On Wednesday, November 23rd, the Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics meet for the first of their two scheduled meetings. Dallas will host on January 5th.
Dallas last played on Sunday losing 97-98 to the severely shorthanded Nuggets while the Celtics played Monday losing 107-121 to the Bulls.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Mavericks sweeping the regular-season series and currently owning a four-game win streak versus Boston. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Mavericks in 42 of their 82 matches.
Dallas Mavericks
I warned that the Nuggets could utilize the absence of the top two players to shore up the defense and sure enough, the Mavericks took the trap bait and fell to them on Sunday.
It didn’t come without controversy, however. First, the referees rescinded the 3-point Luka Doncic shot because his foot was on the line so the teams replayed the last three seconds and Denver’s Vlatko Cancar hit a mid-court shot.
Notably, earlier in the week the Heat’s Caleb Martin hit a 3-pointer AFTER the shot clock expired in Toronto but officials were adamant he shot before (video evidence proves the ball was still in his hands) and refused to review it.
Toronto went on to win the game but again, it points out how one game can be called vastly differently from another.
The second factor was the game-winning 3-point shot by Michael Porter Jr. was taken right in front of the Mavs bench who were adamant it was a 2-pointer.
The refs refused to look at it, and the 2-minute report claims MPJ had both feet established behind the line (they obviously had different angles because the ones I saw weren’t definitive).
Dallas ranks 25th in scoring 109.1 points per game, 22nd in field goal percentage (46.0%), and 20th for perimeter percentage (34.3%).
Defensively they limit opponents to the fewest points per game (105.3) but rank in the middle of the pack for efficiency with foes shooting 47.1% (21st) from the field and 35.8% from the perimeter (five-way tie in 14th).
Spencer Dinwiddie dislocated his shoulder late in the match versus Denver stating post-game they popped it back in and it’s not a big deal (Mavs list no injuries).
Boston Celtics
In prior posts, I noted the Celtics would need to rediscover their defensive prowess to enhance their chances of returning to the NBA Finals. Well, they sure got to work on that as they vaulted eight spots in just a week (from 22nd to 14th).
And they are doing this without Robert Williams and were without DPoY Marcus Smart for two games plus solid defender Malcolm Brogdon for four games during this section while they improved.
As poorly as the Bulls have played this season, I warned they could be the Celts’ streak-enders based on how well DeMar DeRozan has historically performed against them.
Turns out those historical trends are on point as the Bulls took the early lead at 5-3 and never let it go ending the Celtics’ nine-game win streak with DeRozan leading the way (28 points).
Boston boasts the second-best offensive production scoring 120.2 points per game while they rank third in both field goal percentage (48.7%) and perimeter percentage (39.1%).
They allow 113.3 opponent points (15th) and are tied for 13th both in field goal (46.1%) and perimeter (35.1%) percentage.
Robert Williams III (knee) and Danilo Gallinari (knee) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Mavericks are 1-9 ATS in their last 10 games.
- The Celtics are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The Mavericks are 4-1 SU in their last 5 games against Boston.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Boston’s last 5 games.
- Dallas is 1-7 SU in their last 8 games on the road.
Free Dallas Mavericks vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
Of their initial 16 games, the Mavericks played just five road games (1-4) but begin a 17-game segment featuring 11 road games. Conversely, the Celtics have played more games on the road (10) than at home (7) but begin a six-game home stand.
This contest offers two MVP candidates (Tatum – Doncic) and features the robust Celtics’ offense versus the Mavericks’ defensive prowess.
Dallas hasn’t performed well on the road while Boston has a better balance of offense/defense so while I’m leaning toward the Celtics netting the win the initial 7.0 spread feels a bit rich.
UPDATE: the spread dropped to 4.5 which is much more reasonable to bet Boston to cover. In addition, the over/under which wasn’t available at the first posting is listed as 218 (I like the over).
