Atlanta is the only team in the NFL outside of New York without a win this season.
But as bad as the Falcons have been, the Vikings aren’t much better. Minnesota imploded in the second half on Sunday night and fell to 1–4, despite covering as an underdog against Seattle.
Atlanta Falcons
After a home loss to Carolina on Sunday, the Falcons’ ownership announced the firing of Head Coach Dan Quinn.
Quinn led the Falcons for five-plus seasons and an NFC Championship in 2016.
Of course, Atlanta collapsed in the Super Bowl against the Patriots, which will be the game most will remember about Quinn’s time in Atlanta.
Raheem Morris gets his second shot now as an NFL head coach. He spent three seasons in Tampa Bay from 2009 to 2011 and put one good season (10–6) between two poor ones (7–25 combined in 2009 and 2011).
He inherits an offense that has shown it can be dangerous but that’s missing Julio Jones, who missed another game on Sunday with a hamstring.
Calvin Ridley returned from injury to rack up over 130 yards receiving and Todd Gurley sprung for a thirty-five-yard touchdown early in the game.
The Falcons didn’t score a touchdown in the second half, however, and were in too deep a hole by that time to capitalize on a strong defensive performance in the last half-hour against the Panthers.
Minnesota Vikings
As bad as Week 5 was for Dan Quinn and Atlanta, it may have been worse for Minnesota, which got off to a terrific start on Sunday Night Football before a nightmare of a second half.
The Vikings went into the locker room up 13–0 in Seattle but proceeded to give up the lead in the third quarter.
The Seahawks used some big pass plays and capitalized on a turnover to score three touchdowns in less than two minutes of game time.
To make things worse, Dalvin Cook left the game for Minnesota early in the third quarter with a groin pull. He came into the game as the NFL’s leading rusher and had ninety total yards in the first half.
Cook, who missed multiple games in each of his first three pro seasons, may extend that dubious streak into 2020. He will undergo an MRI on Monday but things don’t look promising, especially after his attempt to return to the game on Sunday failed.
And on top of all of that, Minnesota re-took the lead in the fourth quarter when Adam Thielen caught his second touchdown pass, only to lose in the final half-minute on a short DK Metcalf TD.
NFL Betting Trends:
4* Free NFL Betting Prediction: play the Falcons with the points.
The Vikings will spend the first day or two of this week recovering from Sunday Night’s disappointment.
But then consider Cook will likely miss this game and the possibility of Julio Jones’ return on top of Atlanta perhaps showing some signs of life after the coaching change.
A field goal and the hook doesn’t look like a bad deal at all to play the Falcons, who, remember, still have the sense of urgency to simply avoid the 0–16 year.
