Two of the best teams in the AFC will be meeting up in week 4 when the Bills hit the road to face off with the Ravens.
Both of these teams come into this game with a record of 2-1 and will be looking to improve upon that when facing off with a worthy opponent.
Regardless of what happens in this game, I think it will be a statement victory for the winner. There is no question this is a big test for both squads to start off the month of October.
Buffalo has been a favorite in their first three games of the season and they are currently 3-point favorites on the road right now. That number did open at 3.5 and has dropped half a point while the total has dropped from 55 to right around 52.
In a battle between the two best quarterbacks from the 2018 draft, it will be interesting to see which one can lead his team to victory in a highly-anticipated conference matchup.
Buffalo Bills
For a while now, we have often associated good coaching with the Bills, but it was the exact opposite of that at times during Sunday’s loss to the Dolphins which still has some folks shaking their heads.
I am not saying that the coaching was bad for the entire game in Miami, but there were two examples of poor clock management that really prevented this squad from improving to 3-0 on the year. Of course, the players are to blame as well, but when situations like this take place, it falls back to the man in charge.
Before going into the half, Buffalo had a chance to put points on the board and go up 17-14, but they were unable to do so and went into the half tied at 14. With no timeouts left, they got creative and ran a fake spike that almost got intercepted, and ultimately they walked away from that possession with no points at all.
The worst of the worst came in the final seconds of the game when they could not even spike the ball on time as they allowed time to expire in what was a heartbreaking defeat. Generally speaking, those are the sorts of things that well-coached and well-prepared football teams do not do which is what does make it surprising to see.
Putting some of the blunders for the Bills aside, this was a game that they dominated, and if you looked at the stats alone, probably would have thought they won by a wide margin. They controlled time of possession while outgaining their opponent by a very wide margin but were still unable to get the result that really mattered.
Players and coaches often use the term ‘flush it” when attempting to move on from losses which is why I am curious how this team truly responds on Sunday in Baltimore and what version of them we end up seeing. Will they move on and take care of business or will there be some sort of carryover from that debacle?
Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens were able to improve to 2-1 on the year last Sunday with a 37-26 win over the Patriots. Things did not always go smoothly for them in that game, but they were able to do enough in the end.
After they got torched by Tua and the Miami offense the previous week, there was no question there was an emphasis on the defensive side of the ball for this group against New England and I saw mixed results from that unit.
Baltimore still allowed their opponent to move the ball effectively, but there did seem to be an improvement on that side of the ball which they hope will carry over to this game.
The Ravens did a good job of generating pressure on Mac Jones last time out and the defense was able to pick him off three times while also forcing a fumble when the Patriots were driving. They still allowed a lot of yards and more points than they would have liked, but it certainly was not the disaster that we saw from them against the Fish.
It took Lamar Jackson and the offense a little bit of time to get it going, but once they truly got into a rhythm, the Pats had no answers for them at all.
Jackson did get sacked four times, but he still was able to make some very impressive throws and he really killed his opponent with his legs, especially in the second half of the game.
On the afternoon, the star quarterback finished the day with 11 carries for 107 yards and a touchdown. It did not matter what the Patriots tried to do to stop him, he was not going to be contained on the ground.
Another player that really stood out on the offensive side of the ball was Mark Andrews who finished the day with 8 catches for 89 yards and 2 touchdowns. It was pretty clear Jackson was going to keep feeding him the ball yet the New England defense really did not do a whole lot about it.
With another opponent from the AFC East coming up, Baltimore will be in for a big challenge when they face off with an explosive and angry Bills team. If they are not careful, this could be one of those games where their defensive woes are quite glaring.
NFL Betting Trends:
- Bills are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning record.
- Bills are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning road record.
- Ravens are 13-5 ATS in their last 18 games after scoring more than 30 points in their previous game.
- Ravens are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games after allowing more than 250 passing yards in their previous game.
- Ravens are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games vs. a team with a winning record.
4* Free Week 4 NFL Betting Prediction: Ravens +3 (-110)
Even after what took place for both of these teams a week ago, I still view the Bills as the slightly better team here, but I really feel this can be a close game.
Unless Baltimore makes some big adjustments, I do think the Bills will be able to score a good amount of points here just based on some of the talent that Josh Allen has to work with and how many different ways that group can hurt their opponent.
Buffalo has a very impressive defense, but I am not sold on them being able to totally contain Jackson and all of the weapons that he has on that side of the field.
In a contest between two top teams in the AFC, I like the Ravens as the home underdog.
