The Carolina Panthers have some unfinished business to settle after missing the playoffs in 2018 with a 7-9 record. This is largely a veteran laden bunch however with not a whole lot to prove during the exhibition season.

The Bears are one of the deepest teams in the NFL which should give them an advantage on Thursday. Chicago needs a lot of FG practice after a double doink missed field goal ended their season a year ago so does that favor an under play in this one?
Carolina Panthers
Cam Newton actually played in three preseason games for the Panthers in 2018, throwing 38 passes which is a lot for a franchise QB. Newton may actually get some limited reps vs. Chicago on Thursday but should give way to backups sooner rather than later.
About those backup signal callers – the Chicago defense is licking their chops at the chance to face Kyle Allen and Will Grier. Carolina would also be wise to limit Christian McCaffrey’s usage in preseason game #1 as he’ll be requred to take a lot of touches during the regular season.

The Panthers didn’t make a lot of big name changes in the offseason but that consistency could actually help them. Ron Rivera has been at the helm in Carolina for 9 years now and OC Norv Turner has been a coach in the league for 33 years. The Panthers were 3-1 in the preseason a year ago.
Chicago Bears
Usually rookie head coaches like to make a name for themselves and develop a winning culture in their inaugural preseason but Chicago’s Matt Nagy had a more ho-hum approach a year ago. Chicago starters not only didn’t lay the last exhibition game in 2018, they skipped the second to last as well which a lot of squads use as their ‘tune-up.’
Nagy and the Bears went 2-3 in the exhibition last season but also led the NFC in points scored during the preseason with 121. 3rd string QB Tyler Bray was one of the leading passers in the ’18 preseason and he’s back in his 2nd year under the Chicago offense. Chase Daniel also threw 74 passes and 5TD in last year’s exhibition and he returns as well.

Chicago has one of the best second units in the NFL thanks to GM Ryan Pace’s ability to find hidden gems in the draft. Khalil Mack and Co. may not see a lot of time on Thursday but players like Nick Kwiatkoski, Aaron Lynch, and Sherrick McManis played big roles in the Bears defensive success a year ago.
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: Bears -3
Chicago has too much depth in this one, especially at the all-important QB position.
NFL Free Preseason Score Prediction: Bears 28 – Panthers 16
Bray and Daniel know this offense to a T.
