In Week 3, the Browns won for the first time in 635 days. The Raiders had to continue to wait for their first win under Jon Gruden in seventeen years.
Baker Mayfield will lead the Browns into the Black Hole in his first career NFL start.
To be clear, I’m assuming Mayfield starts on a Sunday for the first time ever. Tyrod Taylor could very well clear concussion protocol and be available to the Browns.
I just can’t imagine any coach in Hugh Jackson’s position going back to Taylor after what Mayfield did on Thursday night.
He has a swagger and his teammates clearly have a lot of confidence in him. He was fortunate, I think, to be at home, against the Jets, in a game he was summoned to enter without notice.
This game will be a different animal. He won’t be at home with the Cleveland hooligans behind him and there will be no element on surprise. Most any of the magic that Mayfield used to his advantage on Thursday will be gone by this Sunday. Now, he’s just living life as the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns.
But while I have tempered my expectations of the Browns’ offense, I’m high on the defense, which deserves as much, or more, credit for Thursday’s win than Mayfield and the offense.
Myles Garrett, last year’s number one overall pick, looks like an all-pro but still needs some help rushing the passer. He had Cleveland’s only two sacks against the Jets.
Of course, don’t forget to account for Cleveland’s extra few days of rest after playing the early game in Week 3. At the same time, does the extra time off just make it that much more likely that the Browns show up to Oakland with a hangover? It sure does.
They were cracking free beer all night in Cleveland on Thursday night and the Browns are going to come into this game cocky. Yo can be sure that will be a talking point of Head Coach Jon Gruden this week during practice.
The Raiders lost another close game, 28–20 in Miami. The third loss of the season comes on the heels of an opening week loss to the Rams on Monday Night and then a one-point loss in Denver.
This game feels like it’s the breaking point in Oakland. Tension was high when the season started with the move to Vegas impending and Gruden’s ridiculous $100 million contract.
An 0–3 start has the fire roaring in the Bay and shit will completely hit the fan if Gruden starts 0–4 after a home loss to the Browns.
Thing is, I think Cleveland is actually the better team. It has a stronger defense and comparable offense, though Derek Carr is throwing the ball great in the early going this season. Jordy Nelson also broke out for the first time in a Raiders uniform in Week 3.
The context of this game is going to determine the winner; I just can’t decide how it’s going to affect the two teams. The Raiders will either play this game with laser focus or with a nervousness that makes a bad team even worse.

4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Oakland (-150)
This game feels to me like it’s lined perfectly, a true pick with only a small leaning toward the home team. The total doesn’t leave much of a crack to play, either.
It’s the Browns and the Raiders, who knows who things are going to go worse for? That’s how I feel about this one. I’m excited to watch the game but I’m not touching it with a ten foot pole.
