2016-2017 Lions Preview & NFL Future Lines
Looking for 2016 Detroit Lions Predictions? We’ve got your back. The Detroit Lions are one of the worst run franchises in football. There’s just no way around that. But last season after the team started 0-5 and then went into their bye at 1-7 and everyone stopped paying attention to them – they went 6-2 in the second half of the season – and one of those losses came on a Hail Mary was only made possible by an incorrect face-mask penalty.

2016 Detroit Lions Handicapping
The schedule certainly could have been tougher, but if not for that ridiculous ending against Green Bay and a blown call that cost them a victory in Seattle, we’d be looking at this team a whole lot different right now.
Maybe they’re on to something in Detroit. And more importantly, can that magic carry over into this season?
2016 Lions Roster Changes
The move of the offseason was another Lions star retiring early, as Calvin Johnson just couldn’t take the losing anymore and called it quits.
He gave the Lions nine incredible seasons and will go down as one of the top 5 players to ever play his position.

After Barry Sanders went away after 10 seasons with only one playoff win, Johnson leaves after nine without a playoff win. The memories of Barry only made the Johnson news hurt Lions fans even more.
The Lions brought in Marvin Jones, prying him away from the Cincinnati Bengals to fill the void Johnson left behind.
He’s got some potential and it’ll be interesting to see what he can do in a more pass-heavy offense.
First round pick Taylor Decker should be starting at left tackle in Week 1.
2016 Detroit Lions Predictions: Offense
With Johnson gone, Matthew Stafford is the new star of the offense. He looked like a different man after Jim Bob Cooter was promoted to offensive coordinator.
A full offseason for Cooter and Stafford to work should pay dividends come the regular year. Stafford’s only 28 years old, so he’s still coming into his prime.
Jones joins Golden Tate as Stafford’s top receiving options.

Tate’s put up big numbers when Johnson’s been out of the lineup, so he could be in for a triple-digit reception season as the new No. 1 target in a very pass-happy offense.
Adding veteran Anquan Boldin should provide some leadership to the transitioning group.
The running back situation remains a little muddled.
The Lions want Ameer Abdullah to be the guy out of the backfield, but he just hasn’t shown enough to justify earning that designation.
Stafford loves to take what the defense gives him and check down to his running backs, and Theo Riddick was the beneficiary of those dump offs last season.
He figures to occupy a similar roll this season.
2016 Detroit Lions Predictions: Defense
Defensive end Ezekiel Ansah is Detroit’s best player on the defensive side of the ball, but we saw last season how important DeAndre Levy is to that unit. They missed him in a big way when he got hurt.

Levy returns, but there wasn’t much in the way of additions or subtractions to a unit that was pretty underwhelming a year ago.
The team’s offensive line needed a lot of help so that’s where the front office’s focus was in the offseason, leaving little attention to be paid to the defense.
2016 Detroit Lions Analysis:
The way the Lions ended last season makes them a popular sleeper pick this year.
They did what they did with a 27-year-old quarterback and a lot of other young players, so maybe they just figured something out? Probably not.
Their success surely had more to do with a soft schedule than anything else.
They’ll be better with Cooter running the offense, but there are still a lot of flaws, and transitioning to life after Megatron won’t be easy. The Lions will likely finish in the 6-7 win range.
