On Sunday, February 14th, The Minnesota Timberwolves meet the Toronto Raptors for the first time this season.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Raptors winning both and owning a current five-game win streak over the Wolves. The Raptors hold the all-time record having won 33 matches of the 48 played.
Minnesota Timberwolves
Karl-Anthony Towns returned after missing 13 consecutive games due to testing positive for COVID-19. Of all the NBA players his situation is perhaps the hardest hit as he lost his mother and six family members during the pandemic.
He returned to play the Clippers who all could be seen approaching KAT post-game to offer a hug or share a few words. While they are all competitors the loss Towns has suffered is a reminder to every fan and player of just how deadly the virus is.
Towns also played on Friday versus the Hornets and through the two games looks sharp and not like he’s missed significant time. In those two games, he averaged 21.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.5 steals, and shot 46.7 percent from deep on 7.5 attempts.
The bad luck for the Wolves continues since D’Angelo Russell had to sit with a leg injury just as Towns returned.
Jarrett Culver missed the Friday match due to an ankle sprain and is questionable for Sunday. D’Angelo Russell is nursing a leg injury and won’t play in Tampa Bay on Sunday.
Toronto Raptors
The Super Bowl road trip is complete as the Raptors posted a 4-2 record with both losses occurring on the second game of back-to-back sets.
That’s something the Raptors historically didn’t do — lose those second games of back-to-backs. Last season the Raptors were 8-4 in second nights of back-to-back sets. This year they are 0-4.
That likely speaks to how little leeway this club has given the losses of Serge Ibaka and Marc Gasol all while trying to integrate a number of new players and also play essentially every game on the road.
Although the Raptors have avoided the pandemic issues some teams were hit by they’ve navigated injuries to their core and haven’t been able to get everyone playing at their best on a nightly basis.
Certainly, not having OG Anunoby during the recent road trip hurt and while they’d hoped he’d be back for the end of the trip he missed his ninth game. He’s listed as questionable for Sunday.
After a forgettable bubble experience and the poor start to the season, Pascal Siakam appears to be back on track. In the last eight games he’s averaging 25.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 1.8 steals and is shooting 42.3 percent from deep on 3.3 attempts.
That’s a significant improvement over his initial 15 games particularly the scoring (18.1) and 3-point shooting (25.4%). Specifically, during this eight-game stretch, he increased his scoring by 7.3 points and improved his perimeter efficiency by almost 17 percent.
Yuta Watanabe missed the last two games with an ankle sprain and is unlikely to suit up versus the Wolves.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
- The Wolves are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 head to head meetings
- Over/Under is 7-3 in the teams last 10 head to head meetings
Free Minnesota Timberwolves vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Towns should have a much easier time versus the Raptors without Ibaka or Gasol to contend with. However, the Wolves will need more than Towns to overcome their 28th ranked offense and 23rd ranked defense.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Wolves +8.5
The Raptors have climbed from 14th to eight in the East and can see a light with three games separating the six teams seeded third through eighth. While I believe the Raptors get the victory I think KAT keeps the score under 8.5 points.
