2020 AFC West Predictions: Kansas City Chiefs
Chiefs Odds to Win 2021 Super Bowl: +500
Chiefs Odds to Win AFC Conference: +250
Chiefs Odds to Win AFC West Division: -500
The Chiefs have their sights set on new contracts for quarterback Patrick Mahomes and defensive lineman Chris Jones, but for now, the salary cap hasn’t posed a problem and the team’s roster remains largely intact from last year’s Super Bowl-winning group.
They’ll look to do much of what they did a year ago, with one notable addition in first-round running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who’ll bring a new element to the offense. He’s best described as a clone of Brian Westbrook, who found so much success in Andy Reid’s offense with the Eagles.
While running back isn’t normally a target to go after in the early rounds, neither is a run-and-chase linebacker like Willie Gay, but he too fills a need, adding athleticism to Steve Spagnuolo’s linebacking corps.
The Chiefs remain a force in the AFC West, and could be improved from a year ago.
2020 AFC West Predictions: Denver Broncos
Broncos Odds to Win 2021 Super Bowl: +6000
Broncos Odds to Win AFC Conference: +2500
Broncos Odds to Win AFC West Division: +1000
Broncos General manager John Elway had a very strong offseason. He didn’t give up much to add defensive lineman Jurrell Casey and cornerback A.J. Bouye via trade, and signed the top offensive guard on the market in Graham Glasgow, not to mention adding Melvin Gordon to slot in ahead of Phillip Lindsay at running back.
The development of quarterback Drew Lock will determine how the team fares in 2020, and Elway used the team’s first two draft picks on wide receivers, most notably Alabama standout Jerry Jeudy, then later added athletic tight end Albert Okwuegbunam. Denver is one of the most improved teams of the offseason.
2020 AFC West Predictions: Los Angeles Chargers
Chargers Odds to Win 2021 Super Bowl: +5000
Chargers Odds to Win AFC Conference: +2500
Chargers Odds to Win AFC West Division: +800
The Chargers will look very different under center this season, with long-time quarterback Philip Rivers moving to Indianapolis to ply his trade for the Colts.
They spent their top pick, sixth overall, on Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert to compete with Tyrod Taylor for the starting job in Week 1.
General manager Tom Telesco was able to address some other areas of need with the signings of cornerback Chris Harris, and offensive linemen Bryan Bulaga and Trai Turner. This is a talented roster that underperformed a year ago.
Quarterback play will determine how successful their 2020 season will be.
2020 AFC West Predictions: Las Vegas Raiders
Raiders Odds to Win 2021 Super Bowl: +5000
Raiders Odds to Win AFC Conference: +2200
Raiders Odds to Win AFC West Division: +1200
Another interesting draft from Mike Mayock and Jon Gruden was headlined by the selection of Henry Ruggs at No. 12 – a pick that was very reminiscent of an Al Davis selection. Ruggs will be able to stretch opposing defenses for Derek Carr, who himself will be pushed by new signing Marcus Mariota.
The Raiders, already a favorite of the betting public, are moving to Las Vegas this season, which is further going to suck the value from this team on the draft board.
They’re currently not worth investing your betting dollars on.
Cappers Picks 2020 AFC West Predictions
The Chargers will be a tough opponent once Herbert settles in, and the Broncos are much-improved, and could be a contender for a spot in the postseason if a few things break their way, but the Chiefs are priced correctly as a team that’s way out in front of the pack.
With that said, there’s no justification for backing Kansas City at its current price. The AFC West is a division to avoid on the futures board this year, but a dart throw on Denver is advised if you have no other options.
