isn’t Daniels, but he wasn’t overwhelmed when forced into action at Dallas. He completed 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown, and Washington’s 314 rushing yards through two games gives him something to lean on against this Seattle defense.
Seattle deserves to be favored; laying a full touchdown on the road is where I start asking questions.
The Seahawks have allowed only 17 points, so Washington can’t spend Sunday asking Mariota to rescue third-and-long all afternoon. The Commanders need the run game, manageable downs and enough protection to keep Seattle’s pass rush from taking over.
Seattle may also be changing quarterbacks again if Sam Darnold returns. Drew Lock has been excellent in relief, but either way I’m betting Washington can make its home opener considerably more annoying than the market expects.
Seven points gives me enough protection to take that shot.
