Game 5 of the conference semi-finals between the fourth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers and the top-seeded Boston Celtics continues on Wednesday. The Celtics look to close out the series after winning both games in Cleveland including a 109-102 victory on Monday.
Season Series
Last season the teams played four times with the Cavaliers taking three of the four contests while the Celtics reversed their fortunes this season taking two of the three meetings. Boston holds the all-time record between the squads with 139 victories in 226 matches.
The clubs have a long storied playoff history having faced each other on eight prior occasions each winning four of the series. The last meeting occurred in 2018 with the Cavs winning 4-3.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, on Tuesday, May 14th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Wednesday, May 15th.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Credit to the Cavaliers who were without two starters (Donovan Mitchell and Jarrett Allen) in Game 4 but played scrappy and refused to quit pushing the Celtics right to the buzzer.
The situation doesn’t get much better heading back to Bean Town with both Mitchell and Allen remaining questionable plus Caris LeVert now in question as well.
Cavaliers Stats
Through the season, Cleveland ranked 16th offensively (114.7), and seventh defensively (112.1) with a plus +2.5 net differential that ranked 12th overall.
To this point in the playoffs, the Cavaliers rank 14th offensively (104.1) and fourth defensively (109.5) with a minus -5.4 net differential ranking 12th.
Cleveland performs below average against the spread with a 43-48-2 record through 93 contests.
Cavaliers Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Caris LeVert, SF (questionable knee)
- Donovan Mitchell, PG (questionable — calf)
- Jarrett Allen, C (questionable — ribs)
- Craig Porter Jr., PG (OUT indefinitely — ankle)
- Ty Jerome, PG (OUT indefinitely—ankle)
Boston Celtics
If it feels like the Celtics are getting an easy ride to the Finals it’s because they are. In each of their series they’ve faced opponents who are dealing with substantial injuries.
Should they move onto the Conference Finals (hint – they will) they’ll either face the decimated Knicks or the Pacers who occasionally play defense and a hobbled Tyrese Haliburton.
Considering the battles in the Western Conference it hardly seems fair, but Boston can only play who is on the floor. However, by not getting tested it might come back to haunt them – – stay tuned.
Celtics Stats
Boston ranked first offensively (122.2) and was second defensively (110.6) while registering a net differential of plus +111.7 which also ranked first overall.
Through two semi-final games, the Celtics rank third both offensively (117.8) and defensively (105.5) with a plus +12.3 net differential that ranks first.
In terms of the Celtics’ performance against the spread, they offer a 47-39-5 record through 91 matches.
Celtics Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Kristaps Porzingis, PF (OUT indefinitely — calf)

Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
Perhaps most fans will focus on the injury report entering this match but in reality, the biggest question is whether the Celtics will learn from their mistakes and take this game seriously.
The Celts are 14-14 in their last 28 home playoff games and frankly have looked bored in many matches this postseason.
It’s a dangerous habit to continue because they are highlighting a propensity to take their foot off the gas and given they’ve only played one match that entered clutch time it could be problematic in future series.
All that to say I expect Boston to secure the victory regardless of who suits up for Cleveland.
Caveat: if both Mitchell and Allen play consider taking the points.
