The loss of Brady hasn’t been enough to convince bettors to make any other team a favorite in the East. New England remains a small +125 favorite with the Buffalo Bills not far behind.
2020 AFC East Predictions: New England Patriots
Patriots Odds to Win 2021 Super Bowl: 25/1
Patriots Odds to Win AFC Conference: 10/1
Patriots Odds to Win AFC East Division: +125
The Patriots have won 16 out of the last 17 AFC East Division titles. The one year they did not win was the season Tom Brady missed after hurting his knee in Week 1. Matt Cassell still helped guide New England to 11 wins.
But that season Tom Brady was just out but coming back. This has a different feeling to it, a feeling of finality and indeed it became final when Brady inked a two-year deal in Tampa Bay worth $50 million.
It isn’t too late for the Patriots to go after a veteran QB in free agency but the signs are pointing to them going with their fourth round pick last season, Jarrett Stidham.
Stidham started some games for Baylor as a true freshman before taking a year off of football and transferring to a community college. He returned to Division I the next season and started for Auburn for two seasons.
Then there’s the issue with why Tom Brady left. I have to imagine it’s because he was skeptical about the Patriots’ chances of competing in 2020. If Brady was concerned about being part of a winner with the Pats, what are the team’s chances without him?
2020 AFC East Predictions: Buffalo Bills
Bills Odds to Win 2021 Super Bowl: 28/1
Bills Odds to Win AFC Conference: 12/1
Bills Odds to Win AFC East Division: +140
The Bills won ten games and got into the playoffs last season, making it two out of three for Head Coach Sean McDermott.
Josh Allen took a leap forward in his second professional season, completing a higher percentage of his passes and throwing nearly half the number of interceptions, on a per-pass basis. He led a league-leading five game-winning drives in the regular season.
And now Allen has Stefon Diggs to throw to. The Bills swung a trade with Minnesota in the offseason to bring in Diggs, who has put up some big numbers for the Vikings over the last couple seasons.
Diggs will play across John Brown with Cole Beasley in the slot and Devin Singletary ready to carry the load in the backfield after a solid rookie season.
2020 AFC East Predictions: New York Jets
Jets Odds to Win 2021 Super Bowl: 100/1
Jets Odds to Win AFC Conference: 40/1
Jets Odds to Win AFC East Division: +650
The Jets haven’t won the AFC East since 2002. They started last season 1–7 before finishing 6–2 to give the fans some confidence going forward.
Sam Darnold looked good after he returned and got back into the swing of things after his bout with mononucleosis. He lost favorite target Robby Anderson in the offseason, though.
Jamison Crowder returns, as does Quincy Enunwa, who some are expecting to break out after a lost season in 2019. Breshad Perriman comes over from Tampa Bay to replace some of Anderson’s production.
LeVeon Bell registered an underwhelming 3.2 yards per carry in his first season as a Jet in 2019 but continued to prove his worth as a workhorse with 245 carries after sitting out the previous season.
2020 AFC East Predictions: Miami Dolphins
Dolphins Odds to Win 2021 Super Bowl: 80/1
Dolphins Odds to Win AFC Conference: 40/1
Dolphins Odds to Win AFC East Division: 8/1
The ‘Fins were the last team other than the Patriots to win the East but that was during a different time.
Miami finished last in the division last season but five wins were enough to get over its season win total and get Head Coach Brian Flores another season at the helm.
Ryan Fitzpatrick remains atop the preseason depth chart but the long-term plan has to be to get Josh Rosen a chance.
Cappers Picks 2020 AFC East Predictions
Buffalo feels like the favorite, despite the numbers. The Bills have a tremendous defense, a hungry fan base and a quarterback it finally feels like it can depend on. With another good target to throw to, Allen is poised to become the best quarterback in a weak division.
