The first-round series between the Nuggets and Timberwolves hits the road for the next two contests with Denver up 2-0 in the series following a 122-113 victory on Wednesday.
ATS
The Nuggets are 46-37-1 overall against the spread this season and they are 19-22 ATS as the away team. Additionally, the Timberwolves are 42-44 against the spread this season. Also, they are 20-22 ATS as the home team.
Season Series
This season the clubs played on four occasions splitting those matches with Minnesota winning the initial meeting 124-111 on January 2nd and February 5th (128-98) while the Nuggets won on January 18th (122-118) and February 7th (146-112).
Additionally, the Nuggets hold the all-time record having bested the Wolves in 87 of their 141 meetings. Last season the squads played three times with Denver sweeping the season series.
This is just the second playoff series between the club, with the last meeting in 2004 when the Wolves won 4-1.
Denver Nuggets
I’ve lost count of how many times during the season and leading into the playoffs analysts commented about Jamal Murray and whether the bubble postseason was an outlier.
Wednesday night the Canadian definitively answered that question with 40 points, three rebounds, five assists, and two steals while hitting six triples.
Nikola Jokic performed his typical maestro role and Michael Porter Jr. was key during periods that Murray and Jokic both sat. Denver took their foot off the gas in the third quarter but in truth even with Anthony Edwards exploding this game never felt in question.
Stats
On the positive side, Denver possesses one of the two best offenses in the league highlighted by scoring 115.8 points per game ranking 12th. Denver is shooting the best field goal percentage of 50.4% as well as the fourth-best perimeter efficiency of 37.9%.
Denver allows opponents to score 112.5 points per game which ranks eighth while limiting foes to 47.8% from the field and 34.4% from deep ranking 20th and third respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Collin Gillespie PG (OUT—leg fracture)
Minnesota Timberwolves
It took six quarters for the Wolves to finally make an impact in Denver with Anthony Edwards stepping up to lead the way to erase a 21-point deficit and briefly push Minnesota ahead.
Edwards scored 41 points hitting six of his 10 deep balls with each of the starters scoring in double-digits along with Kyle Anderson.
Ant Man showcased why he’s one of the rising stars in the league while Murray countered for Denver reminding of the Donovan Mitchell – Murray battle in the Bubble.
Karl-Anthony Towns collected a double-double of 10 points (3 of 12) and 12 rebounds but needs to be a much bigger presence for Minny.
Stats
Minnesota opponents score 115.8 points per game ranking 18th while the Wolves limit them to 47.1% from the field and 36.9% from deep ranking 11th and 24th respectively.
On offense, the Wolves score 115.8 points per game ranking 13th while shooting 49% from the field and 36.5% from the perimeter ranking third and 13th respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Jaden McDaniels SF (OUT indefinitely —hand)
- Naz Reid, C (OUT indefinitely —wrist, scaphoid fracture)

Free Denver Nuggets vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
Although the Wolves finally broke open their offense the reality is it was a combo of Edwards’ talent coupled with the Nuggets relaxing and not defending.
Much like the Celtics have handled the Hawks, the Nuggets are the far better two-way team in the series and when they’re focused the Wolves have struggled to be competitive.
Minny is missing two key defenders without Reid and McDaniels available but the Nuggets reserves who struggled to maintain leads when Jokic sat during the season have seemingly found their mojo at just the right time.
Michael Malone noted how Minny fans wanted to play the Nuggets and hopes what happened in the third quarter was enough of a warning so they come out fired up and focused.
Meanwhile, Towns has yet to show up in the series in an impactful way but should get a better whistle and be more comfortable at home. That said, I’m still taking the Nuggets.
