The conference semi-finals between the second-seed Denver Nuggets and third-seed Minnesota Timberwolves shift back to the North Star State for Game 6. After a 112-97 win on Tuesday, Denver seeks to close out the series while Minny hopes to avoid going fishing.
Season Series
For the past two seasons, these teams have split the season series each winning twice. Denver holds the all-time record between the squads with 89 victories in 145 matches.
This is the third time in franchise history the teams are meeting in the postseason with each side having advanced via a gentleman’s sweep in the first round.
The most recent meeting occurred last season in the Nuggets title run and notably, afterward Michael Malone said it was the toughest test they faced.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, on Wednesday, May 15th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Thursday, May 16th.
Denver Nuggets
Prior to Game 5, Nikola Jokic was presented with his third MVP trophy and left no questions about why he won it.
Defensive Player of the Year, Rudy Gobert and Sixth Man of the Year Naz Reid both struggled to defend as the typically quiet Jokic went at them both with a vengeance.
Jokic finished with 40 points, 13 assists, seven rebounds, two steals and a block without a turnover. His teammates also stepped up with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope having his best game in the series while Aaron Gordon continued his two-way brilliance (18 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists).
Nuggets Stats
In the season, Denver ranked fifth offensively (117.8) and eighth defensively (112.3) with a net differential of plus +5.5 ranking fourth overall.
This postseason, the Nuggets rank seventh offensively (113.4) and sixth defensively (109.8) with a plus +3.6 net differential ranking fifth.
Despite their overall placement, the Nuggets aren’t as solid against the spread with a 42-47-2 record through 91 contests.
Nuggets Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Jamal Murray, PG (probable— calf strain)
- Vlatko Cancar, SF (OUT indefinitely— knee)
Minnesota Timberwolves
Anthony Edwards’ streak of dominating was put to the test admittedly impacted by the absence of Mike Conley. He shot 5 of 15 from the field while seven of AntMan’s 18 points came at the charity stripe as Denver repeatedly defended him with double teams.
Although Karl-Anthony Towns led the Wolves in scoring with 23 it’s clear the Nuggets are more than happy to make him the primary option.
Timberwolves Stats
Through the regular season, Minnesota ranked tied for 17th on offense (120.8) and first defensively (105.5) while they were a plus +15.3 net differential, ranking third overall.
In the playoffs, the Wolves rank tied for sixth offensively (116.0), and eighth defensively (111.6) with a plus +4.4 net differential ranking fourth overall.
The Wolves rode the middle with a 46-43-1 record against the spread through 90 matches this season.
Timberwolves Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Mike Conley, PG (questionable — Achilles)

Free Denver Nuggets vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:”
If everything depended on Edwards this series would return to Denver but relying on KAT in pressure situations hasn’t always netted a positive result.
I’ve said all along that this series feels like the true battle for the championship and with three wins in a row the Nuggets are playing their best ball after a lackadaisical first round and first two games of this series.
In the last three games, the best defense in the NBA has seemingly been solved by Jokic and the Nuggets as they’ve averaged 55.2% from the field and 46.8% from the perimeter.
Comparatively, the Wolves have averaged 46.6% from the field and dipped to 33.4% from the perimeter (30.5% in the last two games). Chris Finch has to be concerned because Denver did this while Michael Porter Jr scored just 10 cumulative points in the last two games.
Frequent readers know I picked the Nuggets to defend their championship and while I think they will probably cement their berth to the Conference Finals on Thursday, I won’t be disappointed if we get a Game 7 because this series has been fire.

NBA Tweet Of The Day
Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards on Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic’s Game 5: “I just laugh. That’s all I can do. I can’t be mad. … He’s the MVP. He’s the best player in the NBA. He showed it the last three games. … He was special tonight. I have to give him his flowers. He was that guy.” pic.twitter.com/C0x3kylQS2
